Field Trip Planning Made Easy By Jo Ann Lohl Spears Where do children learn more: seeing a picture of a milk cow or petting one in a dairy? Talking about a hospital or walking through one? Hearing you talk about fire safety, or hearing a uniformed firefighter talk about it? This article provides a guide for planning and organizing field trips, suggests a list of possibilities, and offers ideas for alternatives when traditional field trips may not be possible.
Is a field trip worth the trouble?
In deciding whether to include field trips in the curriculum, teachers need to consider a number of factors.
Age of Children

How old are the children? Infants, toddlers, and 2-year olds are too young for traditional field trips. Preschool children can benefit from many kinds of trips, with adequate supervision and guidance. School-age children can often help choose and plan trips.
Value
Uniqueness

How often have the children gone to a particular site? How often will they go again? If second graders always visit the local history center in the spring, avoid a trip there in the summer.

Educational Outreach
Behind our doors are worlds of wonder and educational energy.
And we have them opened wide to the young minds of our community. Our aim is to spark in our visitors: imagination, creativity, curiosity and an appreciation for the natural beauty that surrounds us all. We hope no student visitor ever looks at water the same again. And that, maybe, what they see here today, will change all of our tomorrows. Help us to help them make a difference. School Visits
It's a classroom of unmatched depths - filled with curious critters and interesting habitats designed to give each and every student a whole new perspective of the earth's watery domains. Our aim at the Newport Aquarium is to have every student visitor leave the Newport Aquarium a different person. More knowledgeable about the oceans. More respectful of marine life. Impressed by the vastness of the world's diversity. And inspired to learn more. Toward that aim, we invite school groups - Preschool through 12th grade - to visit us at special education discount rates during regular operating hours.

Health and safety on educational visits
Health and Safety of Pupils on Educational Visits A three-part supplement to the good practice guide was produced in 2002:
  • Standards for LEAs in Overseeing Educational Visits sets out good practice for local education authorities in overseeing educational visits carried out by schools. Schools, youth services and others may find the principles set out here useful too. Standards for Adventure is aimed at the teacher or youth worker who leads young people on adventure activities. A Handbook for Group Leaders is aimed at anyone who leads groups of young people on any kind of educational visit. It sets out good practice in supervision, ongoing risk assessment and emergency procedures. Group Safety at Water Margins is aimed at anyone who organises learning activities that take place near or in water, such as a walk along a river bank or seashore, collecting samples from ponds or streams, or paddling or walking in gentle, shallow water.

Everyone loves field trips. Maybe it's the idea of escaping the four walls of the classroom and doing something new and different. Maybe it's the fact that children get to experience more hands-on activities than are usually possible from behind a desk. Whatever the reason, field trips can be a lot of fun, except for the people planning them. Now, educators can use the the Internet to make field trip planning simpler and more efficient. You might be surprised by the number and variety of field trips just waiting to be scheduled through the World Wide Web. From National Parks to environmental education, exciting desk-free adventures are just a click away.

This guide will enable you to further understand your legal obligations and responsibilities in connection with school visits and trips. It will help you to manage and control the health and safety risks associated with taking pupils out of school. Part 2 covers trips involving activities with a higher risk, and visits to foreign countries. As with all RoSPA guidance, this should be used in conjunction with LEA and other regulations, union documents and any other specialised advice from professional bodies. Before undertaking any school trip you are legally required to carry out a written risk assessment. Schools have a duty of care towards pupils and in an activity where there is an amount of risk, you will need to show that you have considered, and as a result, taken "all reasonable precautions". As part of your legal Health and Safety duties, your school will need to show that there is effective communication at all levels.
