Research Degrees - PhD, MPhil, MRes
The Department of Physics offers three postgraduate courses :
  • A doctorate degree (PhD), which is a three-year research degree. A masters degree by research (MPhil), which essentially is equivalent to the first year of a PhD study but completed with a thesis. A Research Masters degree (MRes).
PhD / MPhil
The entry requirement for the PhD/MPhil degrees is the equivalent of a First or Upper Second Class BSc Honours or MSci degree or an MSc degree in a relevant discipline. The majority of a PhD / MPhil student's work takes place in an individual research group with training provided through continual contact with the supervisors, senior postgraduate students and research staff. A wider view of the chosen field is obtained through directed literature surveys and through meetings and seminars organised by the individual groups. The Department is keenly aware of the value of course work and of monitoring procedures in securing the progress and completion of postgraduate training and in increasing its value. This area is given continued high priority and is a complement to the research activities described elsewhere. Our ambition here is to ensure that all MPhil students complete in a year and that PhD students progressing beyond first year are able to submit their thesis at, or close to, the end of their studentship. Overseas students, and home/EU students funded from other sources are fully integrated into this scheme, with similar progress requirements and objectives.

The Solution Archive is a free communtiy supported site for the preservation and organization of resources helpful to science and mathematics graduate students. Here, you may find FULL SOLUTIONS to physics problems found in texts such as Goldstein, Serway, Griffiths, Wangsness, Greenwood and Kittel. You do not need to login to browse or download files from the Archive. Software, code, HOWTOs and links particularly helpful to upper-level science and math types are also Archived here. Help build the Solution Archive! Link this page and spread the word. What the Solution Archive is NOT This is not a homework help site! Nor is it a "send me stuff" service. Don't email questions that need answering. Don't ask for help with a problem. In short, do your own damned homework. Take back the Internet! "Education and plagiarism are mutually exclusive; Education and sharing are not. One should give credit where it is due because that is what integrity and honor dictate be done. The Internet is the library of which, so long ago, Euclid, Plato and scores of other scholars had dreamed... ...Now that may we glimpse their enduring Alexandria, we must behold how a few short-sighted, greedy fools have so perverted such a beautiful and simple concept."

    Practical Physics Lessons
    Useful Applications of Physics Knowledge
Most adults HATE the concept of Physics. If they could, they avoided it in High School and College. If they HAD to take it, Physics seems to represent a traumatic experience in their lives. This is the case primarily because no one (and no textbook) showed them the incredible usefulness a moderate knowledge of Physics can be. This series of lessons is meant to correct that situation. Students in High School or College Physics should be able to benefit from and EVEN ENJOY (!!) these Physics lessons. The lessons should help clarify the usages of a lot of those dry subjects and equations the teacher or professor tries to ram down your throat. These lessons are freely made available to teachers and professors for use as they desire, either on the InterNet or in the classroom. (The preceding paragraphs appears in each lesson, in the event that someone happens to find a single lesson from this series as a result of a search-engine search.)
