Fundamentals Of Flowering
Day Length Effects on Bedding Plant Flowering I
by John Erwin, Ryan Warner, and Neil Mattson
Department of Horticultural Science
University of Minnesota
This article is the first of a series presenting new research results from University of Minnesota researchers on effects of daylength and supplemental lighting on flowering of seed-propagated bedding plants.
Figure 1a. Figure 1b.
Figures 1a and 1b. The effect of providing a single week of continuous lighting (long-days induce flowering in petunia) to Petunia x hybrida 'White Storm' (a) and 'Purple Wave' (b). Note that 'White Storm' was sensitive to getting the single week of continuous lighting during the first week (weeks 0-1) and 'Purple Wave' was not sensitive to the week of continuous lighting until weeks 2-3 after germination. This showed that the juvenile period for 'White Storm' was shorter than that for 'Purple Wave'.
INFORMATION on what makes bedding plants flower could allow you to control flowering to schedule flowering accurately, as we do with many potted plant crops. Because of the importance of this information to the North American greenhouse industry, we started a long-term research study examining how daylength, supplemental lighting, and temperature affect flowering of many bedding plant species and how to precisely control flowering of bedding plants.
This article and the next will focus on how light intensity, or irradiance, affects flowering of bedding plant species. The following articles will show how daylength affects flowering of common and uncommon bedding plants. The results have tremendous applications for the industry, especially for those who grow bedding plants from seed.

Fundamentals Of Flowering
Day Length Effects on Bedding Plant Flowering III
by John Erwin, Ryan Warner, Charlie Rohwer and Neil Mattson
Department of Horticultural Science
University of Minnesota
In the last two articles we reviewed
that plants have an early stage (juvenile) when they are not capable of being induced to flower and a later stage (mature) when they are capable of being induced to flower, and
how light intensity or irradiance affects the length of the juvenile stage of many bedding plants. In the next two articles we will present research results on how day length affects flowering of many bedding plants. The last article will focus on pulling all this information on light and day length together in real examples.
We started working on how day length or photoperiod affects bedding plant flowering after we received two telephone calls; Terry Smith (Bellingham, Washington) asked how to induce petunias to flower earlier for early season sales in the Pacific Northwest, and Ron Wagner (Minneapolis, Minnesota) asked how to delay flowering of pansies germinated in August in Minnesota for fall sales in the Southern U.S. After some checking, we realized little recent research exists on how day length affects flowering of many bedding plants. In fact the last major research in this area was conducted in the late 1950's and early 1960's by John Seeley and H. Marc Cathey!
What we found, in short, was that day length affects flowering of many common bedding plants. In addition, we believe, many 'old fashioned' bedding plants such as 'Love-In-The-Mist' (Nigella) and lavatera (Lavatera) are no longer produced because we could not get them to flower in spring (Nigella and Lavatera are a long-day plants). Information we are generating now will allow growers to schedule bedding plant flowering in the same way mums and other potted plants are scheduled year-round. This will likely improve plant quality and allow growers to schedule plants to flower when they want to maximize profits and may allow them to produce new products.

Introduction to the Anthophyta
the flowering plants
If you have ever stopped to smell the roses, then you are familiar with the largest group of plants , the Anthophyta. The distinctive feature of this group is the flower , a cluster of highly-specialized leaves which participate in reproduction. Not all flowers are as conspicuous as the Magnolia blossom in the picture above; oaks, ivy, and grasses also produce flowers, but because they are not as showy we often do not notice them. The flowering plants are important in many ways above and beyond their aesthetic appeal in flower arrangements. Not a day goes by in which our lives are not affected by flowering plants. Nearly all of our food comes from flowering plants; grains, beans, nuts, fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices almost all come from plants with flowers, as do tea, coffee, chocolate, wine, beer, tequila, and cola. Much of our clothing comes from them as well cotton and linen are made from "fibers" of flowering plants, as are rope and burlap, and many commercial dyes are extracted from other flowering plants. We also owe them credit for a large number of our drugs, including over-the-counter medicines such as aspirin, prescribed drugs such as digitalis and atropine, and controlled drugs such as opium, cocaine, marijuana, and tobacco. Click on the buttons below to find out more about the Anthophyta.

Flowering Plants That Live On Other Plants
Under Construction: More Information And Photos To Come
W hen one organism steals all of its food from another organism's body it is called a parasite. The organism who is being robbed of its food supply is called the host. The parasitic mode of existence can be found throughout the kingdoms of life, from bacteria and fungi to insects, arachnids and worms. Parasitism has also evolved in many families of flowering plants. Some heterotrophic flowering plants get their nutrition from mycorrhizal soil fungi that are in turn attached to the roots of forest trees. These interesting plants are called mycotrophic wildflowers or mycoheterotrophs and are discussed in another article called fungus flowers
. True plant parasites can be hemiparasitic (semiparasitic) with photosynthetic leaves (such as mistletoe), or holoparasitic and completely dependent on their host (such as dodder). Some stem parasites, such as a local southern California desert native ( Pilostyles thurberi
), are endoparasitic and live completely within the stems of their host. The only part of

History
The botanical term "Angiosperm" ( Greek : αγγειον, receptacle, and σπερμα, seed) was coined in the form Angiospermae by Paul Hermann in , as the name of that one of his primary divisions of the plant kingdom, which included flowering plants possessing seeds enclosed in capsules, in contradistinction to his Gymnospermae, or flowering plants with achenial or schizo-carpic fruits—the whole fruit or each of its pieces being here regarded as a seed and naked. The term and its antonym were maintained by Carolus Linnaeus with the same sense, but with restricted application, in the names of the orders of his class

About the Nursery and Heirloom Plants
Our Plants Starts Hardiness Heirloom Seeds ... Custom Growing Welcome to Perennial Pleasures Nursery Perennial Pleasures Nursery is located in East Hardwick, Vermont, in a beautiful part of the state known as the North East Kingdom. The nursery, greenhouse and gardens are sited on the sunny fields behind our family home, an 1840s brick house at the edge of the village. We have a retail nursery open to the public and we also have a mail order plant catalog. A gift shop and tea room adjoin the nursery. All are open seasonally from May to September. The Nursery and Display Gardens The nursery was established in 1980 for the purpose of collecting and growing heirloom flowering plants and herbs from the 17th, 18th, 19th and early 20th century. While this aspect remains our specialty, we also grow a respectable number of perennials of a more recent vintage, a wide collection of phlox, plus a good selection of culinary and medicinal herbs. Currently we have about 950 varieties of plants at the nursery, and over 500 of these are listed in our mail order catalog. Most of our plants are field grown and proven hardy in our rigorous Zone 3 location.
