Endangered and Threatened Wildlife and Plants; Endangered Status for 12 Plants From the Hawaiian Islands

Table 1.Summary of Island Distribution of the Proposed Species Hawaiian Island Species - La Ne N Ni K O Mo L Ka M H
Hibiscus brackenridgei occurs in lowland dry to mesic forest and shrubland from 130 to 800 m (425 to 2,625 ft) in elevation (Geesink et al. 1990; HHP 1992e1, 1992e4, 1992e5, 1992e8, 1992e14, 1992e19, 1992e25). Associated plant species include `a`ali`i, alahe`e, Erythrina sandwicensis (wiliwili), Reynoldsia sandwicensis (`ohe), and Sida fallax (`ilima) (HHP 1992e1 to 1992e3, 1992e6, 1992e8, 1992e20, 1992e23, 1992e25). The primary threats to this species are habitat degradation and possible predation by pigs, goats, axis deer, and cattle; competition with alien plant species; road construction; and stochastic extinction and/or reduced reproductive vigor due to the small number of existing individuals.

A environmental organization dedicated to the Restoration of Ecolibrium through the preservation of endangered and threatened plants. A California Nonprofit Public Benefit Corporation.

Oasis Botanical Sanctuary
"Join us in moving towards our common goal:
The Restoration of Ecolibrium."
Our Mission
To propagate, protect, and sustain exotic and medicinal species of endangered flora through the construction of vast botanical sanctuaries. These sanctuaries will be designed with the highest technologies of the modern day. Each sanctuary will be designed to grow quantities of endangered plants for re-propagation and land restoration projects. There will also be seed storage chambers for long term seed preservation. To develop an ecological research institute whose primary goal is to create computer data-bases on the flora, ecology, and the bio-diversity of earth's ecosystems; thus to promote environmental stewardship. The Oasis institute plans to develop one of the worlds first cyber space programs designed to unite the environmental movement into a single union, This will be done by researching and processing enough ecologically scientific data to declare the earth as an endangered species in a court of law . This will aid in world wide environmental protection. The Oasis institute also plans to accumulate and bring together environmental documentation on the bio-diversity of exotic plants as well as their present and past medicinal and shamanic uses for an on-line computer library.

    http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/ets/

Definitions A species is considered endangered if the species is threatened with extinction throughout all or a significant portion of its range within Minnesota. A species is considered threatened if the species is likely to become endangered within the foreseeable future throughout all or a significant portion of its range within Minnesota. A species is considered a species of special concern if, although the species is not endangered or threatened, it is extremely uncommon in Minnesota, or has unique or highly specific habitat requirements and deserves careful monitoring of its status. Species on the periphery of their range that are not listed as threatened may be included in this category along with those species that were once threatened or endangered but now have increasing or protected, stable populations.
    Minnesota's endangered species law
Minnesota's Endangered Species Statute (Minnesota Statutes, Section 84.0895) requires the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to adopt rules designating species meeting the statutory definitions of endangered, threatened, or species of special concern. The resulting List of Endangered, Threatened, and Special Concern Species is codified as Minnesota Rules, Chapter 6134. The Endangered Species Statute also authorizes the DNR to adopt rules that regulate treatment of species designated as endangered and threatened. These regulations are codified as Minnesota Rules, Parts 6212.1800 to 6212.2300.

    DEFINITIONS
** Federally Endangered Species: Any species which is in danger of extinction throughout all or a significant portion of its range. * Federally Threatened Species: Any species which is likely to become an endangered species within the foreseeable future throughout all or a significant portion of its range. Illinois Endangered Species: Any species which is in danger of extinction as a breeding species in Illinois. State Threatened Species: Any breeding species which is likely to become a state endangered species within the foreseeable future in Illinois. CRITERIA FOR STATE LISTING
A species shall be included on the official list of endangered and threatened species when one or more of the following criteria exists: 1 Species included in the Federal list of Endangered or Threatened Species, 2 Species proposed for Federal Endangered or Threatened Species which occur in Illinois, 3 Species which formerly were widespread in Illinois but have been nearly extirpated from the State due to habitat destruction, collecting, or other pressures resulting from the development of Illinois, 4 Species which exhibit very restricted geographic ranges of which Illinois is a part, 5 Species which exhibit restricted habitats or low populations in Illinois, or 6 Species which are significant disjuncts in Illinois i.e., the Illinois population is far removed from the rest of the species’ range.

The following plants are Federally listed as threatened or endangered species found in New York State. Click on the species name to see the USFWS species profile: Northern wild monk's-hood
    Aconitum noveboracense

    Federal Status: Threatened
Northern wild monkshood is an herbaceous perennial with blue, hood-shaped flowers which are distinctive. The plants range from one to four feet in height, with wide, toothed leaves. They prefer to occupy cool sites such as stream sides or shaded cliff sides. Flowers typically bloom between June and September. Degradation and loss of habitat are the primary threats to species survival. Collection by humans has also been problematic in some areas. Sandplain gerardia
    Agalinis acuta

    Federal Status: Endangered
The only Federally Endangered plant species in New York State, sandplain gerardia is a small annual plant with delicate pink blossoms. Six of the twelve known natural populations in the world can be found in coastal grassland areas on Long Island. Loss of habitat to development, and encroachment by invasive exotic competitors are the main reasons why this plant is considered to be in imminent danger of extirpation.

Massachusetts List of Endangered, Threatened and Special Concern Species Definitions "Endangered" (E) species are native species which are in danger of extinction throughout all or part of their range, or which are in danger of extirpation from Massachusetts, as documented by biological research and inventory. "Threatened" (T) species are native species which are likely to become endangered in the forseeable future, or which are declining or rare as determined by biological research and inventory. "Special concern" (SC) species are native species which have been documented by biological research or inventory to have suffered a decline that could threaten the species if allowed to continue unchecked, or which occur in such small numbers or with such restricted distribution or specialized habitat requirements that they could easily become threatened within Massachusetts. Any native species listed as endangered or threatened by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is also included on the state list. The rules and regulations and precise definitions relative to the establishment of the Commonwealth's list of endangered, threatened, and special concern species are set forth in 321 CMR 10.00 et seq. Species in BOLD TYPE may occur in Massachusetts wetlands. Click here for a key to the Federal Status abbreviations appearing on the list.
