NAIROBI
What once was a remote railway outpost has become the largest city between Johannesburg and Cairo and is Kenya's capital city and the world's safari capital. It has long been the commercial centre of Eastern Africa and one of the world's cross-roads with its' international airport servicing most of the world's airlines. Nairobi has a population of over 2 million people with all the main religious demoninations being represented.
Nairobi came into existence with the building of the Kenya-Uganda Railway in 1899 and it has grown into a very modern, cosmopolitan, lively, interesting and pleasantly landscaped city. You'll meet travellers from all over the world here. If you've travelled through Africa from the West you will be refreshed with the ease of getting bureaucratic matters sorted out, good bookshops, restaurants, efficient banks, efficient telecommunications systems, a place where you can get things done with the minimum amount of fuss in a timely fashion. However, the downside is the security , in recent years there has been an increase in robberies and muggings, you just have be extra cautious.

[Text Version] Unit Plan for A Regional Community from Another Part of the World Curriculum Unit Plan Social Studies Third Grade Regional Communities Unit 6: A Regional Community from Another Part of the World Abstract In this unit students study Shiga Prefecture in Japan. Shiga was chosen because of its longtime connections to Michigan and the large number of cities in Shiga with sister cities in Michigan. Any other Japanese prefecture could be used for the unit as well as an equivalent from another country such as a Swiss canton, Canadian province, or Brazilian state. The unit begins with a brief study of Japan in general. In the first activity students read several Haiku poems and from them make inferences about the geography of Japan (e.g., snowy winters, blossoming spring trees, mountain areas). They then explore maps, photos, Web sites, and other sources to test their impressions and gather more information about the geography of the country. Next, by reading and discussing This Place is Crowded or a similar book, they explore how the people of Japan have adapted to and modified their environment.

Help var content = "This will be a tool tip"; createTTLayer("TTMSGBox",0,0,320,44,false,content); moveTTLayer("TTMSGBox",0,0); Home Geographic descriptions of the earth constitute our earliest science and ancient maps predate any discovered written language. It appears that mankind has always wanted to illustrate its environment. The earliest maps known today date back beyond 6,000 BC. It was nearly 4,000 years later before geometry was introduced to map making and measuring the Earth. Another 2,000 years passed before the mathematics of depicting a spherical world on a flat sheet of paper were developed. Greek astronomer and geographer Claudius Ptolemy developed the first maps depicting a spherical world around 200 A.D. Yet it wasn't until the fifteenth century before Ptolemy's maps were widely published and used by navigators, including Columbus, Vespucci, Magellan, and Drake. Of course the American continents did not appear on Ptolemy's maps. In fact it was his maps' exaggeration of the size of Asia that misled Columbus into underestimating the distance to the Orient. The new world that Columbus encountered was first added to a world map in 1507. At the close of that century, Flemish geographer Gerardus Mercator published the first bound collection of scientific maps. His work featured an illustration of the mythological giant Atlas. Since its publication in Duisburg, a collection of maps has come to be known as an Atlas.

Much of that context no longer exists on land, as development and growth have ridden roughshod over the past. The maps on this site cover the early modern period ending in 1850, just as so-called internal improvements (canals, highways, and railroads) began to cross the young nation and change the landscape. These early maps provide contemporary documentation of particular times and places and present a compelling way to study history today. Belgium is one of the founding members of the European Community, and its capital, Brussels, is also the capital of the European Union . It is a federal state , with 3 relatively autonomous regions: Flanders in the north, where the language is Dutch ("Flemish"), Wallonia in the south, where the language is French, and the centrally located Brussels , which is officially bilingual. Belgium's rich history has left impressive churches, town halls, castles and works of art, dating back to the early Middle Ages, spread around the cities and country-side. Belgium has possibly the highest "quality of life" in the world, as testified by its excellent food , housing, health care, education and infrastructure, its world records for high productivity and low poverty, and the appreciation of foreigners residing in Belgium.
