The Pictish Kings
As one would expect, the information available as to the history of the kings of Pictland or Alba is as full of mystery, legends, hearsay as the origins of the people themselves. The fact is that most of what is known about the kings of this ancient race comes from lists and chronicles generally written by other peoples, some of whom were enemies of the Picts. The only historical writing which may have been a Pictish version of events is the document known as " The Pictish Chronicle ". As the only possibly Pictish-written historical record, it is a sad reminder of the incredible lack of Pictish records, for the Chronicle is nothing more than a list of kings. Thus, historians try to use other documents of the time to attempt to reconstruct and verify some claims from the Chronicle. There are Irish documents and legends, the writings of Bede in 731 A.D. and other missionaries tales, Roman reports, Greek maps, etc.

A Child's History of England
I will tell you, shortly, what is most interesting in the early Saxon times, as they are described in these songs and stories of the Bards. EGBERT, not considering himself safe in England, in consequence of his having claimed the crown of Wessex (for he thought his rival might take him prisoner and put him to death), sought refuge at the court of CHARLEMAGNE, King of France. On the death of BEORTRIC, so unhappily poisoned by mistake, EGBERT came back to Britain; succeeded to the throne of Wessex; conquered some of the other monarchs of the seven kingdoms; added their territories to his own; and, for the first time, called the country over which he ruled, ENGLAND. Almost 1,400 years ago, on the 20th of May of the year 685, a naked man, his muscular body and face covered in blue elaborate tattoos, urged his small Highland pony forward and studied the scene visible on the valley below him. He was close enough not only to count silently the tents and fires of the huge army assembled below, but he could also hear the guttural sounds of the Teutonic language spoken by the hated Anglian invader who had occupied the southern part of his ancestral land for almost 30 years. The mounted naked warrior looked behind him and examined his own smaller army, made up of both men and women tattooed in designs and symbols like the ones on his scarred body. His name was Bridei and he was the King of the Northern Picts, the most ancient of all Britannic races, who predated the Celtic immigrants from Ireland and the Teutonic invader from Angle land. On that Easter day he could hear the Latin chants of the Christian priests who accompanied the Anglian king, and he knew that his own Pictish army was not only outnumbered five to one, but also that so far the Angles had been invincible against the once Roman Britons in the south. He raised his hand and for an instant, the future of the land called Albion by the Picts, Caledonia by the Romans and known as Scotland today, hung in the air. He brought his hand down, unsheathed his sword and charged down the hill.

A Child's History of England
by Charles Dickens Table of Contents Chapter II - Ancient England Under the Early Saxons The Romans had scarcely gone away from Britain, when the Britons began to wish they had never left it. For, the Romans being gone, and the Britons being much reduced in numbers by their long wars, the Picts and Scots came pouring in, over the broken and unguarded wall of Severus , in swarms. They plundered the richest towns, and killed the people; and came back so often for more booty and more slaughter, that the unfortunate Britons lived a life of terror. As if the Picts and Scots were not bad enough on land, the Saxons attacked the islanders by sea; and, as if something more were still wanting to make them miserable, they quarrelled bitterly among themselves as to what prayers they ought to say, and how they ought to say them. The priests, being very angry with one another on these questions, cursed one another in the heartiest manner; and (uncommonly like the old Druids) cursed all the people whom they could not persuade. So, altogether, the Britons were very badly off, you may believe. They were in such distress, in short, that they sent a letter to Rome entreating help - which they called the Groans of the Britons; and in which they said, 'The barbarians chase us into the sea, the sea throws us back upon the barbarians, and we have only the hard choice left us of perishing by the sword, or perishing by the waves.' But, the Romans could not help them, even if they were so inclined; for they had enough to do to defend themselves against their own enemies, who were then very fierce and strong. At last, the Britons, unable to bear their hard condition any longer, resolved to make peace with the Saxons, and to invite the Saxons to come into their country, and help them to keep out the Picts and Scots.

Summary
This book is an attempt to revive the study of history, as it used to be, before it became corrupted by the assumption that early humans were descended from ape-like creatures over a long period of time. Before the time of Darwin and Huxley, most history books started off with a brief statement about creation and the flood, and how the three sons of Noah went to different parts of the world, Shem to Asia, Ham to Africa and Japheth to Europe. Then they would continue the history from that point onwards. A considerable amount of information was available, from non-Biblical sources, and much of it is still available today, although it sometimes requires the retrieval of obscure material from second-hand bookshops and library archives. My source material has included the Babylonian history, from the fragments that remain of the works of Berosus, and the Greek mythology which is a highly embellished version of early history. After that, I have focused on the history of Britain and Ireland, because this is the part of the world where I live, and it is always easier to research one's own locality. There has recently been a revival of creationism, as new evidence is continually emerging that contradicts the theory of evolution. I will not go into all this here, but many resources are available, and some of them are referenced from my

