PITCAIRN ISLANDS STUDY GROUP APS Affiliate #46 (Organized 1973) Dear Prospective Member: By showing an interest in the Pitcairn Islands Study Group, you have opened yourself up to one of the really unique areas in the philatelic world and we urge you to read on. Pitcaim is a tiny island in the South Pacific Ocean with a population of about 50 people, yet it is the center of interest for some 600+ stamp collectors who are meinbers of PISG. Founded in 1973, PISG was the result of the efforts of Charles Lachman, Marne Groff and Barry Richards. Their goal was to create a group for the study of the stamps, postal history and people of the Pitcaim Islands. During the first year, 70 people enrolled, and since that time, the group has expanded to over 600 members worldwide. One of the reasons for the worldwide appeal of Pitcairn philately is the romance associated with the descendants of the HMAV Bounty mutiny. One finds much of the history of the Pitcaim people depicted on the limited stamp issues that number just a few over 500 since they were first issued in 1940. A Directory of Wetlands in Oceania Area: 43 sq.km. Population: 66 in January 1992. The Pitcairn Islands are a group of four small islands situated between latitudes 23° and 26° South and longitudes 124° and 131° West in the South Pacific, about 2,000 km southeast of Tahiti and 1,900 km west of Easter Island. The group comprises Pitcairn Island (25°04'S, 130°06'W) and three uninhabited islands: Oeno (120 km northwest of Pitcairn), Henderson (200 km east-northeast of Pitcairn) and Ducie (472 km east of Pitcairn). Pitcairn itself is a high volcanic island of 450 ha with lava cliffs and rugged hills rising to a peak at 335 m. Henderson, the largest island in the group with an area of 3,700 ha, is a raised limestone atoll which rises to 33 m. Oeno (65 ha) and Ducie (70 ha) are both low coral atolls with maximum elevations of about 4 metres. The climate is subtropical, with an average annual rainfall of about 2,000 mm spread evenly throughout the year. Henderson is somewhat drier than Pitcairn, with 1,620 mm of rainfall in 1991/92 compared with 2,170 mm on Pitcairn in the same period. Mean monthly temperatures range from 24°C in January to 19°C in July. The Southeast Trades predominate. The Pitcairn Islands are a British Crown Colony, with the British High Commissioner to New Zealand holding the position of Governor. Most of the 66 inhabitants are direct descendants of the mutineers from H.M.S. Bounty and their Polynesian consorts, who reached the islands in 1790. In 1856, the 194 inhabitants were moved to Norfolk Island, off the east coast of Australia, but by 1864, 43 of the islanders had returned, and Pitcairn has been permanently settled since then. The local economy is based on subsistence agriculture, the fertile volcanic soils of Pitcairn producing a wide variety of tropical and subtropical crops. Some fruit, vegetables and handicrafts are sold to passing ships running between New Zealand and Panama. What is clear, however, is that they were great sailors and navigators who traversed vast distances of open ocean to settle as far and wide as present-day French Polynesia, Hawaii, New Zealand, parts of the New Guinea island, Tonga and the Cook Islands. It's thought that they left southeast Asia around 3000 or 4000 years ago and began to arrive in present-day French Polynesia around 300 AD. Islands were originally ruled by chieftains who commanded huge fleets of outrigger canoes; religious practices at this time included human sacrifices. Some of the first European visitors, among them Samuel Wallis (1767), Louis-Antoine de Bougainville (1768) and James Cook (1769), returned with stories of a paradise on earth inhabited by 'noble savages' and Venus-like women whose sexual favours were freely offered to the visitors. Europe was abuzz with stories of a tropical haven of free love after Bougainville returned to Paris, and this myth attracted the likes of Herman Melville, Robert Louis Stevenson and Paul Gauguin. The most famous event in the region's recent history was the mutiny on the Bounty. It was on Tahiti and the Austral island of Tubuai that Fletcher Christian and his mutineers sought refuge after setting William Bligh and his faithful crew members adrift in a tiny open boat near the Tongan islands on 28 April 1789. And, ultimately, it was on Tahiti that the long arm of British law rounded up those mutineers who hadn't escaped to Pitcairn Island, and made them face British justice.

"Local government" is via an elected Island Magistrate and Island Council. Until recently, there was little consideration of conservation in the Pitcairn Islands. In recent years, however, the Pitcairners have become increasingly aware of the need for conservation on their own island, and the publicity generated by the inclusion of Henderson Island in the World Heritage Convention has helped bring this about. Being such a small community there is little need for legislation on conservation: it is an attitude brought about by caring rather than being told to care. International Activities The United Kingdom ratified the Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage (World Heritage Convention) on 29 May 1984 and Henderson Island was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1988.
