"Work Worth Doing" Dean Linda Maxson Delivered at the May 7 DEO Meeting, in the Old Capitol Senate chamber This summer will mark the end of my fourth year at the heart of The University of Iowa as Dean of the College of Liberal Arts. It will be an extra pleasure to honor our undergraduate degree candidates at Saturday's commencement ceremony, knowing that many of them arrived on campus at the start of my first year here. It is from this vantage that I wish to share with you my perspectives on the state of the College. These perspectives are built on four years of working with a great team of associate deans and staff in the College offices. I welcome and encourage you to share your views with me and the associate deans in the coming weeks and months. I am delighted that in our centennial year the faculty and the Regents approved our new name: The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences This is work worth doing!

Never having enough dollars to operate our adult basic education programs has and probably always will be a problem. Because the State Department operates on such a tight budget, it is virtually impossible for them to distribute a sufficient amount of money to each local program. With this in mind, I felt it necessary to find other means of dollars that could be used to supplement our local ABE budgets. Having experienced some success in this area, I realize that raising the dollars is only half the battle. It is equally important to know how to systematically plan a yearly budget. Therefore, I have chosen for my project Raising and Projecting Funds for a Supplemental Budget. One of the things I realized in talking to these managers was the fact that we are not utilizing our volunteer boards/councils as we should. They are wasted resources if we don't fully understand their role and responsibilities within our organization. I received excellent training from The Tennessee Literacy Coalition (TLC) several years ago on boardmanship. It was because of this training that I was able to develop a strong, working Board. Although I have utilized my Board in the area of fund raising, I have neglected to draw from their professional abilities.

INITATION PRE-PLANNING PROJECT INITATION PRE-PLANNING PROJECT INITIATION A capital project begins when someone believes that facilities are not available to allow them to successfully complete their goals. At this point, they become a client of Facilities Planning. They feel the solution to the problem is new or remodeled space that more fully meets their needs. These ideas come from a variety of sources including students, faculty, staff, and the public -"If we only had a new building with more space and better equipment, we could be successful". Projects become candidates for further development after approval by the President and following review by the affected Deans or Vice President and the Provost. Capital projects are often the result of programmatic changes. A department has a problem with space as a result of changes in their program or deterioration of their current facilities. Enrollment changes have triggered the need for new or modified facilities. Changing research activities requiring different or additional space to support laboratory needs have become a major influence in the need for space.

Board of Trustees Authorizes Planning for Centennial Campaign
December 7, 2004 The SMU Board of Trustees has taken the first step in preparing for a comprehensive funding campaign that will accelerate SMU's move into the top tier of universities nationwide. At its meeting December 3, the Board passed a resolution designating the 2005-2006 academic year for "planning of the Centennial Campaign for SMU." The remainder of the 2004-2005 academic year will be used to prepare for the official planning phase. The Centennial Campaign is so named because it will culminate during the period marking the 100th anniversary of SMU's founding in 2011 and its opening in 2015. During the campaign planning year, SMU's leadership will address issues such as timing of the campaign's quiet phase and public phase; financing the campaign; establishing monetary and participation goals; and determining staff and volunteer structures. Funding priorities will be determined in collaboration with deans and vice presidents as part of SMU's strategic planning process. Campaign planning also will include involvement of students, faculty, and other campus constituencies. The Centennial Campaign must raise significant funds especially for endowments supporting academic programs, faculty positions, and student scholarships to advance SMU's rise in quality and reputation.

Conservation Fund Advisory Board
Introduction
The New York State Conservation Fund Advisory Council was established by Chapter Four of the Laws of 1982 as a branch of the State Executive Department. It provides the license buying public of the State of New York with an oversight in the expenditure of Conservation Fund monies, there by ensuring that the fund is spent in accordance with the Environmental Conservation Law, specifically for the care, management, protection and enlargement of the fish and game resources of the State and for the promotion of public fishing, hunting and trapping. Under Chapter 308 of the laws of 1994, the Council was reestablished as the Conservation Fund Advisory Board (CFAB) and removed from the jurisdiction of the Executive Law and placed under the Environmental Conservation Law. The change allowed the addition of ex-officio members to the Board (Senate and Assembly Environmental Committee, Senate Finance Committee, Assembly Ways and Means Committee and DEC Commissioner, or their representatives), in an effort to speed up communications and give the panel the ability to make more timely decisions.
