Stephen Salniker created our ninth Photo Gallery with a whole new perspective. He uses a camera with no lens, as primitive, yet evocative as the earlies photos ever taken in the mid 1800s. He started doing pinhole work at age 15 because he did not have an enlarger. He found, after reading an article in Popular Photography, that he could get a large image by building his own camera and using enlarging paper in place of film. That gave him a paper negative, which he then contact printed to make a positive image. Almost three decades later, Steve continues to make pinhole images. Today he has an enlarger, but still prefers working with large-format negatives. He currently has four cameras that he uses regularly. He prefers "palladium" printing techniques for making black and white prints because he says he gets a wider range of tones in the finished print. The color images here were scanned from 8" x 10" color positives, that came directly out one of Steve's many pinhole cameras. Steve used the back end of an old view camera that he built into a pinhole camera using a cardboard front. The black and white images came from 8" x 10" negatives that were shot in a hand-made Masonite camera. Steve notes that anyone can make a pinhole camera from virtually any object that is light-tight from a Quaker oatmeal box to a shoe box. One artist even made a pinhole camera from a Volkswagen bus, he says. Taking a Polaroid camera, removing the lens, and replacing it with a pinhole is great way to make instant pinhole pictures.

STEVE SALNIKER
And now for something completely different. With all those spiffy digital cameras available, why would someone take photos using a wooden box with a hole in it? Don't knock it until you've tried it. The primitive art of pinhole photography is making a compeback as a simple, satisfyiny art in a complex age. STEVE SALNIKER

A photo taken with a Lenox Laser 300 micron Photo Pinhole at 70mm (f/233),
mounted on a folding 6x6 camera . The scanned frame size is 54mm x 54mm.
The nearest, 31mm high chess piece was only about 85mm from the camera,
which is why it looks slightly soft although not yet disturbingly out of focus.
The far edge of the chess board was about 27cm from the camera. Nice DOF.

But Why? Why would anyone in their right mind start taking pinhole photographs which can never be really sharp, at least when taken with a reasonably sized camera? There is no single answer, different people do have their different reasons. Pinhole photography is great fun and it can be the most serious kind of photography. There is the freedom from vying for the latest and the greatest the industry has to offer, and the freedom from the delusion that technically ever more perfect equipment is required for great photography. There is also the satisfaction of still being able to use one's own creativity and craftmanship to the full, of designing and even building cameras which may be quite unique and individual, an essential part of the art. Pinhole photography is done with very simple cameras which instead of a lens have just a tiny hole or sometimes several of them through which light passes to the film. There are no adjustments to be made, usually there is no viewfinder, and the shutter may be fully manual.

Pinhole Photography Home Albums Photography Software ... Theme A friend introduced me to the concept of pinhole photography. It sounded interesting so I searched around on google and what I found was pretty amazing. What sounded like just a neat trick actually has a huge following. The basic idea is that if you take a picture through a small enough hole you (a) don't need a complex lense, and (b) get a pretty much infinite depth of field. Some people do this using SLRs with a modified body cap but it sounds like the real fun/experience comes from building your own camera and developing the photos yourself.
My Cameras
  • My first attempt at pinhole was using a modified body cap on my Maxxum 7000 and 35mm print film. It worked ok but seems like cheating. I'd like to build my own camera and make my own prints... Wooden box camera that takes 4x6 photo paper

Great for introducing children to photography, it's easy and you can do the film loading, developing and printing under an amber safelight.
Plus it has a quality that's unique. Not bad, for a simple box with a hole in one end..
    With a cardboard box,
a pinhole, sunlight or preferably a bright cloudy sky, a subject that can keep still for a minute or more, and some 5" X 7" photographic paper..
Me with the clock that doesn't work, counting 90 seconds.. ("onethousandandone.. onethousandandtwo.. onethousandandthree.. etc..")
and that's Bob Algie the builder on the ladder in the background.
He got tired of standing still, and went back to his hammering..
