Save a personal copy of this article and quickly find it again with Furl.net. It's free! Save it. When I ask my preservice teachers to think back to their fondest memories of teaching social studies at the elementary or middle school level, they usually tell me about how teachers made history interesting and fun through hands-on activities. Most often, they reminisce about memories of field trips they took. When students visit historical sites, they are able to visualize what the daily life and work was like for people of the past (McEachron, 2001). Field trips enable students to connect history to their daily lives, and better understand the daily struggles and lives of people from the past. In our area of rural East Texas, students remember trips they made to Millard's Crossing, a renovated historical village, and the Hoya Library, a historic home where Sam Houston once visited.

    Whitman Mission NHS - Education

Why visit Whitman Mission NHS? In 1836 Dr. Marcus and Mrs. Narcissa Whitman crossed the United States from New York to "Oregon Country" with Henry and Eliza Spalding and William Gray. Narcissa and Eliza became the first white women to cross the Rocky mountains. The Whitmans set up a mission at Waiilatpu, where they intended to teach the Cayuse how to read and write, how to farm, and about the Christian gospel. In 1843, Marcus Whitman helped guide the first wagon train to take wagons all the way to the Willamette Valley. Tragically in 1847, rumors, cultural differences, and mis-communication led to the deaths of the Whitmans and eleven others by several Cayuse after a measles outbreak had decimated the tribe. The events of 1836 to 1847 here at Whitman Mission played a significant role in American and Cayuse history in the Pacific Northwest. It is an excellent place to learn about the Cayuse and other plateau Indians, and the missionary movement in the Northwest, and the early Oregon Trail. One of the reasons this site is such a valuable educational experience is that this is where the Whitman Mission was actually located. When you wander the grounds you are retracing the steps of the Whitmans, the Cayuse, and countless Oregon Trail emigrants.

    Using Primary Sources
Teachers have long recognized the value of students reading accounts of historical events written in the words of those who were there. Excerpts from James Madison's journals kept during the Constitutional Convention is a typical example of the primary sources that teachers use to explain how the Constitution was developed and how it is interpreted today. But the Internet opens the way to an enormous range of resources. For instance, imagine reading Tacitus's eyewitness account of the burning of Rome, including the descriptions of "terrified, shrieking women" and "helpless old and young" fleeing the conflagration, or Corporal E. C. Nightingale's frightening memories from on the deck of the battleship Arizona in 1941. Both of these are available to teachers and students at [http://www.ibiscom.com], one of several commercial web sites that provide superb resources for teachers and students.

Project TRIPS: Teaching Revitalized through Informal Programs in Science
There is a growing consensus in the science education field that informal science institutions (ISIs) should be more directly involved in the systemic reform movement going on in the nation’s schools. More and more educators are coming to understand the tremendous educational value of ISIs. Up until now, however, there has been no organized attempt to involve ISIs on a broad scale in the systemic reform agenda. Project TRIPS is designed to address this need and to foster new kinds of relationships between ISIs and schools. Initiated by the Bronx Zoo and funded by the National Science Foundation, Project TRIPS is enabling some of America’s most talented educators from ISIs and schools to work together to enhance the capacity of teachers to improve the way that life science is taught to adolescents, and increase the relevance of ISIs to the new directions in science education. Project TRIPS consists of three main components that are carried out by teams of professionals: 1)The teamwork commences with an intensive, 12-day
