The Carl F. Gauss Minerva Center for Scientific Computation
Achi Brandt, Director
The Gauss Center was officially inaugurated in the fall of 1993, thanks to a generous endowment from the Ministry for Science and Technology (BMFT) of the Federal Republic of Germany, through the joint committee for German-Israeli cooperation (Minerva). Its objective is to act as a catalyst for the development of new fundamental computational approaches in physics, chemistry, applied mathematics and engineering, introducing, in particular, advanced multi-scale (multi-resolution) and parallel-processing methods. The Gauss Center interacts with many fields of application, contributing to the transfer of algorithmic ideas back and forth among widely varying types of problems. It offers workshops, short courses, temporary supervision and graduate studies for full-time students, guest students, and visiting scientists. The Gauss Minerva Center's technical report series is available for downloading. So is also a detailed survey paper of all the current projects, briefly listed below.

Physics Programs
The Department of Physics currently offers several programs in physics at the University of Alberta. The programs to choose from ar e:
  • Honours in Physics Specialization in Physics Honours in Mathematical Physics Honours in Geophysics ... Specialization in Environmental Physical Sciences
  • The differentiation between " Honours " programs and " Specialization " programs comes from: different requirements in the averages necessary for a student to be admitted and continue in each program; the course load required during the normal academic session; and often the courses required for each program especially in third and fourth years.
    Honours and Specialization in Physics
The first three years include the following topics: Year 1 introductory physics, introductory calculus, linear algebra, arts options, science options Year 2 modern physics, electromagnetism, classical mechanics, thermodynamics, computational physics, intermediate calculus, linear algebra, lab courses, an arts option

    The auroral oval
    The auroral zone
    Where Do Aurora Occur?
In the 1950's scientists used all-sky cameras (cameras which visually capture the entire night sky) around the world to define where aurora consistently appear. They called this elliptical region the auroral oval . The oval is generally located between 65 and 75 degrees latitude in both the northern and southern hemisphere (there are two ovals, but the northern one, aurora borealis, is most commonly cited). The night-side of the oval is much more expansive than the day side; that is to say, the oval is not static on the earth's surface: At noon in Fairbanks, Alaska, the city is under the thin half of the oval. At 9pm, the city is under the thick section. During active periods, the aurora expands on the night side, sometimes quadrupling its original width, allowing those who normally couldn't see the aurora to gain a glimpse.
The auroral zone is a statistically defined area of the globe. It is a circular donut in shape and its location on Earth does not shift, unlike the auroral oval. At the peak of the auroral zone , it is statistically determined that an observer will see more aurora year-round than at any other latitude. The peak line runs just north of Fairbanks straight through the heart of Canada, and over the southern tip of Hudson Bay.
