Review: Make-believe mayhem in 'Clay Pigeons'
Web posted on: Monday, October 05, 1998 2:29:12 PM From Reviewer Paul Tatara (CNN) I've got a lot of respect for three of the actors who appear in "Clay Pigeons," although a couple of them test that respect big-time before the movie's over. Vince Vaughn, Joaquin Phoenix, and (especially) Janeane Garofalo always give solid performances, even in less-than-solid movies. That Vaughn and Phoenix stink things up this time isn't the biggest problem with "Clay Pigeons," though. The movie, written by Matt Healey and directed by first-timer David Dobkin, mostly suffers because it's one of those post-Coen Brothers crime thingys that goes to extremes to make sure that everyone knows the filmmakers are too painfully cool to really mean anything they're showing you. Controlling Nuisance: Pigeons
University of Missouri Extension
Missouri Department of Conservation
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Common pigeons are introduced birds, thought to have ties with the rock dove, or pigeon, of Europe, Asia and Africa. Over much of the United States, especially in urban areas, they are a nuisance. From a biological, pathological, or aesthetic standpoint, pigeons may be objectionable. They harbor diseases communicable to man, and their nesting and roosting areas are dirty. Many broods are brought off during the year, with birds nesting from late winter throughout the summer to early winter. They have a long life span.
Control
Roosts
Measures to eliminate roosting sites seem costly, but the long-term effectiveness justifies the expense. Openings in lofts and towers, behind signs and under eaves can be screened with rust-proof wire of 3/4-inch mesh that also will keep out sparrows and starlings. Roosting on ledges can be discouraged by wire net covering, or by wood or metal sheathing installed at a sharp angle. Sharp wire projectors and electric wire devices are available commercially to protect ledges and sills.

The contents of this site is to help fanciers have a better understanding of the pigeon breed of Parlor Rollers as presented by Terry Duez of Irwin, Pennsylvania. Hopefully, the explanations will be from a novice point of view and easy for everyone to understand. All facets of breeding, feeding and medications, loft management, conditioning, preparing for competition rolling and breeder selection will be discussed in detail..
All opinions and view points are exclusively derived from over 50 years of raising pigeons and are solely those of Terry Duez (who is the Publicity Director of the American Parlor Roller Association and an APRA Master Breeder) and not necessarily the view points of the APRA.

February 28, 2002 Scientists have determined, through DNA analysis, that the long-extinct dodo belongs in the dove and pigeon family.
The dodo, poster bird for species extinction, has a pitiful reputation as a stupendously overweight idiot of a bird that couldn't even fly. But scientific evidence is slowly correcting that impression. Its new rep: an evolutionary success, perfectly adapted to its living conditions, thin and relatively fast, but still an early victim to the spread of man.
Dutch sailors began using the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius as a stopover in 1598; Within 80 years, the dodo was gone. Having evolved over millions of years to take maximum advantage of its splendid isolation, its size and inability to flee from predators ushered it into extinction in an evolutionary instant. Molecular analysis of DNA retrieved from a dodo specimen at the Oxford University Museum of Natural History, England, confirms that the bird belongs firmly in the middle of the pigeon tree in evolutionary terms, reports a study published in the March 1 issue of the journal

Avian Goiter (Thyroid Hyperplasia or Dysplasia)
Gary D. Butcher, D.V.M., Ph.D, and Curtis C. Beck Thyroid hyperplasia is an enlargement of the thyroid glands due to abnormal proliferation of the epithelial cells lining the follicles. The glands are located in the neck region. Thyroid hyperplasia has been observed in many species of birds, including pigeons, canaries, budgerigars, and wild birds. It is the most common disease of the thyroid gland in the budgerigar. Several conditions associated with damage to the thyroid gland result in goiter. The most common is a dietary iodine deficiency. Substances called goitrogenic agents, which interfere with the normal production of thyroxine by the thyroid glands, may also result in the disease. Feeds containing goitrogenic agents include soybean, flax, rapeseed, kale, cabbage, broccoli, and turnips. Septicemic diseases with an acute onset may affect the thyroid glands causing inflammation and hyperplasia. Exposure to toxic levels of organosphosphates or chlorinated biphenols may also result in enlargement and hyperplasia of the glands. An inadequate level of iodine in the diet leads to a lack of available iodine in the thyroid glands. Iodine is needed for the production of thyroxine. When low levels of thyroxine are in the bloodstream, the brain sends signals to the thyroid glands causing a proliferation of follicular epithelial cells. These cells are responsible for thyroxine production. Hyperplasia of the thyroid gland is a response to the body's need to produce more thyroxine. With sustained iodine deficiency, the signals continue to stimulate epithelial cell proliferation and produce thyroid enlargement.

