Where are all the baby pigeons?
22-Mar-1985 Dear Cecil: Judging from the number of pigeons inhabiting the city these days, one must assume that either they have very long life spans or they have enormously large numbers of offspring. Yet, although we see our share of baby robins, baby ducks, baby bunnies, and other infant animals, one seldom sees a baby pigeon. Do they emerge full grown from their eggs? Are the squabs simply well hidden, or are they guarded by the parent birds until they are grown, thus assuring a high survival rate? In short, where are all the baby pigeons? Birdwatching Commuter, Evanston, Illinois Cecil replies: I'm mystified by the enduring fascination baby pigeons seem to hold for the Teeming Millionsover the years I've gotten dozen of letters inquiring about their whereabouts. My answer is always the same: the elusive little devils are out there somewhere; you just don't see them because the nests are well hidden and because Ma and Pa Pigeon generally stay with the kiddies for their first few weeks of life. This never seems to satisfy anybody, though, because the letters keep dribbling in. At last, however, I am able report an actual sighting of a bonafide baby pigeon. Read on. Dear Cecil: I found two baby pigeons! They are huge, and look just like their mother. The reason you've never seen any is that they stay in the nest until they are old enough to drink, drive, vote, etc. The nest is right outside my office window on a ledge at Arizona State University's Memorial Union. Little does the mother know I could just open the window and snatch the little creatures! Do you want them? Laura M., Tempe, Arizona

Why You Never See Baby Pigeons
By Hannah Holmes Maybe the old ones never die. My Portland flock could be the self-same bunch of birds that filched clams from the Abenaki Indians and pooped upon approaching Viking boats. In addition to adapting flawlessly to the total nature-fake of a human habitat, maybe pigeons have also adapted perfectly to life: It doesn't make them die. But because that's improbable, and because I was terribly curious about what kind of guy intentionally associates with pigeons, I called John Heppner, president of the National Pigeon Association. "Absolutely," he said in a sobering tone of voice when I asked if there is such a thing as a baby pigeon. "I've been raising 'em for fifty years." What he went on to tell me gave me a new respect for the grubby, shining, strutting, victorious pigeon.
First of all, unlike dippy little English sparrows or robins, pigeons hide their nests.
Heppner said that back when they emerged in Asia (evidently, they were nature-living animals, once), pigeons were cliff-dwellers. So now they balance their messy nests of sticks inside the guts of bridges, or atop tall buildings, or on top of your air conditioner. Secondly, pigeons are parents

Email Address: unless otherwise noted. Racing Pigeons Racing pigeons—more accurately described as racing doves —are, in fact, one of man's oldest feathered companions. Pigeons date to antiquity! Far from being a lowly servant, the racing pigeon was the special prerogative of kings, princes, and nobles of all kinds. During these past times it was contrary to law for a common man to own pigeons. The great empires of Carthage, Egypt, and Rome made full use of them in many ways including the production of squabs (a great delicacy) as well as high-grade nitrogen (droppings) for their fields. The aforementioned civilizations also used pigeons in a great network of advanced communication. They kept emperors in touch with the most remote areas of their lands during a time when horse and riders or caravans would have taken weeks to deliver the same information. Caesar made formidable use of them during his conquest of Gaul. It is now extremely difficult to imagine that our feathered companions were at one time the ultimate communication tool used in the greatest of all communication networks! It is further difficult to comprehend that these little warriors of the airways made possible both great empires as well as great fortunes. As already mentioned the Egyptians and Persians trained rock doves to carry messages. They were an exceptionally reliable method of communication hitherto unheard of. As these empires spread across the then known civilized world capturing country after country they discovered that these other countries had also trained rock doves. These countries included China, Greece, Italy as well as India. Among these many countries China had in fact organized a postal system based upon the use of messenger pigeons. Knowledge is power, and at one time the surest and swiftest way to deliver this knowledge was with racing pigeons.

Live City Cams Joaquin Phoenix ...in 'Clay Pigeons' By Jack Garner
Democrat and Chronicle (Oct. 9, 1998) First impressions are hard to shake but with diverse film roles in Return to Paradise and the new Clay Pigeons , the 23-year-old actor Joaquin Phoenix can feel himself breaking free. Most people first knew Joaquin as the younger brother of River Phoenix, and as part of an eccentric family of latter-day hippies, supposedly growing up in religious communes and traveling in the back of vans in South America, Florida and California. Later, of course, he made the tragic 911 call after River collapsed from a drug overdose in 1993, in front of the Viper Room on L.A.'s Sunset Strip. And then, on screen, Joaquin made his first really big impression as a VERY spooky kid who's seduced into committing murder for Nicole Kidman in "To Die For." So your reactions to the younger Phoenix are either sadness, for what he's experienced in life, or fear, because of his ability to portray scary, weird guys on screen. But Joaquin will be the first to tell you there's more to him than those early impressions.

Discrimination abilities of pigeons
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
In a famous article in , Watanabe, Sakamoto and Wakita described an experiment which showed that pigeons can be trained to discriminate between paintings by Picasso and Monet The birds were first trained on a limited set of paintings: when the shown painting was a Picasso, the pigeon was able to obtain food by repeated pecking; when it was a Monet, pecking had no effect. After a while, the pigeons would only peck when shown Picasso paintings. They were then able to generalize, and correctly discriminate between paintings of the two painters not previously shown, and even between cubist and impressionist paintings (cubism and impressionism being the two stylistic schools Picasso and Monet belong to). When the Monet paintings were shown upside down, the pigeons were not able to properly categorize anymore; showing the cubist works upside down did not have such an effect. In 1995, the authors won the humorous Ig Nobel Prize in psychology for this work. In a later paper, Watanabe showed that if pigeons and human college students undergo the same training, their performance in distinguishing between

Homing Pigeons are very interesting birds. They are different from pigeons you would
frequent at parks because they are able to find their way home when released from distances hundreds of miles from home. Scientists think Homing Pigeons have Magnetite within
their brain that "draws" or "pulls" them home. If you were to place a Homing Pigeon next to
