Photograph Your Art ... Printer Friendly Version September 2003 Pinhole Photography by: Diane Dobson Barton You may have heard of pinhole photography, but what is it? You know it is a form of photography, but what is it exactly? Simply put, pinhole photography is a unique method of taking pictures, with a camera that has no lens. It is not a new art form, but it has recently gone through a renewed popularity. This renewed interest is due in part to the backlash to the onslaught of digital photography and art forms. As with digital photography, a pinhole camera can help bring your creativity alive. But with pinhole photography you can design and build the camera itself, creating an element of control that gives it a unique twist. Once the basic concept of a pinhole is understood, and you are able to create a workable camera and entire new world of possibilities are opened. And your only real limitation is your own imagination. If you have never tried pinhole photography and would like to know what it is, or if you have and would like to know more about the process, this article is written with you in mind.

We Make Pinhole Photography Easy The Lensless Camera Manufacturing Company is proud to offer you a line of hand crafted, made in America, pinhole cameras in various film sizes and focal lengths . Our standard cameras are made from 1/2" 9 laminate birch (walnut stained with polyurethane finish) and have vertical and horizontal tripod mounts. Special order cameras are available in Mahogany and custom formats. Hardwood cameras are subject to market prices. A unique feature of pinhole cameras is that depth of field is of no concern sample photos. ; everything in front of the camera is equally in focus. This was the reason that Ansel Adams used this type of camera for many of his nature shots. You can get countless different effects by bending the film, putting it in diagonally, or by wadding up the negative. Our unique camera designs make it possible to use cut film holders or Polaroid backs such as those used with lensed cameras, thus eliminating the need to load the camera in the darkroom. Of course if you prefer, you can still load the film in the darkroom the traditional way by using the back that comes with the camera.

*A square card laying on the ground was included in the photograph. By extruding the sides of the card on the image a floor-grid was created.
What are the characteristics of Pinhole Photography?
Infinite depth of field: foreground and background look equally (un)sharp.
No image distortion: the light rays are not bent by a lens so straight lines remain straight. Distortion effects an be introduced by curling the film or paper inside the "camera".
Due to the long exposure times, moving objects (trees, water, traffic, passers-by) either blur or disappear .
"Cameras" can be made from almost any light-tight containers.
This is photography in its simplest form.

You might have made one in science class. Punch a hole in an oatmeal cereal can, put film inside, uncover the hole momentarily, and then develop the film. Pinholes have been in use a long time, originating as perspective viewing devices as far back as 1425 by Filippo Brunelleschi. Camera obscuras, based on the pinhole principle, were built - one example exists in Edinburgh, Scotland in a tower on the Royal Mile below the Castle. Some of the first pinhole photographs were made by Sir David Brewster in 1859. By the early 1900s, pinhole photographs were again relegated to the dustbin of history, with lensed cameras overtaking the pinhole in convenience and speed. Kodak briefly made a commercial pinhole camera in the 1940s. Pinhole photography today remains primarily an artistic medium enjoyed by a dedicated group of photographers, and several web sites provide rich information on pinhole photography techniques.

Theories of pinhole-derived images are found in the writings of ancient savants like Aristotle, Chinese philosopher Mo Ti, and Arabian mathematician Ibn al-Haytham (Alhazen). Later, artists like Leonardo da Vinci, Canaletto, Dürer and Vermeer used camera obscuras as aids in experimenting with images.
