Welcome to Norfolk Island's Home on the Web Norfolk Island is but a speck on the surrounding two million empty square miles of seascape. In the South Pacific Ocean, this three by five mile volcanic outcrop is a subtropical paradise - but a paradise which has known inhuman brutality. Discovered by Captain James Cook, it was claimed by him for Great Britain and named in honour of the Duchess of Norfolk. Cook's crew were struck by the island's rugged beauty and the abundance of flax and pine. Cook sailed on, and the island was to remain uninhabited for a further 14 years. Since then the island has seen two penal settlements come and go, the second of which was the most brutal ever established by Britain. In 1856 the island received those who call it home to this day - the Pitcairners, descendants of the Bounty Mutineers. During the intervening 140 years these people have nurtured the island to make it a prosperous, tranquil and beautiful place. Thousands of people from all over the world now come to experience the history, beauty and unique Pitcairn culture that make Norfolk Island a paradise on Earth. However, paradise is threatened...

The Pitcairns are one of the most isolated settlements in the world. They lie midway between New Zealand and Peru and were settled famously after the mutiny on the Bounty in 1789. (Photo tour here .) The primary family on Pitcairn is still the Christian family, who claim to be descended from Fletcher Christian. The islands are officially a British colony, but as far as the settlers and their descendants are concerned, they are an independent and self-governing nation . So the three-and-a-half year criminal investigation and subsequent trial of several Pitcairn men for indecent assault and rape has opened up serious issues for the residents and the British Crown. Thirteen men four in New Zealand, seven on Pitcairn and two in Australia faced trial for raping underage girls as far back as forty years ago. The island had no courthouse, no jail, and no accommodation for the legal staff required for the trial. The men being tried helped to build their prison. But in the wake of this discussion on MoFi recently (and this comment ) the question of cultural and moral relativism seemed interesting. Several times, the accused men stated that their behaviour was perfectly acceptable on the island. Regardless of their sovereignty, is it reasonable?

Each of these islands is an incredible destination but together they make for the voyage of a lifetime and memories that will last forever. We start this part of the journey at Easter Island, the land of the lost civilisation of the Rapa Nui with its mysterious giant stone 'Moai' heads. Easter Island, lies 2,100 miles west of the South American coast. Depending on the inbound flight schedules you will have 2-3 days exploring ashore prior to joining the ship to commencing your voyage.
1,300 miles or 12-13 days sailing from Easter Island we navigate to a tiny speck in the South Pacific. The coordinates are 25 04 S, 130 06 W - Pitcairn Island, the last hideaway of the Bounty mutineers. What has helped to perpetuate the romantic fascination with the mutiny is the existence of a small community on Pitcairn Island directly descended from the mutineers and their Tahitian wives.
Voyage starts Easter Island Friday 29 April, 2005

Save up to 85% on cheap airline tickets plus great discounts on hotels and car rentals too! Great deals on last minute specials, wholesale, consolidator, and air courier airfare. Although they were last to be discovered, Australia and the Pacific islands were a fine addition to planet Earth. Quick Travel Tip! EUROPEAN MONEY CONVERSION IN A NUTSHELL
Convert your money there, not here, for savings. And don't change twice - don't convert your Italian lira back to $US, and then convert your $US into French francs. You'll pay transaction fees each time you change and lose a percentage of your bank. Australia has a very diverse climate. Dry deserts, almost tropcial rainforest and a temperate climate. This makes that when it comes to natural beauty, Australia is definitely worth seeing. And although most of the cities are young, they are attractive places to be.

What's with the "three cheers for empire" bit?

On Wednesday the mayor of the island, Steve Christian, pleaded not guilty to sex abuse charges. I'd say that's the Bounty legacy indeed, "Christian," a very old name on Pitcairn. I guess ol' Fletcher wasn't so bad though, his feeling for Maimiti, in large part, convinced him to take the ship. They were, unquestionably, the most monogamous couple on Pitcairn. Jesus, though, white people sure know how to ruin an island. posted by Shane at 3:23 AM PST on October 1 Sarcasm. By Phil Mercer
BBC, Sydney
Some of the island's women have spoken out in defence of the men Some women on the British Pacific colony of Pitcairn have criticised sex abuse trials due to get under way on the remote island on Wednesday.
Seven men, or half the adult male population of the tiny community, are facing more than 50 charges. At a public meeting on Pitcairn, female residents claimed it was customary for girls on the island to have sex as young as 12. Some alleged victims of abuse had been coerced into testifying, they said. The accused include the island's mayor, Steve Christian, and his son Randy. Also facing charges are Len Brown, his son Dave, Jay Warren, Terry Young and Dennis Christian. Many of the women of Pitcairn, one of the world's most remote communities, believe that the charges against the seven are unfair.

      AP , SYDNEY
Tuesday, Oct 26, 2004,Page 5 Advertising Six men were convicted of a string of sex attacks on the remote Pacific island of Pitcairn, British authorities said yesterday, following trials that exposed a culture of sexual abuse on the tiny home of descendants of the 18th-century Bounty mutineers. Among those convicted was Pitcairn Island Mayor Steve Christian, who claims to be a direct descendant of mutiny leader Fletcher Christian. He was cleared of four indecent assaults and one rape but convicted of five other rapes, Bryan Nicolson of the British High Commission in Wellington, New Zealand, said. The verdicts were read out by judges sent to the island from New Zealand who sat in makeshift courts in the Pitcairn community hall for the trials, which started on Sept. 30. Sentences were expected to be announced later this week.
