Helping Your Children Learn Science
This on-line book provides examples of a few simple activities we can do with our children. It is an introduction to the wealth of material in many other books available in libraries and bookstores. It might also inspire us to make up our own experiments to see why and how things turn out the way they do.

About Temperature
This document was prepared for the middle school math teachers who are taking part in Project Skymath . I do a a few questions about the science but these are personal quibbles. To be commented on later.
Bad Science
Bad Science abounds and comes in many guises. This page sets out to attack only one brand: well understood phenomena which are persistently presented incorrectly by teachers and writers, presumably because they either do not know any better or because they don't really care enough to get it correct.
The Internet Museum of Holography
Holography is the process of creating three dimensional images using lasers. This site has a visitors center, reference library, reading room, on-line intro to holography lesson, educators/students can submit questions, places to see holograms in the U.S. and Canada, information on doing holograms as a hobby, diagrams of lasers, dictionary of terms, and a gallery exhibit.

Earthquake Web Quest A good internet-based research lesson with a focus on Tennessee. This could also be adapted to another region. Surfing for Earthquakes and Volcanoes (grades 6-8) Students use the Internet to research data on earthquakes and volcanoes and plot locations to determine continental plate boundaries. Extensions include interpretation of interaction between plate boundaries, causes of earthquakes and volcanoes, and the comparison of the formation of Olympus Moons on Mars and the Hawaiian volcanic chain.

Foucault Pendulum Lesson Plans for General Science
The previous discussion of the Foucault Pendulum was intended for use as a supplement to AP physics. This edition is intended for general science students whose technical skills are not as extensively developed as AP physics students. The plans were developed by Maureen Dooley, B.S.Ed. They are presented here with permission of the author. The eleven plan sequence is intended to develop first the idea that there is a question: Does the earth move or is the earth fixed? Evidence is developed and tested with earth-fixed and earth-spinning models. A discussion of the overall picture is provided here. The Foucault pendulum is observed throughout the sequence. In lesson 4, the class begins keeping a log which leads to the observation that the plane of oscillation of the pendulum is rotating clockwise. In the final "jury trial," the motion of the Foucault pendulum is conclusive in favor of a spinning earth as the simplest model that works. The plans, as well as two worksheets and a vocabulary are listed below.

    FLUBBER
    Borate solution

    2/3 cup warm water
    1 1/2 teaspoon powdered Borax
    3 drops food coloring
Mix together in a 1 cup measuring cup using a wooden spoon
    Glue Solution

    3/4 cup warm water
1 cup white school glue Mix together in a mixing bowl using a wooden spoon Pour the borate solution into the bowl with glue solution. Use your hands to gently lift and turn the mixture until only one tablespoon of liquid is left. Flubber will be sticky for a moment or two. After the excess liquid has dripped off, Flubber is ready. Store in a plastic bag in the refrigerator. When you are through, discard in a waste can. DO NOT try to wash it down the sink. If it dries on carpet or clothing, cover it with a cloth soaked in vinegar to de-gel it, then wash the area with detergent and water. GLARCH Measure 1/2 cup liquid white school glue into bowl. I get the best results with Elmer's School Glue. Measure 1/4 cup Sta Flo liquid starch into the same bowl. Mix together with a wooden spoon. After the substance becomes too thick to use the spoon, continue mixing with your hands. This works quicker with warm hands. Glarch may be stored in a plastic bag. Wash all supplies.
