Magazine plays its part in physics history Gordon Fraser , who has stepped down as editor of CERN Courier looks at how the physics scene has changed during his time working on the magazine.
New editor
A news magazine is about developments. As scientific developments have unfolded over time, the many issues of this magazine have helped to reveal the history of particle physics.
The rate of particle physics discoveries, which was tumultuous during most of the 20th century, has slowed down. In the final years of the 20th century our knowledge and understanding reached a plateau in the Standard Model (few physicists share Murray Gell-Mann's passion for coining imaginative words where they matter).
From this plateau, the view has widened. High energy means high temperature, so that particle physics and astrophysics, and even cosmology, find themselves more and more on common ground, tracking the immediate aftermath of the Big Bang in a still-hot universe. Not that long ago it would have been inconceivable for particle physicists to be interested in what happens in the sky. Now the latest news on microwave background radiation, supernovae, black holes and gamma-ray bursters is followed enthusiastically at major particle physics meetings. Astrowatch is one of the most popular features of this magazine.

Compiled by Sara Tompson , Fermilab Library Administrator Fermilab is a basic research high-energy physics laboratory operated by Universities Research Association, Inc. under contract to the U.S. Department of Energy . Fermilab researchers utilize the Tevatron particle accelerator (currently the world’s most powerful accelerator) to better understand subatomic particles as they exist now and as they existed near the birth of the universe. A collection review of the Fermilab Library monographs was conducted during the summers of 1998 and 1999. While some items were identified for deselection, the review proved most fruitful in highlighting some of the strengths of the Fermilab monograph collection. One of these strengths is history of physics, including biographies and astrophysics. A bibliography of the physics history books in the collection as of Summer, 1999 follows, arranged by author. Note that the call numbers are Library of Congress classification. To check on the current status of any of these books, go to our

#7H. Plasma Physics History
When blood is cleared of its various corpuscles there remains a clear liquid, named "plasma" by the great Czech medical scientist, Johannes Purkinje (1787-1869). The use of the term "plasma" for an ionized gas started in 1927 with Irving Langmuir (1881-1957), an American whose achievements ranged from the chemistry of surfaces to cloud seeding for promoting rain, and who in 1932 won the Nobel prize for chemistry. Langmuir worked for the General Electric Co., studying electronic devices based on ionized gases, and the way the electrified fluid carried high velocity electrons, ions and impurities reminded him of the way blood plasma carried red and white corpuscles and germs. As a result of those studies, carried out on relatively cool and dense plasmas, scientists nowadays can talk of "Langmuir waves" and fly "Langmuir probes" aboard satellites. Gradually plasma research spread in other directions , of which three were particularly significant. First , the development of radio led to the discovery of the ionosphere , the natural "plasma roof" above the atmosphere, which bounces back radio waves and sometimes absorbs them. Starting with the study of the propagation of radio waves in the ionosphere, a wide variety of plasma waves was identified, in general spreading differently along magnetic field lines than perpendicular to them.

Divisions
The Divisions act as forums for reviewing research and development in their respective field of physics. Each Division comprises several Subject Groups coming within its area of interest and in collaboration with those Groups organises an annual or biennial conference. Through the Divisional Affairs Committee the Divisions are invited by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) to comment on the its Business Plans for Physics and Materials. There are currently five Divisions: Groups
The Subject Groups are concerned with the specialist subject areas of physics, the Professional Groups with the application of physics in research, development and manufacture across a wide range of disciplines. In addition to arranging meetings and conferences, the majority of Groups produce regular newsletters keeping their members in touch with the latest developments in their field and providing information on relevant meetings organised by other bodies. Some Subject Groups make bursaries available to help students attend conferences. Several of the Groups are organised jointly with other societies with similar interests.

home :. about the institute :. short history e-mail: info@phy.bg.ac.yu url: http://www.phy.bg.ac.yu print Short History The Institute of Physics in Belgrade was co-founded in 1961 by the University of Belgrade and the Government of Serbia. The IP was created with the following principle objectives in mind:
  • To provide facilities for the conducting of original research to its faculty, associates and visitors. To help in fostering the growth of advanced studies in and related to physics. To provide a forum for scientific contacts between physical scientists from Serbia and their colleagues around the world. To form the nucleus of the advanced graduate program in physics, and to work with the Department of Physics of the University of Belgrade in creating a top level physics graduate curriculum. To develop applied areas of physics and assist in the development of related technologies.
From a handful of young scientists occupying a couple of offices near the Department of Physics, the Institute has grown and evolved. In 1961 the above goals seemed very far away - now they are a reality. Today the Institute of Physics represents one of the premier research institutions in the region. The IP has a permanent faculty of more than 100 research scientists organized into five centers. At a given time more than 30 graduate students are walking at the IP towards their Ph.D. 's. The Institute is also host to two small high-tech companies whose products represent a serendipitous result of the research activities in various fields of fundamental and applied physics conducted at the IP.
