The next offering of the Advanced Standing Exams is as follows:
Monday, August 29, 2005 8.01, 9AM - Noon, 4-370 The Physics Advanced Standing Exams (ASE) are three-hour, closed book exams covering Classical Mechanics (8.01) or Classical Electromagnetism (8.02) at a level of calculus-based introductory physics texts for science and engineering students such as: University Physics by Young and Freedman; Physics by Halliday, Resnick, and Krane; Physics for Scientists and Engineers by Serway; Physics for Scientists and Engineers by Fishbane, Gasiorowicz, and Thornton. The exams are similar to the final exams given in 8.01 and 8.02, with problems based on a selection of the topics listed below. Neither calculators nor "formula sheets" may be used. The only students eligible to take the 8.01 and 8.02 advanced standing exams are:

The Department of Physics offers Advanced Standing Examinations for incoming students once per year just prior to the beginning of instruction each fall semester. Each examination tests knowledge of the subject matter in one Cornell Physics course or pair of courses (course content is described below). Eligible students passing an examination will receive course credits equal in number to that usually given for completion of the Cornell course covered. The exams are open to students who have previous physics instruction at the college level, but who have not qualified automatically for Cornell course credit through transfer credit, a CEEB Advanced Placement (AP) test, the International Baccalaureate Examination, or the General Certificate of Education (GCE) A Level Examination. These Advanced Standing Examinations are taken primarily by students in one of two categories: (1) Students with college-level physics preparation completed outside the United States, for whom it is uncertain whether course credit should be awarded at Cornell.

PHYSICS ADVANCED CONCEPTUAL WORKSHOP
Students taking the Physics 130 or 135 sequences have the opportunity to participate in the Physics Advanced Conceptual Workshop. This workshop has been developed in conjunction with the physics sequences, and is part of the Gateway Science Workshop (GSW) program of the Searle Center for Teaching Excellence. This optional, innovative program consists of advanced workshops wherein small diverse groups of students meet weekly to tackle challenging, conceptually-based problems related to the course material. The workshop groups are led by undergraduate peer facilitators who have successfully completed the sequence. Together, students in each workshop group work cooperatively on important and fascinating problems, and engage in discussions with each other in a productive yet informal learning environment.
