Research from the University of Minnesota sheds light on the effects of day length on bedding plant flowering. IN past "Fundamentals Of Flowering," articles (see www.greenhousegrower.com/grower_tools/html for the last two articles), we reviewed: 1 That plants have an early stage (juvenile), when they are not capable of being induced to flower, and a later stage (mature), when they are capable of being induced to flower.

Some species of bamboo flower only every 40 to 50 years. In an intriguing chain of events, these periods of flowering sometimes lead to the destruction of basic crops, and subsequent widespread famine, in areas of India where bamboo grows heavily. The last famine of this nature occurred from 1961 through 1965 in the hilly state of Mizoram in eastern India, an area of 21,000 square kilometers (12,482 square miles) with a population of more than 700,000. Reports suggest that another cycle of heavy bamboo flowering will happen in the region in 2003, which prompted India to call an emergency meeting of its national planning body last week to prepare for the possible calamity. There are hundreds of species of bamboo in the world. Some flower every year, some at irregular intervals. But a small percentage flowers in synchrony, over hundreds of square kilometers, every few decades. Researchers aren't sure how it happens.

Greenhouse Production
Adapted from Fact Sheet 593, University of Maryland, Cooperative Extension Service
Selecting a Crop
Determine the market potential for a crop before you grow it. Every grower should conduct a market analysis to determine what specific crops, product sizes and quantities are in demand.
Wholesale or Retail?
The crops grown are principally a function of the type of operation in which they are sold. Wholesale operations might produce both cell-pack bedding plants and seasonal pot plants. Retail operations in urban markets may find a stronger market for larger bedding plants and a wide selection of flowering plants. For example, fall sales of large chrysanthemums in 3-gallon and larger containers may appeal to individuals who want "instant landscapes." To determine which crops have excellent market potential, visit florists and garden centers both in your area and neighboring states. Local landscapers and professional gardeners also can provide insight into new crops. Some of the popular greenhouse production items are found in Table 1 Cut flower consumption is high, but the majority of greenhouse operators produce potted and bedding plants. Although the information here focuses on potted and bedding plant production, the information presented is applicable to cut flowers as well.

Daylength effects on flowering of bedding plants
Erik Runkle
Horticulture Are you optimizing photoperiod to promote rapid flowering of your bedding plants?  Many common bedding plant species are sensitive to daylength, or photoperiod, which refers to the number of hours of light in each day.  In Michigan, the shortest natural photoperiods are around 9.5 hours (in late December), and the longest days are around 16 hours (in late June).  Many bedding plants flower faster when the photoperiod is long, while other species flower earlier when the daylength is short. Short-day plants flower earlier and more uniformly if exposed to a limited number of hours of light during each day.  Some common examples of short-day plants include chrysanthemum, cosmos and dahlia.  To promote early flowering of most short-day plants, plants must be exposed to complete darkness for at least 12 hours per day.  This means that around early March, black cloth needs to be pulled at the end of the day or the beginning of the morning to exclude light from plants. See Greenhouse Alert article 02-05-02 on dahlias for more information In contrast, some bedding plants are long-day plants, meaning that they flower faster and more uniformly when exposed to long day lengths.  Some common examples of long-day plants include pansy and petunia. To induce rapid flowering of these plants from September through March, artificial lighting needs to be provided either at the end of the day or during the middle of the night.  Two successful strategies are to extend the day until the photoperiod is 16 hours or longer, or to provide night interruption lighting during the middle of the night for four hours.  In both strategies, the minimum light intensity for lighting should be at least 10 footcandles.

Mums for 1990

Snowsota (82-135-88) produces an informally mounded plant topped by 11/2-inch, full, white, long-lasting pompon flowers with light yellow centers. Centers fade to white, and blooms resist pinking in low temperatures. Clean, medium green foliage clothes stiff stems on 15-inch high, 24-inch wide plants. Blooming in the Twin Cities usually begins the last week of August. Parents are Spartan and Chiquita's Rival. Maroon Pride (82-A31-12) displays 3- to 31/2-inch, rich dark red, slow fading, fully double, flat decorative flowers atop medium height, uniformly mounded plants. Flowering in the Twin Cities usually begins the last week of August. Flowering peaks within several weeks, and continues to produce new blooms thereafter. Stems are clothed with clean, semi-glossy medium-dark-green foliage on 18-inch high, 28-inch wide plants. Flowering time is similar to Torch Song and about one month earlier than Minngopher and Minnruby. Parents are Ruby Mound and Autumn Fire. Both cultivars are adaptable to pot culture as spring-flowering plants in natural days. Application of a chemical growth regulator is recommended.

Dr Liz Dennis Introduction Dr Liz Dennis was interviewed in 2000 for the Australian Academy of Science's '100 Years of Australian Science' project funded by the National Council for the Centenary of Federation. This project is part of the Interviews with Australian scientists program. By viewing the interviews in this series, or reading the transcripts and extracts, your students can begin to appreciate Australia's contribution to the growth of scientific knowledge. Information on how to order a copy of the video of Dr Dennis's interview is available at www.science.org.au/scientists , together with a full list of videotaped interviews, transcripts and teachers notes. The following summary of Dennis's career sets the context for the extract chosen for these teachers notes. The extract highlights Dennis's interest in plant gene regulation and how plants respond to environmental stimuli. Use the focus questions that accompany the extract to promote discussion among your students.

100. Montana Plant Life - Flora And Identification Of Edible, Medicinal And Poisonous
Articles, images, and information on flowering, medicinal, edible, and poisonous plants of Montana.
http://montana.plant-life.org/
Welcome to Montana Plant Life!
This web site presents a wide variety of Montana wildflowers and other plants growing in the wilds of Montana. The flora of Montana is very varied and contains many species which range extends from the Pacific Northwest region as well as from the Great Plains. The site includes edible plants, medicinal plants as well as poisonous plants with sub-categories for edible roots, poisonous berries etc. Choices can also be made for displaying introduced vs. native plants and weeds. On the left menu there are indexes for english and scientific names, plus all presented species ordered after families. There are also lists for flowering month and plant types, for a total of 31 different indexes. Each presented species has its own page with pictures, a full description and, if applicable, information about edibility, medicinal and poisonous properties. The plant search engine from the title bar above can be used to search the entire plant identification database for any words or phrases, for example "lily", "arthritis", "Lewisia", "cancer" etc. If a name is not found in the indexes, it can often be found from a search instead. Each presented plant family has its own page with a description of its unique characteristics plus a plant identification online guide with pictures, short descriptions and links to the species that belong to it. The menu on the title bar above is the main navigation of the site. On the plant identification page, flower color, number of petals, leaf type etc. can be selected to find an unknown plant. This unique online plant identification system uses easy choices and images instead of a traditional plant identification key to arrive at the correct species. The site is created with the intent that anybody, without much prior knowledge about botany, should be able to identify and find information about Montana wildflowers and plants in general from the Montana flora. Therefore the guides on each family and genus page have also been set up to use easily recognizable features about the plants and, in addition, the images can be used to find the correct species.
