Birds and Wildflowers
Wildflowers, whether in the wild or in your backyard, are important to wildlife. They provide nectar for hummingbirds and butterflies in the spring and summer. Then in the autumn as the wildflowers die or go dormant, the seed heads provide food for the birds. Although many of us may admire expanses of wildflowers that we view in magazines or as we drive by them on the side of the road, we hesitate to include them in our yards. In some cases, they may appear "weedy." Or they may not be carried by the local nursery in little pots all ready to plant. BUT, we birders, need these plants, difficult as they may be; wildflowers are valuable to birds. Why? One reason is that native plants and wildflowers of our locale, are familiar to the birds of the region. They do not need to "learn" whether there are tasty seeds to devour. Nor do they need to learn whether the plant is an abundant nectar source. Remember many of the hybrids developed by horticulturists are not as nectar-laden as native plants.

Native Wildflowers of the North Dakota Grasslands
Common Pincushion Cactus ( Coryphantha missouriensis For the past 15 years, Northern Prairie biologist Harold A. Kantrud has written a series of articles about native wildflowers of the North Dakota grasslands. The articles appear weekly in local newspapers and are published during the week each species is expected to bloom. The articles appeal to a wide audience of professionals and nature enthusiasts. Each article is three to four paragraphs in length and usually consists of the life history of the species, its identifying traits, where in North Dakota one can expect to find it, and its nomenclatural history. When available, a picture of each species is included. We thank Kurt A. Adolfson , White Bear Lake, Minnesota, and Jack Lefor , Dickinson, North Dakota, for use of their many excellent photographs on this site. This resource should be cited as: Kantrud, Harold A. 1995. Wild Flowers and Waterfalls Leonard J. Buck Garden - NJ
During June there are quite a few native plants in bloom. Mitchella repens , partridge berry, is native to the woodlands of eastern North America and blooms in two different locations here, the Fern Garden and Fern Rock. Mitchella repens is a trailing groundcover that has something for all seasons. It has 1/2" round, dark evergreen foliage with whitish veins in spring, two tiny, fragrant, tubular shaped, pinkish flowers in summer, and bright red berries in the fall, which can go throughout the winter. The scarlet berries are relished by partridges giving this plant its common name. Plant Mitchella repens in leafy, woodsy soil, in part shade to shade. Amsonia hubrechtii , blue star, can be found at the Visitor's Center and in the Azalea Field. This tough native has no serious pests or diseases and grows in average, medium wet to well-drained soil, in full sun or part shade. Numerous star-shaped, steel blue flowers appear in June and the soft-textured, needle-like foliage turns bright gold in fall. Amsonia hubrechtii grows 3-4' with an equal spread.

http://www.wildlifetrust.org.uk/facts/flowers.htm
Where have all the flowers gone?
More and more people are growing up without ever having the chance to see the wildflowers which older generations once took for granted. In fact, most of the British wild plants that have become locally extinct have done so in the last 40 years, well within living memory. There are many reasons - changes in the way we farm, the disappearance of 'waste' ground, woodland, hedgerows and roadside verges, even changes in the way we garden. Threats to wildflowers One of the major threats to wildflowers is the change in the way we farm. The demand for low cost food means that farmers are under pressure to farm as cost-effectively as possible. This means intensive use of the land, with bigger fields, fewer hedges, less 'wild' places, and more effective control of weeds - which in fact are of often wildflowers. In the past, an important part of the yearly farming cycle was the use of hay meadows. Fields of grasses and other plants were left to grow throughout the summer, and then cut and dried late in the season as winter food for livestock. Today, the use of artificial feedstuffs has meant less use of hay and fewer meadows .We lose up to 10% of our hay meadows every year. Nowadays, even the gardens of our homes are used differently. Cottage gardens were once crammed with plants chosen not just for decoration, but for their ability to provide medicines, food, dyes or nectar for honey.

http://www.life.ca/nl/37/wildflowers.html
Subscribe Advertise from Natural Life Magazine July/August 1994 Issue Index Contact Garden Naturally... with Wildflowers Growing wildflowers can be the most exciting kind of gardening imaginable. Whether you plant wildflowers in huge swaths along roadsides or in tiny pocket gardens in your own backyard, the vibrant colors and rich mixtures of these hardy plants are sure to please. Like any kind of gardening, wildflowers require work and planning, but following these few basic rules will assure your success. Determine your goals Before you buy seed, first know what you want from your wildflowers plantings. What is your purpose? Do you want three-season color? Textured plants for a winterscape? Only species native to your area? Are you planting to attract birds and butterflies? There are innumerable reasons to plant wildflowers, and it's important to define your goals before you begin. Choosing a site Although it may be tempting to plant wildflowers in a difficult site where nothing else grows, first stop to consider why this is the case. Wildflowers are hardy, but they're not magical. Most wildflowers need full sun and moderately fertile soils that drain well but not too quickly. While it is possible to plant wildflowers in poor soil on a steep slope in the shade, this presents a special challenge. Consulting with an expert will increase the chance of success when dealing with difficult terrain. Choosing seeds Your wildflowers will be only as good as the seeds you sow. If you invest the time and energy to plant wildflowers correctly, don't ruin the project by using questionable seeds. Buy from a reputable dealer who can supply you with information about individual species and different kinds of mixtures. Most mixtures include a combination of annuals and perennials. In general, mixtures for warm climates may include more annuals because they tend to re-seed year after year. Cold-climate mixtures should contain fewer annuals because they will not readily re-seed. Annuals should be included in almost every mixture, however, since they act as a nurse crop for the slower growing perennials which do not bloom until the second or third year.

Plant Identification Key. Buy the CD. Articles. Montana wildflowers Montana Wildflower Pictures Montana Weed Pictures Edible Plant pictures
http://montana.plant-life.org/
Welcome to Montana Plant Life!
This web site presents a wide variety of Montana wildflowers and other plants growing in the wilds of Montana. The flora of Montana is very varied and contains many species which range extends from the Pacific Northwest region as well as from the Great Plains. The site includes edible plants, medicinal plants as well as poisonous plants with sub-categories for edible roots, poisonous berries etc. Choices can also be made for displaying introduced vs. native plants and weeds. On the left menu there are indexes for english and scientific names, plus all presented species ordered after families. There are also lists for flowering month and plant types, for a total of 31 different indexes. Each presented species has its own page with pictures, a full description and, if applicable, information about edibility, medicinal and poisonous properties. The plant search engine from the title bar above can be used to search the entire plant identification database for any words or phrases, for example "lily", "arthritis", "Lewisia", "cancer" etc. If a name is not found in the indexes, it can often be found from a search instead. Each presented plant family has its own page with a description of its unique characteristics plus a plant identification online guide with pictures, short descriptions and links to the species that belong to it. The menu on the title bar above is the main navigation of the site. On the plant identification page, flower color, number of petals, leaf type etc. can be selected to find an unknown plant. This unique online plant identification system uses easy choices and images instead of a traditional plant identification key to arrive at the correct species. The site is created with the intent that anybody, without much prior knowledge about botany, should be able to identify and find information about Montana wildflowers and plants in general from the Montana flora. Therefore the guides on each family and genus page have also been set up to use easily recognizable features about the plants and, in addition, the images can be used to find the correct species.
