Native Plants and Seeds for Ecological Gardening - "Helping People Help Nature Since 1972"
Prairie Nursery's 2005 Catalog The act of ecological restoration with native plants provides us each with a spiritual connection to the earth. It brings us closer to nature as we invite all forms of life into our world. It is simply amazing to see the various butterflies, moths, birds, and other beautiful creatures that visit the native plants upon which they depend for sustenance and survival. We are pleased to offer a number of new plants this year, including many species for shady woodlands and savannas. Be sure to check out our new Low Growing Garden and Rain Garden , as well as our “tried and true” seed mixes. As always, we love hearing from you. Please let us know how we are doing, and thank you for your continued support and business! Sincerely

KANSAS WILDFLOWERS AND GRASSES
This site contains information and more than 1700 identification photos for some 430 species of forbs, grasses, sedges, rushes, and woody plants that are found growing in Kansas. All photographs were taken by Mike Haddock unless otherwise noted. They may be used for educational purposes but may not be downloaded for commercial use, i.e. to derive profit for yourself or your employer. This web site has been in existence since 1997. Plants that have been added since February 2005 are marked as: NEW For optimum display of the images, I would suggest disabling any "Automatic Image Resizing" options. I am the author of a book titled Wildflowers and Grasses of Kansas: A Field Guide that was published by the University Press of Kansas in April 2005. 83. Wildflowers, The Case For Native Plants
It is misleading to call nonnaturalized plants wildflowers , much less to sell them as such. It is particularly distressing for the home gardener when
http://www.prairienursery.com/NeilsPage/AchWriting/WildflowersCaseforNative.htm
Wildflowers The Case For Native Plants by Neil Diboll Prairie Nursery The recent surge of interest in low-maintenance meadows has spawned a plethora of wildflower seed mixes that are now available to the consumer. Most consist of a combination of annuals, biennials, and perennials, but some contain only annuals, and a few are composed purely of perennials. Which wildflower seed mix will best suit your needs?
First and foremost, the gardener should be familiar with the various species that are included in a given wildflower mix. Learn about plant heights, colors, adaptability to region, soil type, and sun conditions. Most commercially available "general purpose" meadow mixes contain a variety of flowers that do best in full sun and tolerate a wide range of soil conditions. Many mixes include a few species that are specifically adapted to dry, regular, or moist soils, so that some seed will almost certainly grow no matter where the mix is planted.
Some vendors sell the same mix nationwide, while many companies offer variations for different parts of the country. Most of these commercial wildflower concoctions are surprisingly similar in content. They usually contain plants from all over the world that tend to exhibit "weedy" behavior: that is, they grow rapidly on an open seedbed. Most are annuals and biennials. This assures quick results, so that the customer is immediately gratified. However, a common problem with these types of wildflower mixes is that by the third or fourth year the annuals and biennials have played out, and been overtaken by undesirable grasses and weeds.

BOTANICAL SITE: FLOYD COUNTY, NORTHWEST GEORGIA, UNITED STATES
PLANTS : In the late nineteenth century, discovery of new plant species in Floyd County were made by Alvan W. Chapman, in addition to the discovery of a new species of Hawthorn by Chauncey D. Beadle and Charles S. Sargent, These findings made Rome and the surrounding area well-known botanical sites in the scientific world.
Presently, the Nature Conservancy protects three botanical sites in the Coosa River Valley: the Black's Bluff Preserve, the Marshall Forest Preserve, and the Coosa Valley Prairies. There exist growing sites of these endangered species: Marshallia mohrii , Coosa Barbara Buttons., Helianthus verticillatus Small , Whorled Sunflower, Scutellaria montana Chapman , Large-Flowered Skullcap, and Viburnum bracteatum Rehder , Limerock Arrow-wood.
The Lock and Dam Park at the Coosa River is home of another rare species Neviusia alabamensis Gray, Alabama Snow-Wreath, and Crataegus triflora Chapm., Three-Flower Hawthorn.
The valleys of the Oostanaula and the Etowah rivers in Floyd County also contain botanical sites of rare plants. The rare Minute Hawthorn, Crataegus tristis Beadle, grows in the Etowah River Valley, and in the Oostanaula River Valley

