    Locating Unfamiliar Place Names
    If you need to locate an unfamiliar place name, you will find a wide range of gazetteers and atlases containing indexes of place names in the T.R. Smith Map Collection. The staff on duty will be glad to recommend the best place-name index for your purpose. They can also help you to locate the place on a map.
    Outside our open hours you will find atlases in the reference areas of Anschutz, Watson and Spencer Libraries. Alternatively, there are gazetteers for both American and foreign place names at the U.S. Geological Survey's website at http://geonames.usgs.gov/
    Finding Paper Sheet Maps
    We recommend that you start with an online search but that you also visit or contact the T.R. Smith Map Collection to find out about maps not yet listed in the online catalog. Individual maps and map series listed in the KU Libraries online catalog include most of our recent maps published by U.S. government agencies and a smaller percentage of our holdings of maps from other American and foreign sources. Older maps are being added to the online catalog as our transition from card catalog to online catalog progresses.

      Gazetteers
      This section covers all gazetteers (both Australian and international) held in the Map Collection, or available in digital format. Gazetteers on CD-ROM or diskette may be obtained from the information and / or loans desk on presentation of Monash University ID. These may then be used on a standalone PC. Some gazetteers available for loan. Most gazetteers are catalogued and are housed in various locations. A number may be found in the various branches of Monash University Library. Gazetteers can generally be found using the catalogue . Try using the country and gazetteer? or name? as search terms in the title field, eg korea name?     Map Collection
    The Map Collection is housed in the Maps/Data/GIS unit on the Seventh Floor, Southeast corner of the Library. The collection contains cartographic materials to serve the diverse needs of the University community. It includes atlases, maps, digital maps, air photos and gazetteers. Except for air photos, all are listed in the Library Computer Catalogue (see Finding Maps and Atlases at SFU Library for tips on using the catalogue to find cartographic materials).

    This bibliography emphasizes the reference tools in the John C. Pace Library that are concerned with the history of cartography and that help the researcher to locate and identify a particular map. The atlases presented in this bibliography may be found, along with hundreds of other contemporary atlases, in the atlas collection at the end of the Government Documents section on the first floor.
