ISHS Acta Horticulturae 299: Forum on Strategies for Horticultural Societies in the 1990's, XXIII IHC
PLANT SOCIETIES ARE MORE THAN HORTICULTURAL SCIENCE
Author:
H.B. Tukey Jr Abstract:
Most of the presentations in this symposium refer to national and international professional societies in horticultural science. But when I talk about plant societies, I am referring to the great number of diverse groups and organizations that are associated with horticulture but with programs, goals, and memberships of their own. These plant societies have a great influence on scientific horticulture, and they look to the horticultural scientist for expertise, cooperation, and assistance. We would do well to know them better. Horticultural science is one of the few academic disciplines that deals not only with its own agenda of science and research, but with the agenda of people, organizations, agencies, and societies that are associated with horticulture in some way. These people and their groups are large in number, diverse in skills and abilities, and equally diverse in their aims and goals. They include professional horticultural managers, such as landscape contractors, landscape maintenance managers, nurserymen and growers of horticultural plants; managers of street trees such as municipal arborists, electric utility companies, State and Federal foresters, urban foresters, and individual commercial arborists; and horticulturists interested in a particular plant or group of plants as a hobby interest.

Soil is a very precious resource that has a range of functions. These include support for plants, ecosystem biodiversity, and growing medium for crops. Soils interact with the wider environment, acting as a store and filter for water. Soils support many human activities, and preserve evidence of our cultural heritage. The Society promotes research by organising several conferences each year and by the publication of its two scientific journals, the European Journal of Soil Science , and Soil Use and Management . It promotes education through a number of initiatives aimed at schools, colleges and universities. The Society has a regular and varied programme of scientific conferences on a wide range of soil-related issues. Find out more about

SITE MAP Email: Many families of plants contain succulent (i.e. water storing) species that have adapted to the arid climates of deserts and semi-deserts. Many of these habitats are associated with high day-time temperatures and special mechanisms have evolved to collect and conserve the limited moisture that is available, sometimes only from dews, mists and fogs. Convergent evolution has often resulted in similar solutions to the problems of living in a harsh environment, and it may be obvious that similar looking plants belong to different families only when they are flowering. Sadly, like many other flora and fauna, succulent plants are under pressure throughout the world from encroaching urbanisation, agriculture and the depredations of widespread non-indigenous livestock such as goats. While these pressures may be inevitable, there is much that succulent plant enthusiasts can do to promote the conservation and survival of this interesting group of plants.
