Our east-oriented maps of the Holy Land are consistent both with the biblical data and with the way people in the land oriented themselves geographically throughout their history. Our four directions of the compass (north, south, east, west) are terms foreign to ancient culture. The Bible refers to the north as saphon, which means "toward the hidden region," to the south as negeb, the region of the Negev, to the west as 'am ("sea"), referring to the Mediterranean Sea, and to the east as qedem, "the region in front." Each of these four terms occurs in Gen 13:14-15 in the record of Yahweh's promise of the land to Abraham and his descendants. The Bible refers to the east as the direction where the sun rises and to the west to where the sun sets (Ps 103:12). The south is also called the "region of the right hand" and the north "the region of the left hand." Jacob named the last of his twelve children Benjamin, "son of the right hand" or "son of the south." Benjamin was born near Ephrath (Bethlehem) in the south in contrast to his other eleven sons who were born in the north (Gen 35:16-18). This east-orientation perspective continued even after the biblical period. BC to the 4th cent AD Most of Nubia was converted to Coptic Christianity in the 6th cent., but by the 15th cent. Islam prevailed. In 1821 the north was conquered by Egypt, but a revolt by the nationalist Mahdi in 1881 forced an Egyptian withdrawal. Muhammad Gaafar al-Nimeiry ended the war by granting the south a measure of autonomy. However, his imposition of Islamic law on the entire country in 1983 reopened the conflict, and close to 2 million have died since, many from starvation. Nimeiry was deposed by a military coup in 1986. A short-lived civilian government was overthrown in 1989 by Lt. Gen. Omar Hassan al-Bashir; he officially became president in 1993 and was elected to the post in 1996. Bashir's government reinstituted Islamic law, banned opposition parties, and jailed dissidents. Throughout the 1990s the army mounted offensives against the rebels in S Sudan; several cease-fires were announced to allow the distribution of food to famine victims, but they did not hold. In recent years Sudan has supported Muslim fundamentalists internationally.

All of them are native to the New World and are concentrated in four regions in Brazil and Central America. All the Manihot species so far examined have 2n = 36 chromosomes. Interspecific hybrids between cassava and its wild relatives show relatively normal meiosis, and further generations can be obtained. Electrophoresis shows affinity among wild species of different sections, and between some of them and cassava. Both polyploidy and apomixis may have contributed to speciation in this genus. Polyploidy produced genetic variability, while apomixis is responsible for perpetuating new hybrid types adapted to different environments.
