Photography with a Pinhole Camera
Robert Alber
Back to Basics
Taking pictures with a pinhole camera is one of the simplest forms of the photographic process. But wonderfully, making and using a pinhole camera provides the student with an understanding and appreciation for not only photography, but human physiology, chemistry, light physics, mathematics, art and possibly, a little magic. All cameras, from the most sophisticated to the pinhole, rely on the same elementary principles, performing in similar fashion to the human eye .Like your eyes, the camera needs light to operate. Light moves into the eye through the pupil a hole that is made smaller or larger by the iris Light gets into the camera through a hole called an aperture that is made larger or smaller by a diaphragm . The camera can also shut out all light with a shutter , similar to closing your eyelids, or opening them to let the light pass. Recall what happens when you enter a movie theater on a sunny afternoon. It takes some time for your eyes to adjust to the low light. At first you cannot see anything, but soon you began to make out objects and within a short time you can see pretty well, even in that darkened room. This is much like a camera making a long exposure in low light. The diaphragm opens as wide as it can to allow maximum illumination. For your eyes, the iris opens wide. The eye's

When using a homemade camera that has no lens, lightmeter, automatic shutter, etc. the photographer can really get inside the process of the image creation itself, and develop an almost tactile sense of what is going on inside the camera while the image is being made.
I use several cameras for black and white photography, each has its own characteristics. One camera has three pinholes that project an overlapping image on to the film (photo paper actually) which is wrapped around a cylindrical film holder. Another two cameras are made of high fired stoneware. One was made from a metal can. There is a separate page that has details about my cameras
I also do a bit of colour pinhole photography, and a colour image has been included.

I use several very different cameras for my pinhole camera photography. Some of the black and white photos are made with an odd homemade camera that has three shutters and a curved film plane. Each shutter points in a different direction and the images overlap on the film. I wanted to have a camera that would create a radically different type of image from our usual perspective, to open up new creative possibilities, and to make the most of the inherent characteristics of a pinhole camera. A flat plane film holder can also be inserted behind the middle shutter to make more conventional images with the side shutters closed.
I also use a ceramic camera. It's basically a lidded, wheel thrown pot that has been cut in half. The film is on the circular inner wall of the pot. Being curved, the film gets a wide angle view through the pinhole.
The third camera I use for black and white work is a simple can with a pinhole pierced through one side.
The colour photos are made with an old Nikon F2 camera body that has been adapted for taking pinhole photos. The lens has been taken off and extension rings are put in its place with a pinhole disk at the front end.
The film used in the black and white cameras is actually a 5 x 8 inch piece of photo paper. This makes a large negative that is scanned and inverted into a positive image. Black and white photo paper is not designed to be used this way, so its response to coloured light adds another unusual dimension to the image. The colour images are made with regular 35 mm colour negative film.

    The camera.
amera. Our camera is an imported Venetian biscotti tin (Baicoli). The inside is spray-painted matte black. A biggish hole was drilled in the center of the lid. A square of heavy aluminum foil (from a disposable cookie sheet) with a pinhole in it is taped over the drilled hole, using electrician's tape. The pinhole is the lens of the camera. The shutter is a piece of the foil paper that film comes in. There are pieces of tape on the shutter to hold it up or down, as appropriate. The film is black-and-white print paper. It is held in place (in principle) by two strips of black cardboard glued to the inside of the camera. Although the lid seemed to fit tightly, it wasn't lightproof (our first pictures were all white). These light leaks are covered by a strip of black felt held on with a strip of elastic. To change the "film", you need either a darkroom or a changing bag. When the film is developed, you get a negative, from which you can make a contact print.

A pinhole camera is the simplest camera there is. It only consists of a light-tight box with a piece of film or photographic paper inside, and a small hole to let light in. Pinhole cameras have very interesting properties that make them very different from cameras with lenses, and should be used accordingly.
    What is a Pinhole Camera?
If you expose a piece of film to light without a lens or pinhole, you don't get an image. This is because every point on the film is reached by light from different directions, so the information in these light rays is mixed in that spot. You have to find a way to map each point on the film to a point in the world, only then you get a picture. This is what a pinhole does: It only lets one single ray of light hit every spot on the film (in theory, anyway), and blocks out all the others. So the light rays paint an image, one ray per point. This is somewhat similar to a camera with a lens (or lens system) that effectively serves the same purpose. But a lens can collect more light, leading to shorter exposure times and much more flexibility.

Many people have emailed me to ask how to get started with pinhole photography. Finally, I have taken the time to put together some instructions. They are at the bottom of the page. First, a comic strip! The first pinhole camera I remember seeing was a Kodak cartridge pinhole camera that a teacher made when I was in first grade.
Click here to see my Cartoon of the Week page
It wasn't until 1994 that I started to make my own, beginning with the film canister camera which took the picture at left. I made a hole in the film canister with a paper punch. I made a pinhole in a piece of heavy foil, then mounted the foil on the canister with electrician's tape in such a way that the pinhole was in the center of the larger punched hole. In a light-tight bag, I cut a three-inch piece of Kodak Ektachrome Elite 100 slide film and put it along the inside of the film canister opposite the pinhole. I put the lid on the film canister, and voila! A camera! The picture at left was exposed for about 15 minutes. I now have several film-can cameras, though I find it inconvenient to try to develop 3-inch strips of film. If you can find an old SLR body (cheapest is best... how 'bout a

I have dabbled in photography since grade school and recently became involved with pinhole photography purely by accident while surfing through Yahoo!'s photography category. I came across pinhole photography and was fascinated by the visceral/surrealistic quality of the photographs and images. M ost people build their own pinhole cameras but you can also buy them as well. The images below were taken with the Robert Rigby 4x5 pinhole camera , Kevin Finney 4x5 Pinhole/Zoneplate camera (pictured above). and a Leica M6 fitted with a Kevin Finney pinhole body cap.
