List of poisonous plants that could be dangerous to llamas.

which may be dangerous
to llamas or other livestock
Note: This page has been updated with photos of all of the plants.
Introduction
Imagine taking a couple of your favourite llamas to visit a local hospital at Christmas. There are Rhododendron, Laurel, and Christmas Rose shrubs near the walkways. The building is covered in Ivy. Inside there are potted plants, Christmas Cherries and Poinsettias. The halls are decorated with Holly and Mistletoe. The llamas are impressed, it looks like a salad bar, but all the plants mentioned above are poisonous.
This list of plants covers some of the poisonous plants found in British Columbia and the surrounding areas. It is not intended as a definitive text on poisonous plants, but hopefully it will make llama owners aware of some of the things to watch out for. As an example, while gathering information for this, we discovered Deadly Nightshade in two areas on our farm, one patch growing through the fence into the llama pasture.
All of the plants listed may not be poisonous to llamas, but there are reports of them all being toxic in varying degrees. Some only need the consumption of a couple of leaves or berries to be fatal where others may only cause a bit of stomach upset. Most of the books that the information has been gleaned from refer to the poisonous effects on humans, rather than the effects on livestock.

Field Guide to Plants Poisonous to Livestock -
Western U.S.
by Shirley A. Weathers
Foreword by Peter R. Cheeke, Professor of Comparative Animal Nutrition and Toxicology, Oregon State University The first field guide to poisonous plants in the western U.S., designed by and for livestock owners to help protect against plant poisoning, will be released on April 1, 1998. Horses, cattle, sheep, llamas, goats, alpacas and swine are addressed.
Why This Book?
Every year, poisonous plants cause death, temporary and chronic pain and illness, abortions, decreased productivity and birth defects involving hundreds of thousands of livestock. Economic losses amount to hundreds of millions of dollars. Experts agree that many occasions of plant poisoning are preventable. Good use of good information about toxic plants coupled with ensuring access to safe feed provide the best insurance against plant poisoning. Field Guide to Plants Poisonous to Livestock - Western U.S. compiles in over 240 pages key information from various resources to help livestock owners identify over 100 western toxic plants, consider animal, pasture and range management strategies, spot symptoms of potential poisoning and respond effectively when poisoning occurs.
Learn Quickly What You Need to Know
Over 100 plants, shrubs and trees are organized by leaf shape/arrangement to facilitate identification throughout the growing season.

27. British Poisonous Plants & Shrubs
There are a large number of poisonous plants and shrubs to be found throughout A GUIDE TO plants poisonous TO HORSES By Keith Allison Chris Day
http://www.horseweb-uk.com/features/plantmain.htm
There are a large number of poisonous plants and shrubs to be found throughout Britain, although their abundance will vary greatly from place to place. Horses and ponies at pasture are often at risk, especially when grass is in short supply. Here is a guide to some of the more common plants, how to identify them and their effects on the horse.
They are listed alphabetically, so click below if you are looking for a specific plant or shrub to see if we have it listed. A B C D ... Z
  • Autumn Crocus or Meadow Saffron (Colchicum autumnale)
  • Found in damp meadows and woodlands. The usual cause of poisoning in the spring comes from eating the leaves and seed vessels and in the late summer and autumn it is the flowers.
  • Alder Buckthorn
  • Bracken or (Pteridium aquilinum) is one of the more common plants especially on some hilly or moorlands ground.
This is poisonous while green and remains so if cut in the green state, dried and stacked. The roots or (rhizomes) are said to be five times more poisonous than the fronds and this should be remembered if ploughing or digging land on which bracken is growing.
The toxin in brackenfern is thiaminase, an enzyme that destroys thiamine (vitamin B1). The horse then essentially suffers from a vitamin deficiency of thiamine, which causes myelin degeneration of peripheral nerves ( a loss of the fatty insulation layer to nerves that primarily control muscles). Poisoning can occur at any time of year, but is more likely in the late summer between August and October when other forages are scarce and the level of thiaminase is at its peak. Bracken is not considered palatable, but horses will eat it if no other forage is available, or they will consume it in hay or bedding, where it remains toxic. Some horses are believed to acquire a taste for it, and these horses will consume it even if other forages are available.

    Plants Poisonous to Cats
One of my favorite parts of the holidays is displaying forests of poinsettias on my fireplace, but since I've learned these colorful plants are hazardous to cats, I hang them from our balcony instead.
Cats love to chew plants, so if you have any on this list, it's best to display them in a way that keeps them (and your cats) out of harm's way.

To avoid this situation I would suggest taking time to ask your client about their plans for the
property. This may create an opportunity for you to recommend plant material or at least better locations for certain types of plants that may be harmful to the horses. With established plantings, you can point out dangerous situations where horses are concerned and offer alternatives to the owner.
them becomes heavily compacted from the congregating horses providing little shade in the end.
Trees like Red Maple, Oak, Golden Chain, Black Locust and wild Cherries are potentially very toxic to horses and should be removed if in the pasture or around the fence line. A few resources Bryan has found useful regarding poisonous plants and horses are:

Plants Poisonous to People in Florida and Other Warm Areas 3rd. edition by Julia Morton This classic work by the famed Florida naturalist Julia Morton was prompted by the occurrence of the large number of poisonous plant species used to landscape Florida yards. The book jacket states, "In the December 1965 issue of the Florida Medical Journal, Dr. Ray Edwards of Jacksonville summarized 430 cases of plant poisoning that had been reported through the Florida poison control centers in the previous four-year period. Of these, 58% occurred in the home yard and 22% in the neighbor's yard." Dr. Sorrell L. Wolfson wrote, "Julia Morton's book on poisonous plants with the excellent photographs and commentary, will be a valuable source of information for everyone...all the Poison Control Centers in the State of Florida should have a copy of this excellent book." Many popular ornamental plants, the majority of them non-native to Florida, have toxic parts which produce a variety of reactions in humans, from contact dermatitis to death from ingestion. The full-color photographs in Julia Morton's book provide an easy way to recognize the culprits as well as valuable scientific information about their components and effects.
