G87-837-A (Revised July 2001)
Guide to Selecting Houseplants
This NebGuide provides a list of houseplants to help you choose the ones best suited to your home. Anne M. Streich, Extension Horticulturist - Outreach Programs Previous Category Catalog Order Info
Success in growing flowering or foliage houseplants largely depends on your skill, knowledge of the plant material and the time you want to invest in it. In addition, site selection and cultural practices are also very important. Some houseplants are relatively easy to grow and are easily adaptable, like the cast iron plant. Other plants, like nerve plant, are difficult to grow because of their high moisture and humidity requirements. Cultural practices, including watering, fertilizing, and pest control are detailed in the NebGuide Guide to Growing Houseplants , G91-1022. This NebGuide is available at your local county extension office. The following list will help you select an appropriate houseplant for your home. First you must determine where you want to place the plant in your home and then note the environmental conditions (available light, humidity and temperature) of that location. These are general requirements and may need to be adjusted depending on the type of soil and pot that you use. As light intensity is reduced during the winter months, a decrease in temperature and moisture is also desirable for plant health. In addition, some plants require cooler temperatures during the winter to initiate flower buds. Water: M - keep uniformly moist, growing media kept moist to touch but not saturated with water

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS FOR NUCLEAR POWER PLANT EMERGENCIES. The State of Tennessee is home to two nuclear power plants operated by the Tennessee Valley
http://www.tnema.org/EP/EP_FNF.htm
Home Media Training Mitigation ... Planning EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS FOR NUCLEAR POWER PLANT EMERGENCIES The State of Tennessee is home to two nuclear power plants operated by the Tennessee Valley Authority: Sequoyah Nuclear Plant (Near Chattanooga) Watts Bar Nuclear Plant (Near Spring City) Additionally, there is the Brown's Ferry Nuclear Plant in northern Alabama that has the potential for affecting residents along the Tennessee-Alabama border. Although nuclear power production is considered one of the safest methods of producing energy available today, there is still considerable concern on the part of those who live within the potential effects zone of the plants about the hazards of radiation and the potential for a major catastrophe. TEMA, TVA and the local jurisdictions surrounding these plants spend an enormous amount of time preparing contingency plans to coordinate the response to any events that do occur. This is a requirements for the facilities to be licensed to operate by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). More detailed information about the planning process can be found here TEMA and TVA jointly produce pamphlets, leaflets and other educational and preparedness materials that are distributed to the population living within the emergency planning zones surrounding the plants. Additional information is provided in the telephone books distributed in the areas around these facilities.

general discussion of the kingdomlevel taxon Chromista, including diatoms, kelp, downy mildew, and other organisms that possess chlorophyll and are mostly photosynthetic, but are not plants. Includes links for more information.
http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/chromista/chromista.html
Introduction to the Chromista
From microbes to giants. . .
It may seem hard to believe that microscopic diatoms , with their delicate silica skeletons only forty millionths of a meter long, can be related to the giant kelps , which may grow as long as fifty meters, or that either one is related to the downy mildew that nearly destroyed the French wine industry. But they are related placed together in the great kingdom-level taxon Chromista. The name Chromista means "colored", and although some chromists, like mildews, are colorless, most are photosynthetic. Even though they are photosynthetic, chromists are not at all closely related to plants, or even to other algae. Unlike plants, the Chromista have chlorophyll c , and do not store their energy in the form of starch. Also, photosynthetic chromists often carry various pigments in addition to chlorophyll, which are not found in plants. It is these pigments which give them their characteristic brown or golden color. Photosynthetic chromists are some of the most important organisms in aquatic ecosystems. The cool and temperate coasts of continents are lined with kelp forests , where many commercially important fish and shellfish feed and reproduce, and diatoms are frequently the primary source of food for both marine and fresh-water organisms.
