, captained by James Macrae, stayed to engage Captain England’s force. A fierce battle raged for several hours and even when both the Cassandra Fancy ran a ground, they continued to fire upon one another relentlessly, until Captain Macrae, struck his colours.
Leaving behind a cargo worth £75,000, Captain Macrae fled to the shore. The Cassandra had thirty-seven casualties while Captain England’s force had lost more than ninety. After ten days of hiding, Captain Macrae went aboard, the Victory , hoping for mercy. Captain Taylor wanted to kill him but Captain England wanted to spare his life. After several shots of Rum Captain Taylor agreed not only in the granting of quarter, but also with awarding Captain Macrae the badly damaged

Of The Caribbean Throughout history pirates have terrorized the world's seas. The 1600's and early 1700's were known as the Golden Age of Piracy.
Ships loaded with goods such as gold, tobacco, silks and spices, would be sailing back to Europe. Pirates could not resist the temptation to rob these ships.
True Pirates True pirates stole from anyone. They were criminals and if caught, faced certain death. Most British pirates were hanged. Their bodies were then chained by the River Thames as a warning.
Buccaneers During the 1600's, a group of runaway men (slaves), criminals and refugees were living in the Caribbean. Mainly Dutch, English and French, they hated the Spanish, who ruled much of the Caribbean at that time. They enjoyed attacking the Spanish ships and did so whenever they could. The most clever cutthroat of all, this buccaneer Capt. Henry Morgan who would pilfer his own men. Morgan was born about 1635 in Glamorganshire Wales. History has it that Morgan was the nephew of Colonel Edward Morgan who looted and captured St. Euststius and Saba Island. These two islands are just south of the US Virgin Islands and west of St. Martin. Both islands are small.

PIRATES:
"Piracy" in international law, is the crime of robbery, or other act of violence for private ends, on the high seas or in the air above the seas, committed by the captain or crew of a ship or aircraft outside the normal jurisdiction of any nation, and without authority from any government. The persons who engage in acts of piracy are called "pirates". International treaties and national legislation have sometimes applied the term "piracy" to attacks on the high seas authorized by a government, in violation of international law; to actions by insurgents acting for political purposes; or to violent acts on board a vessel under control of its officers. Such acts, however, are not regarded as piracy under the law of nations. Piracy is distinguished from "privateering" in that the latter is authorized by a belligerent in time of war; privateering was legally abolished by the Declaration of Paris of 1856, but the United States and certain other nations did not assent to the declaration. Piracy is recognized as an offense against the law of nations. It is a crime not against any particular state, but against all humanity. The crime may be punished in the competent tribunal of any country in which the offender may be found, or carried, although the crime may have been committed on board a foreign vessel on the high seas. The essence of piracy is that the pirate has no valid commission from a sovereign state, or from an insurgent or belligerent government engaged in hostilities with a particular state. Pirates are regarded as common enemies of all people. In that nations have an equal interest in their apprehension and punishment, pirates may be lawfully captured on the high seas by the armed vessels of any state and brought within its territorial jurisdiction for trial in its tribunals.
