Pigeons pigeons pigeons
Photo: Auburn University "St Mark’s is like this – rows and rows of pillars with curtains draped in the arches, and glass globules on the tops, looking like pawns, like round domes. The pillars are darkish, grey rather than gleaming white, and the black etchings on them look like they have been drawn with an inky black pen, much like I am using now – oh the funny thing is that upon arrival in London, I found both Em and Lyn had moleskin diaries too, and I was laughing at how similar we are, and how much I love these girls, that they understand this deep desire to write… And at how poseur we are in a sense, wanting to be like Hemmingway, which is of course the great selling pitch of such stationery… And we insist on using black ink pens, but mine is running out! The black looks like it is smudged, pulled downwards.

IV. PIGEONS AND DOVES
  • INTRODUCTION
    Origin

The terms "pigeon" and "dove," especially in languages other than English, are often used interchangeably, with "dove" generally having connotations of grace, gentleness, and religious significance, rather than of speciation. In fact, pigeons and doves are representatives of several distinct genera of the subfamily Columbidae.
Wild pigeons and doves are more or less worldwide in their distribution, with a number of species of each being native to North America. A few species such as the band tailed pigeon ( Columba sasciata ) and the mourning dove ( Sonaida macroura ) are seen in parts of Canada (Goodwin, 1967).
Domesticated pigeons ( Columba livia domestica ) and the common "street pigeons," which are feral derivatives of domestic pigeons, are not indigenous to the Americas, but were first brought to this continent by the French and the English, to Quebec and Nova Scotia respectively, circa 1607.
All today's many varieties of domestic pigeons derive from the rock pigeon (rock dove) of Europe, Asia, and North Africa (Levi, 1969). The domesticated doves (

Wood pigeons in New Zealand are getting drunk on berries and having to be rescued by locals. The birds have taken to eating guava berries after a hard winter killed off much of the forest vegetation that forms their normal diet. The berries ferment and cause intoxication. Reuse/Reprint Related Links Discussion Boards By Whitney Tilson June 18, 2004 Greetings from Molfetta, Italy! Before I get to the main topic of today's column, allow me to tell you about this coastal region on the Adriatic and why I'm here. I'm spending a week in this town in the southeastern part of the country vacationing with my family and teaching a seminar on value investing. This region of Italy, called Puglia, produces most of the country's olive oil and pasta and has a fascinating, ancient history we've visited gorgeous castles and cathedrals that are nearly 1,000 years old. And if you're looking to get off the beaten path, this is it. We have yet to encounter other Americans. While I highly recommend Rome, Florence, and Venice, running into busloads of tourists every five minutes gets old. Our host is Francesco Azzollini, who has established a value-oriented investment fund here the first in Italy, he believes. He taught himself investing by reading all of the classics and sitting in on classes taught at Columbia Business School. He's been applying those lessons with a great deal of success, compounding money at 18% since the fund's inception in 2000. He invests primarily in the same situations as U.S.-based value investors: out-of-favor companies, stubs, post-bankruptcies, etc., that trade on the American stock exchanges (though, not surprisingly, he also dabbles in Europe). It's fascinating and heartening to see that the gospel of Graham, Dodd, Buffett, and Munger has reached this remote corner of Italy.

Anyways, I wanted to learn a bit more and low and behold, The Audubon Society has the entire Birds Of America online! Incredible! Checking out the Passenger Pigeon piece came up with this:
Before sunset I reached Louisville, distant from Hardensburgh fifty-five miles. The Pigeons were still passing in undiminished numbers, and continued to do so for three days in succession. The people were all in arms. The banks of the Ohio were crowded with men and boys, incessantly shooting at the pilgrims, which there flew lower as they passed the river. Multitudes were thus destroyed. For a week or more, the population fed on no other flesh than that of Pigeons, and talked of nothing but Pigeons.

For an expanded look at what happened to the passenger pigeon, and a great many other natural events in our history, I would strongly recommend picking up a copy of Ted Steinberg’s book, "Down to Earth: Nature’s Role in American History." It not a book of enviro-babble, but rather an examination of how nature shaped and was shaped by colonization, the industrial revolution, the Civil War, consumerism, and much more. It’s an easy read, and one I’d recommend to anyone, regardless of their environmental stance.

A place to buy, sell, or talk about birds Hi, my name is Dimitri Tsalabounis. I was born in Thessaloniki, Greece, in 1945, and relocated to the US. in 1969. I lived in Cleveland, Ohio, until 1987, and then relocated to Green Valley, Arizona where I live today. All my life, since I was a little kid, I had more then one hobby, but the most of all, was for me Radios, which I am HAM these days, KD7FMC DM-41.
    And the other was Pigeons
John Liagris . It happens John to live also in Ohio, and that was not a problem to visit him and after so many years I saw again Wutas to do what they know the best, from any other birds even Hawks to dive! John's birds when up, and he let them go out of site, and then put out the droppers, and from the clouds the Wutas where coming down so fast, they were living a long trail of a father dust, like a diving jet plane . I estimate the speed 180 to 200 hundred miles an hour! John Liagris import those birds from Greece, and did so, that more than a dozen times since then. Also, John helped a dozen or more pigeon flyers with Wutas in the US. and still does, he sent me some real good looking birds, and also some direct from Greece.I also bought some few birds from Paul Maywald, which have start Wutas from John Liagris also Now days, John, have two loft's one Wutas, and the other import Donecks from Greece.

    http://mdc.mo.gov/landown/wild/nuisance/pigeons/
COMMON PIGEONS are introduced birds, thought to have ties with the rock dove, or pigeon, of Europe, Asia and Africa. Over much of the United States, especially in urban areas, they are a nuisance. From a biological, pathological, or aesthetic standpoint, pigeons may be objectionable. They harbor diseases communicable to man, and nesting and roosting areas are dirty. Many broods are brought off during the year, with birds nesting from late winter throughout the summer to early winter. They have a long life span.
    Control
Roosts. Measures to eliminate roosting sites seem costly, but the long-term effectiveness justifies the expense. Openings in lofts and towers, behind signs and under eaves can be screened with rust-proof wire of 3/4-inch mesh which also will keep out sparrows and starlings. Roosting on ledges can be discouraged by wire net covering, or by wood or metal sheathing installed at a sharp angle. Sharp wire projectors and electric wire devices are available commercially to protect ledges and sills. Nests.
