(CNN) British junk food lovers are having an unhealthy effect on the country's pigeons, which are becoming obese by feasting on litter leftovers. The charity Keep Britain Tidy says people who do not throw their uneaten junk food away are causing the problem. Chief executive Alan Woods said the birds were now "supersized" and dependent on people rather than nature for their food. The abundance of food on offer was also causing a population explosion of pigeons in Britain, which are considered a health hazard and a nuisance, he said. "Seven out of the 10 bits of litter we find on our pavements and roads are food related. And with all this trash to choose from, the pigeon, rat, fox and gull population has spiraled," Woods said. The litter problem was worse during summer because the warm weather meant more people ate outdoors.

Interspersed with mixed woodland and crops of peas, beans, linseed, and oil seed rape these provide the perfect holding and feeding area for woodpigeons and offer some of the best woodpigeon shooting in the country.
We now find ourselves needing to expand our membership to supply the woodpigeon shooting service the farmers have come to expect.
The mainstay of our winter shooting is oilseed rape, approx 2500 acres this time which is going to be impossible to cover with our present level of membership.
There are also large amounts of spring rape, peas and beans to move onto when the rape has finished.

Secret of homing pigeons revealed
When they have flown a journey more than once, carrier pigeons establish a habitual route, scientists said. Story Tools YOUR E-MAIL ALERTS Homing pigeons Research or Create your own Manage alerts What is this? LONDON, England (Reuters) The secret of carrier pigeons' uncanny ability to find their way home has been discovered by British scientists: The feathered navigators follow the roads just like we do. Researchers at Oxford University spent 10 years studying homing pigeons using Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites and were stunned to find the birds often don't navigate by taking bearing from the sun. Instead they fly along motorways, turn at junctions and even go around roundabouts, adding miles to their journeys, British newspapers reported. "It really has knocked our research team sideways," Professor Tim Guilford said in the Daily Telegraph. "It is striking to see the pigeons fly straight down the A34 Oxford bypass, and then sharply curve off at the traffic lights before curving off again at the roundabout," he said.

A Greek Pigeon Keeper
Hello pigeon keepers. My name is Stathis Polimeris, I was born in and I keep a real estate agency in the town of Veria (which is in Greece and 75km west of Thessaloniki). I' ve been going in for with pigeons (Greek Pigeons) since I was a child. I like all kinds of pigeons when they are pureblood and they can adjust themselves to the tastes and to the demands of the pigeon keeper. In Veria at 1990 I had the idea to organize a pigeon competition in Veria. I found other pigeon keepers who agreed to it and since then, every year from the end of January until the beginning of February we organize this competition which people, who take up "flying" pigeons as a hobby, from all over Greece come to watch. These nuisance birds were introduced to the United States as pets but quickly adapted to our environment and have continued to flourish in numbers, becoming a pest of business, airports, historical landmarks, schools, stadiums any place where adequate food and shelter is available. Pigeons primarily feed on grains with some occasional fruit in their diet. This basic diet has changed as the birds learned to live in our neighborhoods and cities. It is not uncommon to see flocks of pigeons walking through the parking lots of shopping centers and fast-food restaurants, looking for handouts or scraps of food dropped by humans. Pigeons are birds that live in communal flocks. These flocks generally feed, loaf and roost together, enjoying the company of their companions. These birds usually mate for life. Pigeons have a life span of up to 10 or 15 years in the wild but in urban areas they may only live for about 5 years. Most pigeon problems occur where the birds are loafing or feeding. It is in these areas that you generally need to use nuisance bird control products.

