Franklin Pierce: Defining Democracy in America From a Frontier Town to the White House:
Exhibition Offered New Insight into President Franklin Pierce

Of his close friend Franklin Pierce (1804-1869), author Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote: "He comes before the people of the United States at a remarkable era in the history of this country and of the world." Pierce's presidency was the culmination of an unexpected rise to power from a small town on the New Hampshire frontier, to leader of a young Republic. How Pierce arrived at the office of president, and what that said about the nation he led, was the focus of an exhibition entitled Franklin Pierce: Defining Democracy in America . Never before had Pierce artifacts, paintings, letters, and personal accounts been brought together on such a large scale. The exhibition was on view from June 3, 2004, through May 8, 2005, at the Society's 30 Park Street library. Defining Democracy in America showcased more than 100 objects, paintings, photographs and documents drawn primarily from the Society's museum and library collections. The exhibition helped mark the Bicentennial year of Pierce's birth, and placed his life in the context of American culture, past and present. His life and career, like that of many famous Americans, are understood through a mixture of scholarly interpretation and popular myth. The overall goal of the exhibition was to use the Society's extensive collection of Pierce-related materials to move the man out of the realm of myth and legend, and to explore how he influenced and was influenced by ideas and events of his time.

John Q. Adams is the only Member to have been elected to the House of Representatives after having served as President of the United States. His father, John Adams, was the 2nd President of the United States. John Quincy Adams represented the citizens of Plymouth, Massachusetts from March 4, 1831 until his death, earning the nickname Old Man Eloquent for his great speaking ability. He worked to abolish slavery and opposed the House's "Gag Rule," which banned all debate on slavery from 1836 until 1844. On February 21, 1848, Adams suffered a stroke while sitting at his desk in the Old House Chamber. He was taken to the Speaker's office to recover but died there 2 days later.

Franklin Pierce Bicentennial
Franklin Pierce Bicentennial . Dedicated to the 1804 birth date of President Pierce, the 14th US President, this site features a biography, and a link to his New Hampshire home.
From the site:
This site commemorates the bicentennial of the birth of Franklin Pierce (1804-1869), the 14th President of the United States of America. It is the result of historical and cultural institutions throughout New Hampshire working together to coordinate exhibits, lectures, and other activities to mark the birth of the Granite State’s only U.S. President.
While Franklin Pierce’s memory is far from forgotten, his life is often overlooked or misunderstood. Pierce was a compelling and often contradictory man. He has been described a powerful orator, a faithful friend and a master politician. He is also described as a defender of slavery, a partisan politician, and an ineffective president.

Initially a Jacksonian, he served in the US Senate and did not favor abolitionism. Enlisting in the Mexican War, he later won the presidency as a "dark horse" candidate as the Civil War approached. Franklin passed the Fugitive Slave Act and pushed states rights Westward. Wracked by the death of his three children, Franklin's administration sparked little support and he was not renominated. PIERCE, FRANKLIN
Pierce's devotion to the Democratic party, his success in the middle reaches of American politics, and his brief service in the Mexican War were all useful credentials at the faction-ridden, stalemated Democratic National Convention in 1852. Nominated for president, he was elected after a campaign based on traditional Democratic policies, coupled with a strong commitment to maintaining peace between the recently quarreling North and South. But Pierce was almost immediately faced by a renewal of the sectional crisis, this time over the right of southerners to bring their slaves into Kansas. His handling of the conflicting forces and of the extreme tensions provoked in Congress and throughout the country by Stephen A. Douglas's Kansas-Nebraska bill, which opened the area to slavery, was inept, and led to a period of disastrous political turmoil. Despite his failures, Pierce sought nomination for a second term in 1856. His administration had had several foreign policy successes, and he had kept the partisan faith against attempts to increase the national government's involvement in economic affairs. The Democratic leaders, however, preferred someone unconnected with the recent disruptions as the only way to regain the electoral initiative. Defeated at the national convention, Pierce returned to New Hampshire in 1857, emerging briefly at the outset of the Civil War as part of an effort by elder statesmen to find one more compromise to prevent the Union's breakup.

Mr. Pierce did all he could to make Kansas a slave state, by recognizing the laws passed by the "Bogus legislature" and using the United States troops to enforce those laws. By doing so he rendered himself unpopular with the free-state advocates, but Appleton's Cyclopedia of American Biography says: "Some years after Pierce's death, the legislature of New Hampshire, in behalf of the state, placed his portrait beside the speaker's desk in the hall of the house of representatives at Concord. Time has softened the harsh judgment that his political foes passed upon him in the heat of party strife and civil war. . . . His integrity was above suspicion. . . . No political or personal influence could induce him to shield those whom he believed to have defrauded the government." President Pierce died at Concord, N. H., Oct. 8, 1869.
