The Battle of the Little Big Horn (June 25, 1876)
The Battle of the Little Big Horn was the Indians' greatest victory and the army's worst defeat in the long and bloody Plains Indian War. The Indians were not allowed to revel in the victory for long, however. The massacre of Custer and his 7th Cavalry outraged many Americans and only confirmed the image of the bloodthirsty Indians in their minds, and the government became more determined to destroy or tame the hostile Indians. The army redoubled its efforts and drove home the war with a vengeful fury. Within five years, almost all of the Sioux and Cheyenne would be confined to reservations and both Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse had been killed by their enemies.

TALES OUT OF SCHOOL
October 1993
THE HISTORIC INDIANS OF KANSAS Michael J. Marchand To study the tribal peoples who lived on and traveled over the land we call Kansas, is to partake in an intellectually expanding adventure which works to erode the possibility of seeing American myths as singular verity. To investigate the history of peoples diverse and distinctive can be entertaining and it can be a moral enterprise. It is to see the images before us as something more, something richer. It can throw a new light upon the background of our mirrored reflections. It is a path to questions and a steadfast means for dismantling premature conclusions about what and where we are. This edition of Tales Out of School invites educators to take students on journeys into the past, to think about the people who stood, and stand, on the banks of the Cimarron, Arkansas, Smoky Hill, Kansas and Republican rivers.

Foreword
Foreword The image of Lieutenant Colonel George A. Custer and his doomed 7th Cavalry making their "last stand" at the Battle of the Little Bighorn has been etched indelibly on the American consciousness. Yet Custer's last stand was only a small part of a series of wars against the Sioux Indian tribes in the latter half of the nineteenth century. Except for the efforts of a small group of frontier historians and a large number of Western buffs, serious military study of these campaigns has been neglected. The West Point series of atlases, recognized by many as the standard cartographic work on America's campaigns, does not address the Indian wars. Therefore, this atlas represents a modest effort to rectify that omission by examining the Army's campaigns against the Sioux, one of the great Indian tribes of the American West.
