Are poinsettias or any other holiday plants poisonous?
By Martin Simenc, child safety expert [See Biography]
Question: Are poinsettias or any other holiday plants poisonous?
Answer: Contrary to a stubborn myth that refuses to die, poinsettias are not poisonous to humans. Consuming large amounts of any plant can cause cramping and diarrhea, but no one has ever died or become seriously ill from eating poinsettias. Your pets, however, may have a bad reaction if they munch on these plants, so you'd be wise to keep them out of Fido's range. The plant to really beware of this season is mistletoe. While standing beneath it may earn you the pleasure of a kiss or two, ingesting the stuff will cause severe stomach cramps and diarrhea and can even be fatal. var ad2=''; document.write(ad2);

42. Do You Have Poisonous Weeds In Your Pastures & Forages?  Jerry Doll
We have no “official list” of poisonous plants in Wisconsin and there is no need to plants poisonous to Livestock. 1991. Lisa Axton and Beverly Durgan.
http://ipcm.wisc.edu/uw_weeds/extension/articles/poisonpasture.htm
Jerry Doll
Introduction
Livestock managers seem to have an increasing awareness that poisonous plants can affect livestock. Part of this is due to the ever increasing population of horse owners in Wisconsin and to the growth in management intensive grazing systems. Poisonous plant questions are also more frequent in dry years as droughts create situations in which animals often graze plants they would otherwise not eat and producers may harvest fields or plants that are not usually harvested to have adequate feed stock for the winter. Additionally, weeds not usually considered toxic might become poisonous under certain condition. For example, weeds may become more palatable to livestock following an herbicide application in a pasture or fencerow. This may result in animals eating plants they would normally avoid consuming. Weeds that are known nitrate accumulators (such as pigweeds and common lambsquarters) are particularly high in nitrate soon after a rain and grazing or feeding forage with these weeds under this condition could seriously affect animal health. Fortunately we have relatively few cases of animal deaths as a consequence of consuming poisonous plants.

Plants Poisonous To Horses
The traditional agricultural practices both allowed and encouraged a greater variety of pasture species to exist compared to today. Before the 1940's, a paddock would probably have contained well over 100 different varieties of herbage, compared with todays adverage of prehaps 10 species in the modern pasture.
As a number of different species of plants declined in the countryside (mainly due to the use of nitrogenous fertilizers), the general knowledge about the plants affect on animals declined aswell. Many toxic plants disappeared along with the beneficial species, therefore it became less important to identify them as they became less of a threat to livestock.
The trend away from the extensive use of chemicals together with the employment of more traditional methods of farming means that species diversity may increase. Along with the nutural benefit this will bring, there is the risk that many of the potentially poisonous species of wild plants will return, together with those which, although not outright poisonous in themselves, may be toxic to some degree. It is therefore becoming more important to be able to identfy a wider range of potentually dangerous herbage in order to access the risk for your grazing livestock. We have searched the internet and various great books, to bring this page together, below you will find 119 potentially poisonous plants of varying degrees. You will find out information about each of these weeds and other useful information.

59. The Real Story On Plants Poisonous To Cats
plants poisonous to cats house plants provide us with beauty and enjoyment, but some can also cause major problems for your feline friend.
http://www.kitten-cat-magazine.com/plants-poisonous-to-cats.html
The truth about
plants poisonous to cats
House plants provide us with beauty and enjoyment, but some plants poisonous to cats can also cause major problems for your feline friend. According to Dr. William Buck, director of the National Animal Poison Control Center (NAPCC) at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine in Urbana, "a lot of ornamental plants have irritating sap that will cause an animal to salivate or maybe vomit and have diarrhea." He says that plants like the hibiscus and those in the Easter lily family, which are not toxic to people, may be very harmful to pets. Two or three days after cats have eaten a few leaves of a Tiger lily or Easter lily, they will go into renal failure. After ingesting hibiscus, a dog will vomit persistently, may vomit blood and have bloody diarrhea. "The loss of body fluid may be severe enough to be lethal in some cases," Dr. Buck cautions. Holly berries are another type of plants poisonous to cats and other pets. Just a few berries ingested by a cat will cause it to vomit, have diarrhea, and become generally depressed. Mistletoe also causes digestive system upset as well as irregular heartbeats and possibly cardiac shock. Azalea plants are very toxic to sheep and goats, but are not common problems in cats or dogs. Plants in the nightshade family, such as European bittersweet and black nightshade, are more erratic in their toxicity. In some individual animals it may cause digestive problems, confusion, weakness, sleepiness, depression, and decreased heart rate, but plants of the nightshade family don't affect all animals alike. Common houseplants, like philodendron and dieffenbachia (dumb cane) contain oxalate crystals that cause the animal's mucous membranes to swell, making the animal unable to eat.
