With over 800 members in Kentucky and neighboring states, the Kentucky Native Plant Society is a leader in promoting education about, appreciation for, and conservation of our native plants.
The society's goals are:
To serve as the Kentucky native plant education resource; To support native plant research; To support efforts to identify and protect endangered, threatened, and rare native plant species; To promote appreciation of the biodiversity of native plant ecosystems; To encourage the appropriate use of native plants.

Learn about North American wild edibles, butterfly gardening, wildlife, carnivorous plants, wetland values, and uses for native plants. We'll show you plant and animal artifacts, from magnified butterfly wings to fern fossils. Our carnivorous plant collection includes 7 kinds of pitcher plants, 5 types of sundews, Venus flytraps, bladderworts and more. In the Plants That Do Tricks department, our sensitive plants respond to touch just as dramatically as the Venus flytraps. In the warmer seasons, we can explore several ecosystems here and hunt for butterfly eggs, caterpillars, chrysalises and adults as you learn about the native plants that attract and feed our local butterflies, hummingbirds, and other animals of interest. You'll be surprised to learn that even some of the trees and grasses in your yard are butterfly baby food. Your biologist guide will identify birds, frogs, lizards, etc. and their calls, animal signs, and other curiosities along the way.

Michael Pollan's "Second Nature" deals, in part,
with the impossibility of spelling out the "natural"
part of the ecco-system. He makes the point that
nature is ever changing and that these changes are an intergal part of the natural process. He sees the gardener who mimics the ways of nature as a resource who can contribute to the cleaning of the damaged eco-system. Michael Pollan wants the gardener to learn "to think like a carrot". I found it to be a delightfull read and he talks about important stuff in a very light and charming way. This book is listed in Appendix B of the FAQ at: http://sunsite.unc.edu/rge Bottom line, he will say something like, "garden in an environmentally friendly way and, in turn, nature will establish an appropriate and viable eco-system."

Garden Layout - Plants - Wildflowers There isn't really the space in my garden for a bed or a patch devoted to native wildflowers, but, as these are something of a passion for Mrs Taz, I usually grow a mixture of them in a trough or a planter. Rather than planting a patch of, say, cornflowers, I mix the seeds and scatter them, so that it's a complete surprise as to what flowers where. Some of the seed is from proprietary mixtures, so half the time, I don't even know what it is I've planted, but that merely adds to the surprise. The mixture currently includes the following species....
  • Aquilegia vulgaris
  • Calendula
  • Cornflowers
  • Lathyrus sylvestris (Wood Pea)
  • Nigella (Love-in-a-mist)
  • Night-scented Stock
  • Poppies
  • Viola riviniana

52. Sarracenia, Pitcher Plant, Carnivorous Plants, Native Plants, Wildflowers
Sarracenia or pitcher plants, are carnivorous plants and native plants to the USA, where they are some of the loveliest wildflowers.
http://www.pitcherplant.com/sarracen.html
Sarracenia - North American Pitcher Plants Sarracenia are usually the focus of a hardy carnivorous planting. They are a natural for water's edge or in a bog garden. We recommend mulching where temperatures drop below zero (zone 6-7). North of zone 6 plants must be given protection to prevent sudden, prolonged, deep freezing. Sarracenia need at least six hours of direct sun during spring and summer for best growth. Thorough care and planting information is included with each order. Botanique ships only well established Sarracenia plants that are mature or nearly mature. Our large plants would be too heavy to ship in pots. A typical med.large plant is coming from a 1/2 to 1 gallon container! That size plant is impractical to ship in a pot, so we carefully bare-root the plants and pack them to arrive in excellent shape. When you've got over 60,000 big Sarracenia, you don't need to ship wimpy plants! 100% nursery propagated; we do not sell field-collected plants. Satisfaction GUARANTEED! THE BOG GARDEN SPECIAL This is our most popular item and best value.
