Longevity of U.S. Presidents
Ed Uthman, MD
Diplomate, American Board of Pathology
Last updated 2 Sep 2000 Everyone knows that the average life span of humans has increased markedly in the 20th century, but has it increased for everyone? An informal study of U.S. presidents may yield some surprising answers. My aim is to look at the effect of medical advances over the last two centuries on the longevity of those who are most likely to have access to those advances. I think presidents make an interesting (if small) sample because of their demographic uniformity: all are white male politicians, almost all are military veterans, and presumably all had sufficient wealth and/or prestige to command whatever medical resources were available in their later years. Of the 41 men who have held the office, 5 are still alive (Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton), 4 were victims of homicide, all from gunfire (Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley, Kennedy)*, and 32 died of natural causes (4 while in office: Harrison, Taylor, Harding, FD Roosevelt). These 32 are listed below by date of death. The "ordinal" figure is the order in which each served as president, Cleveland having served two non-consecutive terms. NAME ORD-
INAL YEAR
DIED AGE CAUSE OF DEATH*** Washington, George

85. FRANKLIN PIERCE - LoveToKnow Article On FRANKLIN PIERCE
pierce, franklin (18041869), fourteenth president of the United States, was bornat HilIsborough, New Hampshire, on the 23rd of November 1804.
http://96.1911encyclopedia.org/P/PI/PIERCE_FRANKLIN.htm
FRANKLIN PIERCE
PIERCE, FRANKLIN Pierce was the youngest man who had as yet been elevated to the presidency. For his cabinet he chose William L. Marc) When the Democratic national convention met at Cincinnati in June 1856, Pierce was an avowed candidate for renomination, but as his attitude on the slavery question., and especially his subserviency to the South in supporting the pro-slavery party in the Territory of Kansas, had lost him the support of the Northern wing of his party, the nomination went to James Buchanan. After retiring from the presidency Pierce returned to Concord, and soon afterwards went abroad for a three years tour in Europe. Many Southern leaders desired his renomination by the Democratic party in 1860, but he received such suggestions with disfavour. After his return to America he remained in retirement at Concord until the day of his death, the 8th of October 1869. Pierce was not a great statesman, and his fame has been overshadowed by that of Benton, Calhoun, Clay and Webster. But he was an able lawyer, an orator of no mean reputation, and a brave soldier. He was a man of fine appearance and courtly manners, and he possessed personal magnetism and the ability to make friends, two qualities that contributed in great measure to his success. A portion of Pierces correspondence has been published in thi American Historical Review, x. 110127, 350370. D. W. Bartlettr Franklin Pierce (Auburn, New York, 1852), and Nathaniel Hawthornes Franklin Pierce (Boston, 1852), are two campaign biographies, and are very eulogistic. J. R. Irelans History of th~ Life, Administration and Times of Franklin Pierce (Chicago, 1888) being vol. xiv. of his Republic, is a more critical work, but maccu rate as to details. .1. E. Cooleys Review of the Administration o~ General Pierce (New York, 1854) and Anna E. Carrolls Review o~ Pierces Administration (Boston, 1856) are hostile anti-administra tion tracts. The best accounts of Pierces administration are t be found in James Schoulers History of the United States, vol. v. (ne~ ed., New York, 1894); J. F. Rhodess History of the United States vols. i. and ii. (New York, 1893-1894); and J. W. Burgesss Middi, Period (New York, 1900).

U.S. Presidents and First Ladies
Tired of names like Madison, Taylor, and Tyler? Why not use McKinley or Pierce?
In recent years, surnames have become popular to use as first names. Classrooms are full of little Taylors, Tylers, and Madisons. Relative newcomers like Carter, Kennedy, Reagan, Grant and Harrison are zooming up the charts. What do these names have in common? They are all the names of former U.S. Presidents. Why these names? Perhaps parents feel they are distinguished and have more prestige than your average Smith and Jones. Perhaps it's a nod to our nation's history. Perhaps it's just because WASPy names are in vogue right now. Whatever the reason, here is a list of the Presidents of the U.S.A. and their First Ladies. The lists are organized chronologically as well as alphabetically. President First Lady George Washington Martha Dandridge John Adams Abigail Smith Thomas Jefferson Martha Wayles Skelton James Madison Dolly Payne Todd James Monroe Elizabeth "Eliza" Kortright John Quincy Adams Louisa Catherine Johnson Andrew Jackson Rachel Donelson Robards Martin VanBuren Hannah Hoes William Henry Harrison Anna Tuthill Symmes John Tyler Julia Gardiner James Knox Polk Sarah Childress Zachary Taylor Margaret mackall Smith Millard Fillmore Abigail Powers Franklin Pierce Jane Means Appleton James Buchanan Abraham Lincoln Mary Todd Andrew Johnson Eliza McCardle Ulysses Simpson Grant Julia Boggs Dent Rutherford Birchard Hayes Lucy Ware Webb James Abram Garfield Lucretia Rudolph Chester Alan Arthur Ellen Lewis Herndon Grover Cleveland