Rock Doves (also known as feral pigeons) are tame birds that are natives of Eurasia. These social birds now live all over the world, thriving in cities. Peregrine falcons and hawks prey upon them. These birds make a cooing sound. They have a life span of up to 15 years. Anatomy : The Rock Dove is from 12 to 14 inches (30 to 35 cm) long. Its coloration is extremely variable. Diet : Pigeons eat mostly seeds. Pigeons drink by sucking up water (very few other birds do this). Nest and Eggs : Male pigeons build shallow, saucer-like nests made of sticks and twigs. Nests are usually located on ledges, like seaside cliffs or window sills on skyscrapers. Females lay 1-2 white eggs in each clutch (a set of eggs laid at one time). Both parents incubate the eggs.

A personal site offering information on raising and racing, and pictures of some of her birds.
http://www.frognet.net/~marks444/
WELCOME I began this web page primarily for the beginning flier...There are LOTS of great sites on the web (my favorites are on my links page), but I wanted to do something just a little different. As a beginner, you find that the more you learn the more you need to know. I was lucky enough to find a great group of people who helped me with my endless questions. Most of which I still bother regularly!! So to that end, I tried to create a web site with some useful information and a LOT of good links. In the following pages you will find out a little about me and hopefully a lot about pigeons. I will be updating this site, adding information and links, as the racing seasons change and to address any comments or questions anyone has. On a personal note.. I'd like to say thanks to; Matt, Frank, Cajun, Larry, Tony, Blue Grizz, Wil, ID, Will, Darkcheck, Wayne..and all the others who have helped me. I'd especially like to thank Dan, without his help this page would never have gotten out of my head and onto the web! So sit back, relax and I hope you enjoy yourself...

Photospot: blue pigeons by Roger Safford, from Bulletin of the African Bird Club volume 5.2, September 1998 The tropical islands of the south-west Indian Ocean are rich in endemic genera, but most of these are restricted to Madagascar. Many of the birds that have reached the remoter archipelagoes - the Comoros, Seychelles and Mascarenes - are from widespread groups like the white-eyes, Zosterops, and paradise-flycatchers, Terpsiphone. Only two regional endemic genera are known to have reached every archipelago: the fodies, Foudia, and the blue pigeons, Alectroenas. By virtue of their distinctiveness and restricted range, these could be considered the most characteristic birds of the region. Whilst the fodies have attracted much conservation and research effort, the blue pigeons have not. Seychelles Blue Pigeon
(R. Lucking) These are very beautiful birds. The blue is, in all cases, a rich and rather unusual hue, and the long, pointed neck feathers are as impressive in silvery-white on the Comoro and Seychelles species as in silvery-blue on Madagascar. Red caruncles on the face are another characteristic feature. It is tantalising to see the three museum skins of the extinct Mauritius Blue Pigeon, which seemed to combine the best features of the three survivors: a head and neck like the Comoro bird, and a red tail, as on Madagascar.

The Parade of Legs
This problem is adapted from Van De Walle, John (1994), Elementary School Mathematics nd Ed.), NY: Longman, pages 40 - 41
Mary looked out of her farmhouse window and saw a group of pigeons and donkeys passing by. She counted all the legs of the pigeons and donkeys and found that the total number of legs add up to 66. How many of each kind of animals (pigeons and donkeys) passed by her window if the total number of animals is 24? Number of Donkeys: Number of Pigeons: How to Use:
  • Try working on a solution yourself before jumping to the solution strategies.
Print this page and use a correction pen to "white-out" the links that name the different solution strategies.
Have your child work out a solution. Then ask if he could solve the problem in another way. After he had done it, ask him to solve it again but in another way. If he is stuck, prompt him as to what should be the next step. At the end of the whole exercise, show him (and explain, if necessary) the different strategies in solving the problem ... use the links below.

Ukrainian Pigeons Skycutters My Pigeons Ukrainian Skycutters. This medium size bird came from Nikolaev , Ukraine over one hundred years ago. They are different from other pigeons because when they fly they don’t flap their wings like regular birds but fly with their wings in a circular motion. They can stay in one spot about a kilometer in the air for hours at a time. For a Ukrainian skycutter to perform like it should it has to be a pure bred, well taken care of, receiving good nutrition and daily training. Let them get comfortable with their surroundings, before you start training them. To train them just let them out daily, you will need to toss them in the beginning. You will have to make a coupe for them, protect from the elements and other animals. There are several different colors, black, red, yellow, spotted red and white, spotted black and white, blue bars, gray and other colors.
