Principles of classification and evolution of vascular plants; taxonomic tools and collection techniques; use of keys. Field and laboratory studies emphasizing identification of local flowering plants and recognition of major plant families. Meets June 19-July 15, 2005. Students who enroll in Plant Taxonomy at Lakeside will spend four weeks exploring the many habitats (wetland, prairie, forest) of Iowa's lakes region to study the diverse flora of this region (home to more than 800 vascular plant species). The majority of class time is spent in the field. Topics to be covered include principles of vascular plant classification; vegetative and reproductive morphology; recognition characteristics of 40 major plant families, use of dichotomous keys; and field collection methodology. Each student will prepare and submit a collection of 100 vascular plants as a course requirement. There will be one overnight field trip to central Iowa during the third week of this course. There are two required texts for this course: (1) Vascular Plant Families (1977, James Payne Smith, Jr., Mad River Press, Inc.; ISBN #0916422070); and (2)

Plant Taxonomy
Taxonomy is the classification of life forms into distinct groups. Linnaeus (Carl von Linné), a Swedish botanist of the 18th century developed the taxonomy of plants and initiated the binomial system of nomenclature. Before this, plants and animals were grouped into broad generalisations according to such things as their habitat or uses, but this became unwieldy and a universal system was needed.
Living creatures have been divided into two major groups, the Plant Kingdom and the Animal Kingdom. The Plant Kingdom is a hierarchical system, as follows:
KINGDOM - DIVISION - CLASS - ORDER - FAMILY - GENUS - SPECIES
To illustrate the system, on Gardening Australia we featured the Moraceae (Mulberry) family:
Kingdom - Plant
Division - Angiosperm (Flowering plants). Division is the broadest way of dividing plants. Flowers, or the sexual reproductive parts of a plant, are the fingerprints of plant classification since they are the most stable, unchanging part of the plant.
Class - Dicotyledon. Division is divided into two classes, 'monocotyledon' or 'dicotyledon'. Cotyledon means 'seed leaf'. Monocotyledons are plants which have veins parallel to the leaf margins and a single leaf after germination (e.g. grasses). Dicotyledons bear two leaves after germination (e.g. peas, tomatoes, roses and a host of others).

DNA Analysis Revolutionizes Taxonomy An interview with botanist Walter Judd

otany professor Walter Judd was raised in rural southern Michigan, where he developed a keen interest in natural history. He came to UF after receiving his PhD from Harvard in 1978, and his research primarily concerns the systematics and evolution of flowering plants. He has twice received the CLAS Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Instruction and is currently the president-elect of the American Society of Plant Taxonomists. Cn: Plant taxonomy, or the identification and grouping of plants, has been undergoing rapid change. Why is this happening?
Judd:
This is a very exciting time in our field. In fact, taxonomy is actually in a state of uproar as a result of revolutionary advances in the way we do our work. One of the main things I'm involved with is called revisionary studieswe are trying to reconstruct the history of evolutionary events that have occurred within a particular group of organisms. In the past, when we named and grouped plants, we relied heavily on morphology (a plant's structural and physical characteristics) and chemical analysis. However, with the recent advent of cladistic analysis of DNA data, we are now able to construct and test our evolutionary hypotheses. As a result, plant taxonomy, or systematics, has become more objective and scientific. Cn: How have cladistics and DNA changed the way plants are named and grouped?

Class meets M,W 1:30-3:30 in V106
Course Description
In this class you will learn the taxonomy and characteristics of about 30 common flowering plant families of the upper Midwest and how to identify plants using technical keys. The time will be split between the classroom and field trips. In addition to scheduled class time, I expect you to spend on average about two hours outside of class for each hour that class meets, or roughly 8 hours each week, working on your own. My goals for this course are to help you to 1) learn the characteristics of common flowering plant families, 2) learn to identify plants using taxonomic keys, and 3) gain an appreciation of the diversity and ecology of flowering plants in this region. Many days we will spend all (or at least most) of the class time outside. Come prepared for rain, poison ivy, steep terrain. Wear appropriate clothing (sturdy shoes, long pants, rain gear) for each class period, even if a field trip is not scheduled . You will also need to bring your textbooks, hand lens, and field notebook to every class.
