Vascular Plants I. Introduction
These are plants with tissues specialized for conduction and support. This means that they have true roots, stems and leaves. II. Organization of Vascular Plant Structure
    A. Organs and Systems
      1. Roots - the root system serves primarily for anchorage and absorption.
      2. Stems and leaves - shoot system. Stems support the photosynthetic leaves, and conduct raw materials toward and products from them.
    B. Tissues and Growth
      1. Primary tissues are laid down by primary growth. This is growth from the apical meristems . Meristems are the highly mitotic regions near the apices of roots and stems. Simple vascular plants have only primary tissues, as do many advanced species. The three primary tissues are:
        a. Protoderm - gives rise to epidermis
        b. Procambium - vascular tissue - xylem and phloem - stele.
        c. Ground meristem - parenchyma and pith - cortex.
      2. Secondary tissues are laid down by secondary growth. This is done by vascular cambium - lateral meristem. Vascular cambium lays down secondary xylem and secondary phloem Cork cambium may also be active and produce periderm . This may replace the epidermis as the outer layer of the plant.

Intro
Ferns Vines Trees and Shrubs ... Herbs The following checklist represents a revision of Local Flora - Vascular Plants of North Central Florida by Dana G. Griffin, III (1978). This checklist was derived from existing lists and expanded through observations made during several University of Florida field courses and a study of records at the University of Florida Herbarium. The names of several species listed in the 1978 publication have been deleted, while those of many previously unlisted species have been added. The primary focus of this revision is the standardization of common names. I do not claim that this checklist is complete, nor do I expect it to be free from error. My intent was to list the more common or biologically interesting species found in north central Florida as a guide for those studying the plant life of the region. I am grateful to the staff of the University of Florida Herbarium for the use of their facilities during the preparation of this checklist. I also greatly appreciate the assistance I have received from many individuals, particularly, Dr. D. G. Griffin and Dr. D. B. Ward. I wish to thank Kent D. Perkins, Collection Manager at the UF Herbarium for his editorial suggestions. Comments regarding editorial matters should be addressed to him.

Systematic Botany and Mycology Laboratory Online Resources - Vascular Plants Germplasm Resources Information Network (GRIN) Taxonomy The USDA, ARS, Germplasm Resources Information Network (GRIN) is the centralized database for more than 450,000 germplasm accessions still active in the NPGS. A broad range of data is stored for each accession: passport, taxonomic, descriptor, observation, evaluation, and inventory data. GRIN taxonomic data is the overall framework of and principal access to the database. Included in the taxonomic data are about 14,000 accepted and 4,600 synonymous generic names, covering all accepted vascular plant genera, 45,000 accepted and 28,000 synonymous specific and infraspecific names, 29,300 common names, 274,000 distribution records, and 254,000 taxonomic reference citations. Approximately 10,285 accepted specific and infraspecific names are attached to viable germplasm accessions. The remainder of the accepted specific and infraspecific names are included because they are economically important germplasm relatives, weeds, timbers, drug sources, erosion control plants, etc. The standard reference World Economic Plants is also available for searching.
