Welcome to Cage Birds!
European Goldfinches courtesy of Daniel Maldonado What is a bird?
Birds are defined as homeothermic (warm-blooded) vertebrates with two pairs of limbs based on a pentadactyl pattern. The front limbs are modified to form wings. The body is covered by feathers except over the legs and feet, where reptilian type scales exist, and over the face which is often ornamental skin. What is a bird? Birds are my companions and my friends. I wake to their songs and their chattering each morning and many days they give me the strength and the reason to get out of bed and carry on with my day. They have taught me about love and bonding and have taught me how to play again. Birds, whether my own companion birds, or the hummingbirds I see outside my window, allow me to communicate with other peopleand make new friends in a way I could not do before.

Plant Germplasm
Collections Search GRIN Request Germplasm ... Links National Plant Germplasm System NPGS is a cooperative effort by public (State and Federal) and private organizations to preserve the genetic diversity of plants. The world's food supply is based on intensive agriculture, which relies on genetic uniformity. But this uniformity increases crop vulnerability to pests and stresses. Scientists must have access to genetic diversity to help bring forth new varieties that can resist pests, diseases, and environmental stresses. The NPGS aids the scientists and the need for genetic diversity by:
  • acquiring crop germplasm preserving crop germplasm evaluating crop germplasm documenting crop germplasm distributing crop germplasm
Since many important crop species originate outside the United States, the first steps toward diversity are acquisition and introduction. New germplasm (accessions) enter NPGS through
collection, donation by foreign cooperators or international germplasm collections. An identifying number such as the Plant Introduction number (PI number) is assigned to each accession. The accession is then evaluated, maintained, and made available for distribution.

Hellebore TYPE:
Winter-blooming, evergreen perennial BASIC NEEDS:
From shade to sun, depending on species; good drainage; even moisture WORST ENEMY:

"Hellebores are addictive, and once intrigued and ensnared by their charms it is hard to break the spell." I'll say. Coast to coast, American gardeners are gonzo for hellebores, and don't the nursery folk know it. The plant's a regular pinup girl gracing the covers of who knows how many plant catalogs this year her open-wide, color-saturated sepals whispering sweet nothings as her provocative private parts draw you in. Even Strangman's book reads like a Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue, page after page of glossy close-ups with each flower at its absolute peak. Midnight purples and high-noon yellows bear witness to the sorcery of hybridization: these beauties did not emerge whole from their shells.

Water Treatment Plants
An NPDES General Permit for Discharges from Filtration Plants
Water treatment plants are those facilities that treat water, ground water or surface water, and produce potable water for public consumption or provide primary treatment and produce "industrial water." A wastewater discharge permit is typically required when the treatment of the raw water results in a discharge of wastewater (e.g., backwash) to surface water. The Department of Ecology has issued an NPDES general permit for water treatment plants and eligible facilities are required to apply for coverage. The Washington State Department of Ecology (Ecology) issued the rewritten Water Treatment Plant Waste Discharge General Permit (WTP General Permit) on June 16, 2004. The permit is effective on July 16, 2004. Click below to view the final permit and fact sheet. http://www.ecy.wa.gov/programs/wq/plants/weeds/milfoil.html
Ecology Home Water Quality Home General Information about Eurasian Watermilfoil Eurasian watermilfoil ( Myriophyllum spicatum follow this link to see where it is located in Washington ). It is very apparent that milfoil has been spread from lake to lake on boat trailers. Growth Habit Because it is widely distributed and difficult to control, milfoil is considered to be the most problematic plant in Washington. The introduction of milfoil can drastically alter a waterbody's ecology. Milfoil forms very dense mats of vegetation on the surface of the water. These mats interfere with recreational activities such as swimming, fishing, water skiing, and boating In eastern Washington milfoil interferes with power generation and irrigation by clogging water intakes. The sheer mass of plants can cause flooding and the stagnant mats can create good habitat for mosquitoes. Milfoil mats can rob oxygen from the water by preventing the wind from mixing the oxygenated surface waters to deeper water. The dense mats of vegetation can also increase the sedimentation rate by trapping sediments. Milfoil also starts spring growth sooner than native aquatic plants and can shade out these beneficial plants. When milfoil invades new territory, typically the species diversity of aquatic plants declines. While some species of waterfowl will eat milfoil, it is not considered to be a good food source.

They are divided into two families - 40 of the species belongs to the Encephalartos family and one to the Stangeria family. I`ve promised some people that I`ll have the Marula tree or Sclerocarya birrea subsp. africana in this update but I have only recently got hold of some fruit and seed. This tree will be listed in the next update. If you haven`t smelled a ripe Marula fruit you haven`t smelled the bushveld! The trees added in this update is Gardenia volkensii subsp. spatulifolia or Bushveld gardenia and Buddleja saligna or False olive . Both of these are excelent garden subjects.
