Current Year UNI Candidates An Introduction to Overseas Teaching HISTORY Interest in international settings continues to grow among contemporary educators, and the opportunities to do so seem to be keeping pace. International teaching opportunities began in 1888 in Mexico City with the establishment of the first American school. This school provided education comparable to that in the United States for the children of U.S. citizens residing there. The opening of the first military dependents' schools occurred in 1946. In addition to these schools, many missionary schools were established around the world whose student populations included both children of missionaries and nationals of the host country. Changing political and economic factors, the expansion of multi-national corporations, and the predominance of the U.S. university system have all played an important role in the growth of American international schools. The world truly seems to be getting smaller. Search News Briefs Mid-Michigan plans education job fair Retirements, competition change the way schools recruit teachers May 2, 2000 Lansing State Journal Mark Mayes Districts start earlier and offer incentives to land candidates For years, teacher recruiters did most of their work after everyone else went home for the summer. Teacher shortages and competition have changed that. Local school recruiters now have to start earlier and go farther to attract new teachers, while districts have been forced to offer signing bonuses and revise how they handle retirement notices. And for the first time, mid-Michigan schools are inviting prospective teachers to a job fair in June. "We're trying to really attract the candidate to the area," said Donna Rehbeck, human resources director for the Ingham Intermediate School District. "We're saying, `Come to mid-Michigan.'" The Lansing School District this year already has sent recruiters to the South, targeting minority candidates. The district last year also began offering bonuses to teachers who announce their retirement plans early so officials know how many job offers they could make. In Detroit and elsewhere, districts reward new teachers with signing bonuses ranging from $300 to $6,500 a year. Massachusetts offers $20,000 over four years.
