Chapter 7: Planning Tips
Mark Warschauer
Heidi Shetzer

Christine Meloni
Introduction ... Conclusion
Putting these guidelines into effect can be a complex process, especially in light of the additional complexities of using computer laboratories and accessing the Internet (see Figure 1 ). Here are some planning tips:
  • time Be aware that on-line projects take a lot of time to implement. It is better to do a few tasks or projects and do them well rather than to take on too much the first time. Start with something clear and relatively straightforward, and add new dimensions in future semesters if you wish. For example, WOW! Washington on the Web (Meloni, 1999; see chapter 5) began with reviews of restaurants; students themselves later asked to add reviews of other institutions, such as museums and theaters.
computer and Internet access If possible, make sure ahead of time that students have access to school computers outside class so they can practice on their own. If you have a choice of either hardware or software, choose the most user-friendly types. (See

Activity-oriented health fairs inspire more learning than a passive look-and-see health fair. Topic choices are limitless. Your health fair planning committee can help choose topics. Ask participant agencies to come prepared to provide a hands-on teaching activity in their booth. These booths should provide something to do that will teach as least one important point about their subject. Here are some activity-oriented, hands-on ideas for your health fair.

  • "In planning for the future, and particularly in developing new educational specifications, we've found the greatest need is to prepare the staff to break through the paradigms under which we work and live. Our district used a futures symposium to precede the development of a new instructional delivery system and the preparation of educational specifications for new schools and remodeling projects. "The futures symposium featured leading educational futurists who spoke on three topics: practical application of technology in the classroom and other areas of school buildings; the environment in which learning and technology takes place; and the human element that demands that we provide interaction among students, between teachers and students, and among other persons within schools. Small groups of teachers, administrators, parents, and representatives of architectural firms discussed the topics and questioned the speakers. The groups then listed questions, suggestions, and comments on how they felt the district should develop the new instructional delivery system and prepare new educational specifications. "The symposium was held in spring 1988, and is being followed up with a new program called Strategy 2020. At least 20 small groups are now developing an executive summary, lists of problems to be solved, recommendations, and assessments of the impact on facilities, costs, and training needs. The sub-committees that focus on instructional strategies, organizational structures, and support services. The strand committees' resulting reports will be brought together in a coordinated vision and presented to the board of directors for adoption.
