The island Britain is 800 miles long, and 200 miles broad. And there are in the island five nations; English, Welsh (or British), Scottish, Pictish, and Latin. The first inhabitants were the Britons, who came from Armenia, and first peopled Britain southward. Then happened it, that the Picts came south from Scythia, with long ships, not many; and, landing first in the northern part of Ireland, they told the Scots that they must dwell there. But they would not give them leave; for the Scots told them that they could not all dwell there together; "But," said the Scots, "we can nevertheless give you advice. We know another island here to the east. There you may dwell, if you will; and whosoever withstandeth you, we will assist you, that you may gain it." Then went the Picts and entered this land northward. Southward the Britons possessed it, as we before said. And the Picts obtained wives of the Scots, on condition that they chose their kings always on the female side;

In March 1999, a meeting was held to gauge interest in the establishment of an Anglican school in the Port Macquarie area. An Interim School Council was formed and a Feasibility Report prepared and presented to Bishop Philip Huggins in November 1999. Following extensive research in 2000 a suitable site was selected. Contracts were signed and the DA presented to Hastings Council in April 2001. Approval was gained on June 18 and earthworks commenced in August. Construction of Stage 1 buildings was unfortunately delayed and the school opened in St Thomas’ Church Hall and meeting rooms on 29th January 2002 with 76 students and 7 full time staff.

Preface BOOK I CHAPTER XIV IN the meantime, the aforesaid famine distressing the Britons more and more, and leaving to posterity lasting memorials of its mischievous effects, obliged many of them to submit themselves to the depredators; though others still held out, confiding in the Divine assistance, when none was to be had from men. These continually made excursions from the mountains, caves, and woods, and, at length, began to inflict severe losses on their enemies, who had been for so many years plundering the country. The Irish robbers thereupon returned home, in order to come again soon after. The Picts, both then and afterwards, remained quiet in the farthest part of the island, save that sometimes they would do some mischief, and carry off booty from the Britons. This battle, fought between the Picts and Angles of Northumbria on May 20, 685, marked the first engagement in a long series of conflicts between the peoples of Scotland and their neighbors to the south. And while the actual conduct of the battle remains unknown , the results were felt for the next fifteen centuries in England. Email to a Friend

Search European History High Drama: Scotland's Dunnottar Castle Tempestuous weather or mild, Dunnottar Castle has a long history of dramaof the unstaged sort. By Judy P. Sopronyi for Historic Traveler Magazine The ruins of Dunnottar Castle perch on a huge, high mound of a cliff, almost cut off from the mainland of Scotland. With winds whipping off the North Sea and waves crashing on the rocky beach below, Dunnottar lays claim to the prize for most dramatic Scottish castle setting. Film director Franco Zeffirelli apparently agreed. He chose Dunnottar Castle to play Elsinore in his 1990 version of Shakespeare's Hamlet . In the title role, Mel Gibson played the "Alas, poor Yorick" scene near that same rocky beach. (Zeffirelli had less dramatic weatherno crashing waves were evident while Mel conversed with a skull.)

Warning Macbeth is supposed to upset people. It shows life at its most brutal and cynical, in order to ask life's toughest question. This page deals with all this without apology. I have a high regard for truth and I talk plain. If you want something nice, please leave now If you are a student assigned to read or see Macbeth , or an adult approaching it for the first time, you are in for a lot of fun. Everybody brings a different set of experiences to a book, a theater, or a classroom. Although I've tried to help, ultimately you'll need to decide for yourself about Shakespeare and Macbeth. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do! Translate this page automatically This Is NOT "Family Entertainment." Young people who know of Shakespeare from "Shakespeare Gardens" and "Beautiful Tales for Children" may be surprised by what happens in Macbeth
  • When we first hear of Macbeth, he has just cut an enemy open ("unseamed") from belly button ("nave") to throat ("chops"). The king shouts "Oh valiant cousin! Worthy gentleman!" At their party, a witch shows her friends the chopped-off thumb of a ship's pilot wrecked on his way home.

No Filthy PICTs For Hashers
By Martin Minow, Arlington, MA Note: Source code files accompanying article are located on MacTech CD-ROM or source code disks.
Introduction
The Application
I used code from Tech Note 154 to write the PICT reader. It works by substituting a private procedure for the function QuickDraw uses to access the contents of a PICT resource. My function just reads the information from the input file. This worked fine, except for one tiny problem: the t-shirt was digitized at 300 dpi but the picture frame assumed a 72 dpi (screen resolution) universe. When my program read the data, it threw away a lot of information. After reading the picture, the user can set the threshold and start the cleanup process. When it completes, the application writes the picture into a PICT file. You can then use a drawing program to touch-up the picture. CleanPICT took care of the small fluff so you can use your judgement to remove larger clumps.
