Utah Conservation Data Center
An integral part of the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, the Utah Conservation Data Center (UCDC) is the central repository for Utah biodiversity information. Although the UCDC focuses primarily on Utah's rare native species and other high-interest species (game animals and raptors, for example), information on all Utah vertebrate wildlife species, many invertebrate species, and numerous plant species is available. Utah Conservation Data Center information is a collection of data from many sources. Major data contributors include the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, the Utah Reclamation Mitigation and Conservation Commission, the United States National Park Service, the United States Forest Service, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, the United States Bureau of Land Management, Utah State University, the University of Utah, Brigham Young University, the network of state/province Natural Heritage Programs and Conservation Data Centers, The Nature Conservancy, NatureServe, various museums, and numerous individuals. The UCDC strives to provide accurate information in user-friendly formats. If you have a question or comment about the UCDC, Utah biodiversity data, or this web site, please e-mail us at:

Conservation programmes are undertaken on a wide range of endangered and threatened plants and their habitats. An advanced range of techniques, including storage and cryopreservation of seeds, embryos and pollen, and micropropagation, are used to support both ex situ and in situ conservation projects. We are increasingly called upon for advice and to help with the development of international conservation strategies.

Threatened species and ecological communities
Australia is home to more than one million species, many of which are found nowhere else in the world. About 85 per cent of flowering plants, 84 per cent of mammals, more than 45 per cent of birds, and 89 per cent of inshore, temperate-zone fish are endemic - that is they are only found in Australia. Changes to the landscape and native habitat as a result of human activity has put many of these unique species at risk. Over the last two hundred years many species of plants and animals have become extinct. For the other species of plants and animals whose survival is threatened a range of management and conservation measures are in place. The Australian Government is working in partnership with state, territory and local governments, non-government organisations, tertiary institutions and community groups to ensure the protection of our native species.

Endangered and Threatened Species
What Are Endangered and Threatened Species?
A century ago, a bird called the passenger pigeon lived in North America. There were so many passenger pigeons that people often saw great flocks of them flying overhead containing thousands, even millions, of birds. Today, there is not a single one left. What happened?
The passenger pigeon became extinct . All living passenger pigeons disappeared from the earth entirely. The passenger pigeon became extinct for two reasons. First, the forests where it lived were cut down to make way for farms and cities. Second, many pigeons were shot for sport and because they were good to eat. At that time, there were no hunting laws to protect endangered species like there are now.
The passenger pigeon is one of the many plants and animals that once lived on our planet and have become extinct. For example, dinosaurs, mammoths, and saber-toothed tigers all became extinct long ago. More recently, the dodo bird and the sea mink also have disappeared. Extinction has been going on since life began on earth. But today, extinction is happening faster than ever before.

The Georgia Plant Conservation Alliance is an innovative network of public gardens, government agencies, and environmental organizations committed to preserving Georgia's endangered flora. Formed in 1995, GPCA initiates and coordinates efforts to protect natural habitats and endangered species through biodiversity management and public education. From rigorous scientific research to hands-on stewardship projects with elementary schools, the combined resources, expertise and outreach strategies of GPCA members provide powerful tools for plant conservation in Georgia.
