Entry #38 - June 21, 1999 - The Final Word "Writing has slowed me down and built in "wait time," for myself and for others. It has caused me to go beyond my assumptions and pursue the conversations which need to be pursued."
Looking back over this school year I am aware of all the projects which I set out to complete. In most cases I/we made some progress, but none fully realized the goals which I had set. Rather than get demoralized about this reality, I've decided to re-examine my goal setting and my follow-through so I can do better in the future.
First, I'm considering the Coalition of Essential Schools' view that "less is more." On the surface I have maintained agreement with this concept, but far too often I have been guilty of trying to "cover the curriculum."
I'm reminded of the mosaic mural which my students and I designed in the fall. We did a great job the sea life mural is truly magnificent! However, our plans to set up a mini-museum for primary students was left by the wayside when I judged that time was racing by and we weren't going to get to the rest of our curriculum before June.
Students have continued to ask me when we might begin to invite younger students for lessons, and I've taken to answering them with rather vague comments about next year. While it's true that we would not have covered a lot of other material if we had continued with our planning and implementation of the mini-museum, I actually believe it would have made for a richer learning experience.

73. Frontline: Testing Our Schools: Testing. Teaching. Learning? | PBS
The National Center for Fair Open Testing (FairTest), is an advocacy evaluation of students and school workers is fair, open, and educationally sound.
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/schools/testing/
var loc = "../../../"; What are the uses and misuses of tests? Do higher test scores mean better schools? How does the intense pressure to raise test scores affect the quality of teaching and learning in the classroom? These are some of the questions FRONTLINE set out to explore in interviews with educators, policymakers, and educational testing experts across the country. What we found is that although standards-based reform has widespread support, experts see a danger in our reliance on standardized tests as the primary measure of school quality. Without the right kinds of tests, they say, and without an understanding of their proper uses, we may do more harm than good to public education in America.
In the course of making "Testing Our Schools," correspondent John Merrow and producer John Tulenko interviewed teachers and school administrators who are grappling with the realities of increased testing and its effects for better and worse on the quality of teaching and learning. Here are excerpts from selected interviews with educators in two states, Virginia and California, where testing has already transformed what goes on in the classroom.
"Today we are rushing headlong in search of the 'Holy Grail' of rising test scores," writes John Merrow. "Many unfortunate decisions are being made as pressure for 'accountability' overwhelms common sense." This excerpt from Merrow's new book

Panama Project Update July 5 El Bongo:
The Volunteers already have several projects in full swing. They are teaching everything from dance to music to art, and they run with youth in the community each morning. There has been talk of bringing in business Volunteers from the Peace Corps and other local experts to help start some kind of economic cooperative in the community. Buena Vista: The Volunteers in Buena Vista kindly threw their Project Supervisor a fun birthday bash this week. Many community members and AMIGOS Project Staff attended, and they all shared a night of dancing, singing, birthday cake and delicious Panamanian food. The Volunteers have been making excellent progress on plans for a community park and an end-of-the-summer health fair. Rio de Jesus: The Volunteers have been keeping busy, teaching English classes three times a week, giving talks on teamwork in the school, meeting with the women’s group, and planning a soccer tournament for the new women’s team. Soon they hope to begin working on painting community trash cans and educating kids about littering and caring for the community. El Centeno: The Volunteers were lucky enough to attend a local Festival de San Pedro, which they enjoyed very much. They have also begun planning a project to expand the community’s sports equipment shed, which will eventually become the site of a community mural. They look forward to planning more projects and talking with the community.
