The Silk Road Ensemble: Portraits and Places photography installation appears at select Silk Road Ensemble Performances. It was created with the purpose of helping concert audiences develop a deeper understanding of the extraordinary lives and personal philosophies of fifteen members of the Silk Road Ensemble. Portraits of the artists, snapshots from their private collections, quotes, personal stories and short biographies offer a window into the rich and varied lives of these artists, while giving concert-goers an opportunity to examine the instruments of the Silk Road up close. The portraits were shot by acclaimed photographer Cylla von Tiedemann in New York in August 2001 at the Silk Road Ensemble recording session. Von Tiedemann is a well-recognized performing arts photographer in Canada, and is the principal photographer of the National Ballet of Canada and numerous other presenting organizations. The installation was designed by Real Design, an experienced design team which is responsible for the comprehensive identity system for the Silk Road Project, and the Guggenheim Museums in New York, Berlin, Bilbao, Venice and Las Vegas.

This web site was launched in March of 1998 and since then I have received numerous responses from visitors all around the world. I appreciate your interest in my work and sensitivity revealed from your letters. Many of you asked about my background and my thoughts on photography. I hope this response will help you to understand my work and philosophy behind it. I was born in 1946, the first year after the World War II. My parents just survived hardships of evacuation and returned back home to Riga, then under Soviet occupation. I grew up among Russian speaking population of Latvia, and Russian culture become my root culture. I graduated from the technical college as aviation engineer but never worked as such, instead I joined Riga Motion Studios as a designer of equipment for special effects. I was in my early twenties and mostly ignorant about art. At this time social realism was an official culture of the country and I did not care about it too much. Information about modern western art was hardly available and my knowledge of it was highly limited.
