FRANKLIN PIERCE U.S. President Franklin Pierce was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1832, and later moved to the U.S. Senate in 1837. Not so fond of Washington politics, he resigned from the Senate in 1842 and returned to New Hampshire to practice law. He turned down political offers to serve in the Mexican War, and was eventually made a Brigadier General. In 1852 he attended the Democratic national convention and, much to his surprise, won the nomination and the election. He tried unsuccessfully to promote conciliation between the North and the South and served only one term, losing in 1856 to James Buchanan

Franklin Pierce
US President - 1853-57 Courtesy of the Library of Congress Franklin Pierce became President at a time of apparent tranquility. The United States, by virtue of the Compromise of 1850, seemed to have weathered its sectional storm. By pursuing the recommendations of southern advisers, Piercea New Englanderhoped to prevent still another outbreak of that storm. But his policies, far from preserving calm, hastened the disruption of the Union. Born in Hillsborough, New Hampshire, in 1804, Pierce attended Bowdoin College. After graduation he studied law, then entered politics. At 24 he was elected to the New Hampshire legislature; two years later he became its Speaker. During the 1830's he went to Washington, first as a Representative, then as a Senator. Pierce, after serving in the Mexican War, was proposed by New Hampshire friends for the Presidential nomination in 1852. At the Democratic Convention, the delegates agreed easily enough upon a platform pledging undeviating support of the Compromise of 1850 and hostility to any efforts to agitate the slavery question. But they balloted 48 times and eliminated all the well-known candidates before nominating Pierce, a true "dark horse."

Franklin Pierce, 14th U. S. President Franklin Pierce was born in Hillsborough, New Hampshire in 1804. Like most lawmakers, he studied law and entered into politics. After doing service with the state legislature, he moved on to Washington where he was in the House of Representatives and late the U. S. Senate. He served in the Mexican War, and afterwards was proposed for the Presidential nomination. At the Democratic Convention in 1852, they balloted 48 times and in the process, all of the well-known candidates were eliminated, leaving Pierce as a the dark horse nominee. His opponent in the election was General Winfield Scott, but Scott was unable to carry the South and Pierce won with the popular vote, although it was by a narrow margin. When time for re-election came, the Democrats refused to renominate him, so he was not to have a second term, so he returned to New Hampshire. President Franklin Pierce
American History Study Guide Franklin Pierce During the 1850s, the United States grew more bitterly divided over the issue of slavery. A compromise on the issue passed by Congress, the Compromise of 1850 was supposed to offer a balanced approach that could be acceptable to proslavery and abolitionist (antislavery) groups. But one provision of the Compromise may well have been the final cause for abolitionists to unite: the Fugitive Slave Law. This law allowed Southern slavemasters to pursue escaped slaves into the North, often resulting in violent confrontations. When Franklin Pierce began his duties as president of the United States in March of 1853, he felt firmly that the Compromise of 1850 had settled all the differences between North and South. He was wrong. As the nation grew more divisive (divided) and frustrated over the institution of slavery, government became less effective. By the end of Pierce's term, conflicts over slavery had cost the United States an opportunity to acquire Cuba and had sparked bloody fighting in Kansas.

His father, Benjamin Pierce (1757-1839), served in the American army throughout the War of Independence, was a Democratic member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives from 1789 to 1803, and was governor of the state in 1827-29. The son graduated in 1824 at Bowdoin College, at Brunswick, Maine, where he formed a friendship with Nathaniel Hawthorne . In 1833 he entered the national House of Representatives, and although he achieved no distinction in debate he was a hard worker, and a loyal supporter of the policies of President
