Along with the wildflowers has come an extraordinary growth of weeds. Weeds can be removed by hand, mowing or chemical control. In an effort to decrease the threat of wildfire this summer, some municipalities are stepping up code enforcement efforts by citing property owners for overgrown vegetation. County Plan Of Work
    I.Executive Summary
Columbus County is the third largest county in land area in North Carolina and has 10 incorporated towns (Whiteville, Tabor City, Fair Bluff, Chadbourn, Lake Waccamaw, Bolton, Sandyfield, Brunswick, Cerro Gordo, and Boardman). Columbus County is close to two large retirement areas, the North Carolina coast, and Myrtle Beach. The county has witnessed a trickle of retirees moving into the county, but not in large numbers. Columbus County's population is 48.1% male and has a median age of 36.9. 7,358 people, or 13.8% of the county's population, are over the age of 65. 1,269 Columbus County residents, or 2.3% of the county's total population, reported themselves as Hispanic or Latino (of any race). The economy in Columbus County has changed over the years in major ways. Agriculture, while still important in county earnings and income, employs only 2% of the workforce. Tobacco is still a cornerstone in the agricultural sector in county earnings despite quota reductions and national trends that have caused its decline in recent years. Timber is a large industry as over 400,000 acres of the county are forested. The unemployment rate has hovered between 6% and 10.6% since 1990, and only 500 more people are in the workforce than in 1990, despite 10.4% growth in the population. Wood product industries in manufacturing are prevalent here and have been for nearly 100 years, producing products such as lumber, plywood, furniture, pulp, paperboard, tools, cabinets, and pallets. However, this industry sector is under heavy global competition. International Paper remains the county's largest industry, largest employer, and largest taxpayer. The textile and apparel industries began to arrive in the 1940s and 1950s, but then began relocating or closing in the 1990s due to global competition. This sector has been the hardest hit area of the county economy. Since 1995, Columbus County has lost over 2,500 apparel/textile jobs.

Organizations The College of Agricultural Sciences and Technology Student Executive Council
SEC provides a means whereby the students in CAST are more fully represented, both within CAST and the Associated Students, Inc (ASI) Senate. SEC supplies an avenue of communication between the students, the faculty and the administration of the CAST. Students are given the opportunity to have their voices heard by serving on the CAST ad hoc committees, and the university Student Cabinet. SEC meetings allow clubs from different departments within the college to communicate with each other. The clubs have the advantage of submitting a combined budget request for ASI funds each year. Participation in the SEC is beneficial not only to the clubs, but also to the individual representatives, who develop leadership, parliamentary procedure, and communication skills through interaction with the other members of the council, faculty and administration. For more information on the SEC, please contact the Office of the Dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences and Technology at (559) 278-2061. Ag Ambassadors (Web Page) What better way is there to recruit students to the College of Agriculture Science and Technology than personal contact? Ag Ambassadors are Fresno State students with majors in the college, who travel to various high schools and junior colleges to talk one to one with students about the CAST programs. They also follow up with each interested student by mailing them information, making a personal phone call, or sending them e-mail to keep in touch.