UK's RAF planned WMD delivery via 'pigeons of death'
By John Lettice Published Friday 21st May 2004 16:46 GMT British secret service files released today reveal the existence immediately after the second world war of a stealth weapons system capable of the precision delivery of death, destruction and anthrax to an unsuspecting enemy. Unfortunately, the WMD programme was cancelled when the Joint Intelligence Committee decided it couldn't afford any more millet. It seems sadly clear that the JIC was losing it 50 years before it got anywhere near Iraq dossiers because yes, in 1950 here it was arguing the toss about who was going to foot the bill for a loft full of 100 pigeons, under the heading "Pigeon Policy". This potential deadly WMD scheme had been hatched (an oddly appropriate word) immediately after the war by one Wing Commander WEL Rayner, head of the air ministry's pigeon section, whose command was being rendered obsolete by new stuff like radio and the telephone. But Rayner was made of sterner stuff, and lobbied for the redeployment of his troops as silent (well, unobtrusive, anyway), remote-controlled agents of death.

Probably Once The Most Numerous Bird on Earth
It Is Now Extinct The following photographs are of a specimen kindly made available by the Biology Department at Ball State University.
    General Information
The Passenger Pigeon, once probably the most numerous bird on the planet, made its home in the billion or so acres of primary forest that once covered North America east of the Rocky Mountains. Their flocks, a mile wide and up to 300 miles long, were so dense that they darkened the sky for hours and days as the flock passed overhead. Population estimates from the 19th century ranged from 1 billion to close to 4 billion individuals. Total populations may have reached 5 billion individuals and comprised up to 40% of the total number of birds in North America (Schorger 1995). This may be the only species for which the exact time of extinction is known. The Passenger Pigeon was similar to but larger than the Mourning Dove. It had a slate blue head and rump, slate gray back, and a wine red breast. The colors of the male were brighter than those of the female.

    PIGEONS
Pigeons are abundant in cities and around rural areas of Colorado. They conflict with humans for several reasons. Their droppings can deface buildings, kill vegetation, and are aesthetically displeasing when deposited on benches, sidewalks, and cars. Around grain elevators, pigeons consume and contaminate grain destined for human consumption. Pigeons carry pigeon ornithosis (psittacosis) encephalitis, newcastle disease, toxoplasmosis, salmonella food poisoning and other diseases. Histoplasmosis, a fungal disease that can infect people, can be contracted when cleaning up accumulations of dusty pigeon manure. Pigeon ectoparasites such as mites, fleas, ticks, and bugs may readily bite people. Pigeons are also considered a hazard around airports. Problems with pigeons can be reduced or avoided with several methods. Pigeons can be excluded from buildings by placing 1/2 to 1 inch hardware cloth or plastic netting over eaves, vents, windows, doors and other openings. The angle of roosting ledges should be altered to 45 o or more with sheet metal or wood. Porcupine wires (Nixalite or Cat Claw) can be placed on ledges and ridges of buildings to prevent roosting. Two or more strands of steel wire can be stretched above and in front of ledges to deter landings. Various sticky substances such as Roost-No-More and Bird Tanglefoot can be placed on ledges to temporarily discourage pigeons.

    Solving Problems with Pigeons
From a pigeon's point of view, city living can't be beat. Food and water are readily available. Predators are few and far between. Plus, there's plenty of free housing: Window ledges, rooftops, bridges, and warehouses offer space for whole flocks to rest and take shelter in close proximity. At first glance, it appears to be an ideal arrangement. We provide room and board; in return, the birds add a little warmth and color to our cold concrete canyons. So what's the problem? In a word: droppings. Not only is pigeon poop unsightly, it can damage buildings, monuments, and automobiles. If allowed to accumulate, human health problems may arise. Luckily, a little patience and understanding go a long way toward resolving conflicts between people and pigeons. Removing the birds in question may seem like an obvious answer. The truth is, the results are short-lived simply because it creates a vacancy that other animals quickly fill. Humane conflict prevention and resolution is less expensive and more effective over the long-term. Exclusion Deter pigeons from roosting on railing and pipes by installing a single strand wire barrier 1½ to 2 inches above the center of the surface so that birds will be off balance when they attempt to perch. Other devices that work include wire coils, spikes (usually described as "porcupine wire") and electrified wires. Pigeons can be discouraged from roosting on flat surfaces such as ledges and light fixtures by using boards or sheet metal to create a 45° or greater slope.
