Home History of the Department of Physics Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University Updated 2005 Physics has been taught at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University since it opened its doors in 1872. It was first taught in the scientific department by James H. Lane, professor of natural philosophy, who was also professor of military tactics. By 1902 physics was taught in the Science Hall (located on the Upper Quad) along with chemistry, geology, and biology. Although the Science Hall burned in 1905, it was immediately rebuilt. In 1927 the science departments of chemistry, geology, and physics vacated the building and moved to the newly completed Davidson Hall. In the early years physics was taught in many different multidisciplinary departments. From 1904 to 1908 the department was called the Physics Department, and then in 1921, after an interval of thirteen years, it was again renamed the Physics Department, a name it has continued to bear to the present day. The first undergraduate physics curriculum was established in 1917 as the Applied Physics curriculum. It was discontinued in 1921. In 1937 the Industrial Physics curriculum was begun. The descriptive adjective was used in the name in order not to offend the sister institution, which lies east of the Blue Ridge. In 1953 this connotation was dropped, and the department's undergraduate curriculum has been called physics ever since.

A short history of Theoretical Physics at Hoza 69...
Czeslaw Bialobrzewski (1878-1953) was the first head of Theory at Hoza. He came in 1921 from Jagiellonian University (Cracow). For a long time he was the only theoretician, so he also indulged in experimental work, and, accumulating wisdom, he tackled philosophy... In 1938 he organized the prestigious conference New Theories in Physics . During World War II he continued scientific work with his group under the pretext of carrying out measurements for water works etc. (at that time the occupying Germans, considering the Poles to be an inferior race (Untermenschen), had forbidden any scientific activity). The books he has written in this period have unfortunately been destroyed during the Warsaw Uprising (1944).
Myron Mathisson (1897-1940) was the most famous theoretical physicist at Hoza. His works on general relativity are cited even today. At the time he could not get tenure at any Polish university (he was a Jew, you see...). He gave courses on mathematical physics at Hoza as Privatdozent . He spent one year in the Soviet Union in Kazan and in 1939 moved to London, where he died.

The Kazoo - Its appearance, history and importance for modern music.
The text of a speech by Michael Fink of Denmark. Appearance:
A kazoo is a tube-formed, American musical instrument, with both ends of
    the tube uncovered.
One end of the tube is flattened, while the other end of the tube has a
    small circular opening.
Around two thirds down the instrument there is another circular hole.
This hole leads to a small chamber, where a wax-membrane is situated.
The membrane, which is fixed around the edges by a circular
    cylinder-ring, is free to oscillate.
A kazoo may be made out of plastic or metal and can have all sorts of different shapes. How to play the kazoo: The whole idea behind the instrument is, that a kazoo player by singing or speaking through the instrument induces an air current which makes the membrane vibrate and thus creates a summing, "nasal" sound. By wholly or partially covering up the membrane hole a great diversity of sounds are created. The membrane is the key point of the kazoo. This membrane gives the kazoo its distinction from the "horn-section-instruments". The kazoo

    History of the
First Step to Nobel Prize in Physics Introduction
About 15 years ago the Institute of Physics, Polish Academy of Sciences, in co-operation with the Polish Children's Fund started to organise the so-called Research Workshop on Physics . During the Workshop pupils selected by the Fund partook in various "adult" research projects being carried out at the Institute. Some results obtained by the Workshop participants were extremely valuable and were later published [e.g.: K. Giaro, et al. A Correct Description of the Interaction between a Magnetic Moment and Its Image , Physica C, M. Braun, et al. Vibration Frequency and Height of a Magnet Levitating over a Type-II Superconductor , Physica C, National Competition Since the first competition was a success we decided to repeat the national competition every year. The second competition was organised in 1992/3. Its level was also very high, perhaps even higher than the previous year. The number of participants and winners increased also: 81 papers, 8 winners, 21 honourable mentions in two categories.
Table 1 presents a statistics of the first six national competitions.

The Department of Philosophy at Boston University now offers, within its Masters Degree program, a concentration in the philosophy of science. This curriculum is designed for those who are seeking to understand the conceptual foundations of the natural sciences (physics, chemistry, biology, earth sciences), cognitive sciences, mathematics, medicine, psychology, economics, and other social sciences. While philosophy of science usually focuses on contemporary science, in this program students are also afforded the opportunity to study the history of science, as well as issues at the interface of science and religion. We are seeking students from diverse academic backgrounds and various career aspirations. These include scientists, physicians, nurses, and engineers who are interested in exploring the foundations of their discipline; science students who wish to broaden their technical education; communication students who wish to make science journalism their career, as well as practicing journalists who wish to deepen their knowledge of science; and general humanities students, including those already committed to philosophy, who wish to obtain a deeper understanding of this field.