T he wildflower business may bloom as never before in coming years. Federal legislation adopted in September 1987 requires that 25 cents of every $100 in Federal highway landscaping funds be used to plant wildflowers. With few exceptions wildflowers are now part of any landscaping project on the Federal-aid highway system. Most States already have some sort of native plant growth program involving highways, following the lead of Texas, which began its highway beautification with wildflowers in 1927. A resurgence of interest in the landscaping of the last century, with its emphasis on native plants, also noted by Dr. E. "Pat" Carpenter, professor of plant science at the University of Connecticut. House owners who want to get the most yard beauty from the least work, he says, are turning to "naturalistic landscaping." Reduced maintenance costs also are part of the benefits from wildflowers along roads. Many native plants are highly resistant to drought. Texas reported saving millions of dollars by substituting flowers for roadside weeds.

Swallowtail,
blazing star
The evening sun in autumn casts an orange glow on nature throughout Florida's big bend area. As cooler air begins to come to the red hills of Florida, butterflies may be seen in abundance. Swallowtails, both black and yellow, feast on the blazing star which proliferates along the highways near the coastal areas. We saw sulphur butterflies, skippers, orange butterflies which we took for gulf fritillaries, and several kinds of bees and moths. Rather than compete, these creatures landed on the same stalks and side by side extracted the nectar. Hungry bees would land across from huge butterflies. A hummingbird moth zoomed into view and was gone. We took many pictures, but couldn't get these creatures to stay still. We noticed that some were missing tail sections from close scrapes with birds, perhaps, and so no wonder they were wary of us. Hope you like our website which is 10 years old, changing with the seasons and events. Please write.

Common Questions about
Wildflowers and Native Plants
Mary H. Meyer Extension Horticulturist, University of Minnesota
Peter Olin Director, Minnesota Landscape Arboretum
What is the difference between a native plant, wildflower, and an "exotic" (non-native) or introduced plant? A native plant is usually defined as one that was growing naturally in a specific area before white or European settlement. A wildflower, also called a forb, is a native plant that grows without human care. Non-native plants are sometimes called "exotics", whether they were introduced hundreds of years ago by settlers and travelers, or recently purchased from a mail order nursery catalog. People, however, aren’t the only agents in plant relocation; they are spread through the actions of birds, animals, wind, and water. Are native plants easier to grow? It depends on the plant, and the garden site. Many natives, like brown-eyed susan ( Rudbeckia hirta ) and purple coneflower ( Echinacea purpurea ), are easy to grow in a wide range of conditions and are found in many states. Others are specific to a certain area and add a unique regional flavor to the landscape.

Habitat:
Flowering plants that grow on the edges of open water, near the edges of lakes or rivers, require moist living conditions. The roots of water plants grow in the organic-rich mud that accumulated in the flood plane of a river or adjacent to a lake. Sometimes, these plants grow in moist beaver meadows - areas that were once under water held behind a beaver dam.

Background Wildflowers (native to Australia) and Proteas constitute a substantial small agricultural industry with recent estimates putting the value of production at about $65 million pa. Several hundred small growers and a few larger growers are involved. Some even larger scale producers are probably required if Australia is to compete with the major producers of Australian wildflowers in other countries. We have the germplasm and now we need the entrepreneurial strength to grow the industry.

Interest in prairie wildflowers has increased in recent years due to increasing public interest in environmental isssues and ecology. Before 1870, the prairie region once occupied over one-third of the land area of the United States. At present, only one-half of one percent of those areas remain. Recent legislation has mandated a minimum use of wildflowers by state highway departments on new landscape plantings. Many deep-rooted prairie grasses and showy flowers (called forbs) may meet the criteria of aesthetics, erosion control, and cost effectiveness needed for establishment on tough sites.
