Low Allergen Gardens
Last updated June 2002
Gardening
Gardening can be an enjoyable hobby or occupation for anybody but people with asthma and hayfever need to be aware that gardens can also be a source of allergens and triggers. Pollens, mould, spores, dust and strong scents can all cause problems for some people. For those who love gardening, it can be extremely frustrating to have your symptoms triggered by some or all of the above. It is impossible to remove such triggers from your garden completely. However, there is a lot that you can do to make sure you come into contact with as few of them as possible. Asthma UK developed the Low Allergen Garden concept to demonstrate how this could be achieved.
Asthma UK's Low Allergen Gardens
Asthma UK, as the National Asthma Campaign, exhibited the first Low Allergen Garden at the 1993 Chelsea Flower Show. The garden was designed by Lucy Huntington, with the help and advice of leading allergy experts and doctors. Two further Low Allergen Gardens have been exhibited at the Chelsea Flower Show both of which were awarded the Silver Gilt Medal.

general hydroponics
Choose a general hydroponics system that is right for your needs. Understanding what your cultivating objectives are and how large an area you want to cultivate in will help you choose the hydroponics systems that is right for you. Worldwide herb, food and marijuana hydroponics have gained immensely in popularity mainly because it is a low maintenance, efficient way to cultivate and very easy for beginners to learn General hydroponics can supply the basic needs of plants but different plants require varying degrees of these basic needs, namely…
  • Sufficient light
  • Food or nutrients
  • Carbon dioxide (C02)
  • Water
  • Heat
  • Fresh air
Cultivating plants without soil using general hydroponics means that none of these basic plant needs can be lacking or the plants will suffer. Plants being grown with hydroponics do not require a large root system in order to feed and unlike soil-based plants, they do not have to divide their energy between growing upward for the plant and growing downward for the root system. The readily available nutrients provided by the

Diversity in size and structure.
Among the gymnosperms are plants with stems that may barely project above the ground and others that develop into the largest of trees. Cycads resemble palm trees, with fleshy stems and leathery, featherlike leaves. The tallest cycads reach 19 metres (62 feet). Zamia pygmaea, a cycad native to Cuba, has a trunk less than 10 centimetres (four inches) in height. Of the gnetophytes, Ephedra (joint fir) is a shrub and some species of Gnetum are vines, while the unusual

A General Health Management Guide for Indoor Plants
HYG-3067-96

A great variety of plants are used indoors to enhance the beauty and soften the harshness of our working and living environments. There are many environments that we classify as "indoor." Indoor environments are not generally thought of as "natural" environments. Nevertheless, it is possible to maintain the health of plants in these environments for many months or years. Different kinds of plants require specific environmental and care needs to keep them healthy. Thus, an important aspect of managing the health of indoor plants is selecting the right plant for the indoor environment you have. Also, plants should be selected according to the care programs you are willing to undertake. Always buy conditioned or acclimated plants from reputable sources. Although the care of plants can sometimes be a matter of knowing the specific needs of the plant types selected, health management is also a matter of recognizing the general needs of plants and developing care programs that provide generally well-balanced environments. The plant will react to all of the elements of its environment simultaneously from day to day. When one element becomes imbalanced it may trigger a stress. Uncorrected stress will soon lead to poor plant health.

Allergy Alert
Gardening by the Yard : Episode GBY-613

If you're sneezing a lot in your yard, check to see if you have any of these allergy-causing culprits.
Fall means cooler temperatures, more abundant rainfall, fewer pests and gorgeous leaf colors; on the other hand, fall is a time when the air is filled with all sorts of things that cause allergies. Major culprits are pollen, mold spores and, if rainfall has been sparse, dust. Master gardener Paul James shares the reasons certain plants cause allergic reactions as well as some natural methods of allergy control:
  • Only male plants produce pollen, which means that only male plants can produce the symptoms associated with pollen allergies. It's not always easy to identify male and female plants, and in many cases there's no real way of knowing what sex your plant/tree is, since gender is rarely indicated on nursery tags. To further complicate the matter, you can't always tell the sex of a plant just by looking. Here are a few general guidelines to help you sort it out:
  • Within the world of gardening there are male plants, female plants and plants that are both male and female.

general description of this family of terrestrial, herbaceous, homosporous vascular plants, comprising a single genus with about 15 species. Includes photos of several Equisetum species.

Equisetaceae
Each "thumbnail" image below is linked to a larger photograph. Equisetum arvense , horsetail. This species normally has the strobilus borne on short, non-green, ephemeral shoots that appear early in the growing season. The green shoots develop later, by which time the fertile shoots usually have wilted. In this population, an aberrant green shoot with a developing strobilus was found long after the normal non-green fertile shoots had senesced. Equisetum hyemale , scouring rush. Whorls of leaves and the terminal strobilus are clearly visible. The amber colored umbrellalike sporangiophores are evident and a few pendulous pale yellowish sporangia are partially visible. Equisetum telmateia , giant horsetail, vic. Newport, OR, 2002. Equisetum x schaffneri (E. giganteum x E. myriophyllum) , horsetail or scouring rush. Note whorled branches. The stems are ribbed and are hollow except at the jointed nodes. Cells in the stem may be silicified or glasslike, contributing to the utility of the stems in scouring pots and pans, a quality that was exploited by pioneers in western North America. The leaves are simple, mostly entire, and alternate; stipules are lacking. The flowers are nearly always bisexual and actinomorphic. The calyx consists of 5 distinct or connate sepals. The corolla is 5-merous, sympetalous, and often has small appendages in the throat. The androecium consists of 5 distinct stamens adnate to the corolla tube or perigynous zone and alternate with the corolla lobes. The gynoecium consists of a single compound pistil of 2 carpels, a single, often gynobasic style, and a superior, often deeply 4-lobed ovary with 4 locules, each containing a single basal-axile ovule. An annular nectary disk is sometimes present. The fruit consists of 4 1-seeded nutlets or a 1-4-seeded nut or drupe. Each "thumbnail" image below is linked to a larger photograph.
