The main intention of this homepage is to present interesting links of scientific and computational interest not only for scientists along with an evaluation of the presented sites and - if necessary - a few remarks about the contents. GENERAL RELATIVITY - a primer
Gravity and Time.
Consider three clocks. Clocks 1 and 2 are mounted on a rotating disk, with clock 1 exactly at the centre, and clock 2 fixed on the rim, and clock 3 is sitting at rest with respect to the centre of the disk. Note that the disk exerts a force on clock 2 which forces it to follow a circular path; since, without this force, clock 2 would move in a straight line, it is clear that the force and the resultant acceleration are both directed towards the centre of the disk. Clocks 1 and 3 are not moving relative to one another (there is some rotation involved, but their relative position in space does not change with time); thus, as far as Special Relativity is concerned, they keep the same time. However, clock 2 is moving with respect to clock 3; thus clock 2 is running slow as seen by clock 3. Since clocks 1 and 3 keep the same time, this means that clock 2 runs slow compared to clock 1, even though clocks 1 and 2 have no relative translatory motion. (Note that, since clock 2 is not in an inertial frame, Special Relativity does not make any statement about its timekeeping - this is a new effect) . Finally, consider a clock situated on the disk somewhere between clocks 1 and 2; the acceleration of such a clock is less than that of clock 2, and since it is also moving more slowly than clock 2, it is running less slowly.

Planet Neptune
Neptune is currently the most distant planet from the Sun, with an orbital radius of 30 Astronomical Units and an orbital period of 165 years. Its diameter is about four times that of the Earth, which makes it the 4th largest planet. It is slightly smaller than Uranus, but its density is 1.6 g/cc (compared with 1.2 g/cc for Uranus), which makes it the 3rd most massive planet. The relatively low density indicates large concentrations of hydrogen and helium, but Uranus and Neptune both have much larger concentrations of heavier elements than Jupiter and Saturn. As for all the gas giant planets, models suggest rocky cores of maybe 15 Earth masses, but there is no direct confirmation of this. The bluish color of the adjacent image is, as for Uranus, because of methane in the atmosphere, which absorbs red light, leaving the light scattered from Neptune preferentially enhanced at blue wavelengths. The period of rotation is about 16 hours, comparable to that of Uranus and much slower than for Jupiter and Saturn. The temperatures at the cloud tops are about -216 degrees Celsius, slightly warmer than for Uranus. Neptune, like Jupiter and Saturn but unlike Uranus, has an internal heat source and produces 2.7 times more heat than it absorbs. Next Back Top Home Help

Einstein's General Theory of Relativity The General Theory of Relativity is an expansion of the Special Theory to include gravity as a property of space. This results in setting the speed of light as the absolute speed limit in the Universe and also produced the famous relationship between mass and energy, E = mc . The foundation of Einstein's General Theory is the Equivalence Principle which states the equivalence between inertial mass and gravitational mass Inertial Mass is the quantity that determines how difficult it is to alter the motion of an object. It is the mass in Newton's Second Law: F = ma Gravitational mass is the mass which determines how strongly two objects attract each other by gravity, e.g. the attraction of the earth: It is the apparent equivalence of these two types of mass which results in the uniformity of gravitational acceleration Galileo's result that all objects fall at the same rate independent of mass: Galileo and Newton accepted this as a happy coincidence, but Einstein turned it into a fundamental principle. Another way of stating the equivalence principle is that gravitational acceleration is indistinguishable from other forms of acceleration. The terrestrial planets in the solar system are the earth Mercury Venus , and Mars Pluto is sometimes also classified as a terrestrial planet. These planets are approximately the same size, with the earth the largest. They are considerably denser than the Jovian planets , ranging from a specific gravity of 4 for Mars to 5.5 for the earth. Because they spin less rapidly than the Jovian planets, the terrestrial planets are less flattened at their poles.

Principle of Equivalence
Experiments performed in a uniformly accelerating reference frame with acceleration a are indistinguishable from the same experiments performed in a non-accelerating reference frame which is situated in a gravitational field where the acceleration of gravity = g = -a = intensity of gravity field. One way of stating this fundamental principle of general relativity is to say that gravitational mass is identical to inertial mass. One of the implications of the principle of equivalence is that since photons have momentum and therefore must be attributed an inertial mass, they must also have a gravitational mass. Thus photons should be deflected by gravity . They should also be impeded in their escape from a gravity field, leading to the gravitational red shift and the concept of a black hole .
