Vascular Plant Families and Genera
List Genera within a Family
The families are sorted alphabetically within Major Groups. Click on any family to see a list of the accepted genera and synonyms in it, also sorted alphabetically.
Explanation of Output Format
The data for each generic name occupies two lines. The first line shows the family to which the name is referred, and the name itself appears on the second line. If the generic name is for an accepted genus, it will appear in bold face followed by the author or authors in their "standard form" according to the Authors of Plant Names. If the name is a synonym, it will appear in italics followed similarly by the 'standard form' for the author or authors. It will be followed by an equals sign (=) and the accepted name to which it is referred. If the synonym is not available for use even under an alternative taxonomy, its nomenclatural status will be indicated in brackets according to the following abbreviations: SUH : Synonym, unavailable, illegitimate later homonym

The families are sorted alphabetically within Major Groups. Click on any family to download to your computer an ASCII file of the genera which it contains.
Explanation of Text File Format
The downloaded file is uncompressed - even the largest file is small enough not to require compression. The file is an ASCII text file, with one line per genus name, sorted alphabetically. Each field will be delimited by double quotation marks, and separated from the next by a comma. The fields are:
  • Unique identity number
  • Hybrid sign
  • Name
  • Author
  • If a synonym, the unique identity number of the preferred name Tip : Use the "Search" or "Find" feature of your browser to move directly to the family you are interested in, below.

    South Carolina Plant Atlas
The purpose of this Atlas is to show, on a county by county basis, the distribution of all native and naturalized ferns, fern allies, gymnosperms, and angiosperms of South Carolina. Information in the Atlas All distributional information is based on the presence of at least one verified herbarium specimen; non-vouchered records have not been used. The presence of a species in a county is indicated by a dot, and the dot is positioned at the centroid of that county; the maps in this Atlas suggest no other geographical distribution. Nomenclature in this Atlas generally follows that of John Kartesz' A Synonymized Checklist of the Vascular Flora of the United States, Canada, and Greenland (1994, 2nd edition, 2 vols., Timber Press: Portland). MAPS: Approximately 3000 vascular plant species are listed in the Atlas, with a county dot map for each. Species are listed alphabetically by scientific name. Click on a letter to begin: A B C D ... Z History and Development of the Atlas Plant distributions were provided in Radford, Ahles, and Bell's Manual of the Vascular Flora of the Carolinas (1968, UNC Press: Chapel Hill), and these have been maintained in the current Atlas. After the publication of the Manual, a surge of botanical work in the 1970s led to the accumulation of a significant number of new records for the state. The resulting need for an updated distributional checklist gave rise to this Atlas.

The New York Botanical Garden has completed cataloging its approximately 90,563 vascular plant type specimens. Basic information from all types in these families has been captured in the database, but some of the records are more complete than others. We have now completed photographing the vascular plant type specimens . Digital images of over 85,000 specimens are now available in this catalog. All families contain images except those marked with an asterisk ( ). Any specimen that does not have an image is probably out on loan and will be imaged when returned to NYBG. Images are best viewed in true color (24 bit) at a resolution of 1024 x 768 or higher. Please address any data requests, problems, comments and/or corrections to the Bioinformatics Managers

    Species in Parks
Flora and Fauna Databases General Information about the Databases The Information Center for the Environment , in conjunction with the National Park Service , developed preliminary databases of vascular plant and vertebrate animal species reported to occur within lands managed by the U.S. National Park Service. The databases are by no means complete listings of species residing in U.S. National Parks. The databases were originally compiled using custom input devices called NPFlora and NPFauna , which were developed in Microsoft FoxPro for DOS. These applications are no longer available. However, this site enables you to interactively query the NPFlora and NPFauna databases. Be aware that some parks have many species records, especially for plants, and that the results of queries of the species reported from these parks can take quite a while to download, especially for those with relatively slow Internet access. Much more comprehenive listings of plant and animal occurrences derived from the world's protected areas may be obtained from the ICE Biological Inventories of the World's Protected Areas databases. The ICE Biological Inventory databases are updated monthly.