For there is no historian of all those who have written on Ireland from that epoch that has not continuously sought to cast reproach and blame both on the old foreign settlers and on the native Irish. Pictish Nation
Welcome to the world's first web site dedicated to the Picts! On the web since 1994! In here I want to make some things available to potential Pictophiles and all others who come to visit. First of all, I want to create the world's first page dedicated to that ancient race (known as the Picts) whom once inhabited present day Scotland. I will try to link all Pictish pages on the web here. If you know of one I've missed, please email me with its URL and I will add it. Furthermore, for really serious Pictophiles, I recommend joining the Pictish Arts Society , which is truly the world's finest organization dedicated to preserving and expanding interest in Pictish culture. As such I enthusiastically recommend you join them! To read some books about the Picts visit the link at the bottom of the page. Finally, those of you who saw the TBS Special on June 28, 1998 "Tattoos: Women of the Ink", Let's get those letters flowing to the National Geographic and maybe they'll take a look at them too! If you liked the TBS piece, write to them and tell them you'd like them to do a program on the Picts! Their address is: Turner Original Productions, One CNN Center, Box 105366, Atlanta, GA 30348. I will also try to create links to artists who work in a Pictish genre and also WHERE you can find them. Since I believe that we about to see an explosion of interest in the art and history of these ancient people, I look forward to the page and its links changing all the time. Visit often!

Mac Alpin's Treason: The End of the Picts
The Gael warrior king whose bloody sword enthroned a Scottish line of kings which eventually created modern Scotland is perhaps one of the most mysterious figures of ancient history. His is a life surrounded by treacherous myths, dark stories and unproved allegations of shameful deeds and sinful accomplishments. That the first true Scottish king of the various peoples of Scotland is smeared with the stain of treason and backstabbing is as much a product from lack of knowledge as it is from the terrible bits and pieces from a story of treason which has survived for over a thousand years. There is very little fact upon which to base a story; indeed there is a lot of falsified or embellished documents from later Scottish Churchmen and Church historians, eager to create a Church approved version of how the Gael line of kings (and its Church) came to conquer Alba, completely erase Pictish culture and destroy the Pictish Church. That the Scots' aim was to free Dalriada from Pictish domination and establish Scottish rule over the Picts is clearly evident by the actions of Kenneth MacAlpin's father, known as Alpin, who in 834 AD, as the Picts faced the new Viking threat in the north, rebelled against his Pictish King of Scots and Picts. This ruler of both Pictland and Dalriada was Oengus II, and according to the

Celts, Basques and Picts While the Roman and German influence essentially defined Medieval culture, there were other ethnic groups around who had some impact, and left some reminders of their presence. The chief among these also-rans were the Celts, Basques ,and Picts. The latter two groups belonged to the original human inhabitants of Europe, people who, several millenia B.C. had established themselves and their cultures throughout Europe. These included the Ligurians (in what is now Germany and France), Iberians (in Spain), Picts (in Britain), the Sikels (in Sicily), and the proto-Latins (in Italy). Up in Scandinavia were the Germans. In what is now eastern Europe were Slavs and Celts. The Germans who later stayed behind became the Vikings and the modern Scandinavians. In the Balkans were more Ligurian peoples. In Greece you had Greeks. Further east you had Etruscans (who later migrated to Italy), Semites, Persians and Dravidians until you ran into the people who looked Chinese The ethnic composition of Europe was quite different during the Medieval period, and even more so during the 1st and 2nd Centuries BC, when the Romans were putting their empire together. In the beginning, there were the Ligurians, Iberians and related peoples in Europe. These peoples developed from the neolithic (cavemen) types that settled in Europe after the last ice age ended some 10,000 years ago. The Celts gradually

The first reference by Eumenius in 297 AD, in a description of travels by Constantius in and to the north coast of Scotland, described 'a nation, still savage and accustomed only to the hitherto semi-naked Picts and Hibernians as their enemies, yielded to Roman arms and standards without difficulty.' This is in reference to the original conflicts between the Picts and Agricola.

The Picts and Scots - c.297 - 843
The Picts are first mentioned by the Roman writer Eumenius in 297 when he described the northern people of the British Isles as Picti . The name Picti means 'painted ones' and may have been a nickname given to the people of Scotland by the Roman garrisons. Of course this does not mean that the Picts came into existence at that date, it just happens to be the first time they are mentioned in recorded history. In fact, the Picts were the direct descendents of the indigenous Bronze and Iron Age peoples of a large part of the area that became Scotland. It is likely that separate tribal groupings mentioned by Roman writers, such as the Maeatae and Caledonii , came together to form Pictland. Although much has been discovered concerning the Picts in recent decades there is much that is still unknown. They left little in the way of written records, except for a few late king-lists in Latin. The Picts are most famous for their carved stones which employed a variety of symbols, the meaning of which is still obscure. Many of these symbols are used throughout this website. Very little is known regarding Pictish settlement although more evidence is coming to light through excavations every year. Souterrains are a form of underground chamber which were used from before the time of the historical Picts but there is evidence that the sites continued to be used into the historical period.
